A variational theory of convolution-type functionals

We provide a general treatment of perturbations of a class of functionals modeled on convolution energies with integrable kernel which approximate the $p$-th norm of the gradient as the kernel is scaled by letting a small parameter $\varepsilon$ tend to $0$. We first provide the necessary functional-analytic tools to show coerciveness in $L^p$. The main result is a compactness and integral-representation theorem which shows that limits of convolution-type energies is a standard local integral functional with $p$-growth defined on a Sobolev space. This result is applied to obtain periodic homogenization results, to study applications to functionals defined on point-clouds, to stochastic homogenization and to the study of limits of the related gradient flows.

Homogenization of ferromagnetic energies on Poisson random sets in the plane

We prove that by scaling nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic energies defined on Poisson random sets in the plane we obtain an isotropic perimeter energy with a surface tension characterised by an asymptotic formula. The result relies on proving that cells with `very long' or `very short' edges of the corresponding Voronoi tessellation can be neglected. In this way we may apply Geometry Measure Theory tools to define a compact convergence, and a characterisation of metric properties of clusters of Voronoi cells using limit theorems for subadditive processes.

Perturbed minimizing movements of families of functionals

We consider the well-known minimizing-movement approach to the definition of a solution of gradient-flow type equations by means of an implicit Euler scheme depending on an energy and a dissipation term. We perturb the energy by considering a ($Γ$-converging) sequence and the dissipation by varying multiplicative terms. The scheme depends on two small parameters $\varepsilon$ and $τ$, governing energy and time scales, respectively. We characterize the extreme cases when $\varepsilon/τ$ and $τ/\varepsilon$ converges to $0$ sufficiently fast, and exhibit a sufficient condition that guarantees that the limit is indeed independent of $\varepsilon$ and $τ$. We give examples showing that this in general is not the case, and apply this approach to study some discrete approximations, the homogenization of wiggly energies and geometric crystalline flows obtained as limits of ferromagnetic energies.

Discrete-to-continuum limits of multi-body systems with bulk and surface long-range interactions

We study the atomistic-to-continuum limit of a class of energy functionals for crystalline materials via Gamma-convergence. We consider energy densities that may depend on interactions between all points of the lattice and we give conditions that ensure compactness and integral-representation of the continuum limit on the space of special functions of bounded variation. This abstract result is complemented by a homogenization theorem, where we provide sufficient conditions on the energy densities under which bulk- and surface contributions decouple in the limit. The results are applied to long-range and multi-body interactions in the setting of weak-membrane energies.

Compactness by coarse-graining in long-range lattice systems

We consider energies on a periodic set ${\mathcal L}$ of ${\mathbb R}^d$ of the form $\sum_{i,j\in{\mathcal L}} a^\varepsilon_{ij}|u_i-u_j|$, defined on spin functions $u_i\in\{0,1\}$, and we suppose that the typical range of the interactions is $R_\varepsilon$ with $R_\varepsilon\to +\infty$, i.e., if $\|i-j\|\le R_\varepsilon$ then $a^\varepsilon_{ij}\ge c>0$. In a discrete-to-continuum analysis, we prove that the overall behaviour as $\varepsilon\to 0$ of such functionals is that of an interfacial energy. The proof is performed using a coarse-graining procedure which associates to scaled functions defined on $\varepsilon{\mathcal L}$ with equibounded energy a family of sets with equibounded perimeter. This agrees with the case of equibounded $R_\varepsilon$ and can be seen as an extension of coerciveness result for short-range interactions, but is different from that of other long-range interaction energies, whose limit exits the class of surface energies. A computation of the limit energy is performed in the case ${\mathcal L}={\mathbb Z}^d$.

Homogenization of random convolution energies in heterogeneous and perforated domains

We prove a homogenization theorem for a class of quadratic convolution energies with random coefficients. Under suitably stated hypotheses of ergodicity and stationarity we prove that the $Γ$-limit of such energy is almost surely a deterministic quadratic Dirichlet-type integral functional, whose integrand can be characterized through an asymptotic formula. The proof of this characterization relies on results on the asymptotic behaviour of subadditive processes. The proof of the limit theorem uses a blow-up technique common for local energies, that can be extended to this `asymptotically-local' case. As a particular application we derive a homogenization theorem on random perforated domains.

Homogenization of cohesive fracture in masonry structures

We derive a homogenized mechanical model of a masonry-type structure constituted by a periodic assemblage of blocks with interposed mortar joints. The energy functionals in the model under investigation consist in (i) a linear elastic contribution within the blocks, (ii) a Barenblatt's cohesive contribution at contact surfaces between blocks and (iii) a suitable unilateral condition on the strain across contact surfaces, and are governed by a small parameter representing the typical ratio between the length of the blocks and the dimension of the structure. Using the terminology of Gamma-convergence and within the functional setting supplied by the functions of bounded deformation, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of such energy functionals when the parameter tends to zero, and derive a simple homogenization formula for the limit energy. Furthermore, we highlight the main mathematical and mechanical properties of the homogenized energy, including its non-standard growth conditions under tension or compression. The key point in the limit process is the definition of macroscopic tensile and compressive stresses, which are determined by the unilateral conditions on contact surfaces and the geometry of the blocks.

Quantitative analysis of finite-difference approximations of free-discontinuity problems

Motivated by applications to image reconstruction, in this paper we analyse a \emph{finite-difference discretisation} of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. Denoted by $\varepsilon$ the elliptic-approximation parameter and by $δ$ the discretisation step-size, we fully describe the relative impact of $\varepsilon$ and $δ$ in terms of $Γ$-limits for the corresponding discrete functionals, in the three possible scaling regimes. We show, in particular, that when $\varepsilon$ and $δ$ are of the same order, the underlying lattice structure affects the $Γ$-limit which turns out to be an anisotropic free-discontinuity functional.

$Γ$-limit of the cut functional on dense graph sequences

A sequence of graphs with diverging number of nodes is a dense graph sequence if the number of edges grows approximately as for complete graphs. To each such sequence a function, called graphon, can be associated, which contains information about the asymptotic behavior of the sequence. Here we show that the problem of subdividing a large graph in communities with a minimal amount of cuts can be approached in terms of graphons and the $Γ$-limit of the cut functional, and discuss the resulting variational principles on some examples. Since the limit cut functional is naturally defined on Young measures, in many instances the partition problem can be expressed in terms of the probability that a node belongs to one of the communities. Our approach can be used to obtain insights into the bisection problem for large graphs, which is known to be NP-complete.

Crystalline evolutions with rapidly oscillating forcing terms

We consider the evolution by crystalline curvature of a planar set in a stratified medium, modeled by a periodic forcing term. We characterize the limit evolution law as the period of the oscillations tends to zero. Even if the model is very simple, the limit evolution problem is quite rich, and we discuss some properties such as uniqueness, comparison principle and pinning/depinning phenomena.

An integral-representation result for continuum limits of discrete energies with multi-body interactions

We prove a compactness and integral-representation theorem for sequences of families of lattice energies describing atomistic interactions defined on lattices with vanishing lattice spacing. The densities of these energies may depend on interactions between all points of the corresponding lattice contained in a reference set. We give conditions that ensure that the limit is an integral defined on a Sobolev space. A homogenization theorem is also proved. The result is applied to multibody interactions corresponding to discrete Jacobian determinants and to linearizations of Lennard-Jones energies with mixtures of convex and concave quadratic pair-potentials.

Asymptotic behaviour of ground states for mixtures of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in a dilute regime

We consider randomly distributed mixtures of bonds of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic type in a two-dimensional square lattice with probability $1-p$ and $p$, respectively, according to an i.i.d. random variable. We study minimizers of the corresponding nearest-neighbour spin energy on large domains in ${\mathbb Z}^2$. We prove that there exists $p_0$ such that for $p\le p_0$ such minimizers are characterized by a majority phase; i.e., they take identically the value $1$ or $-1$ except for small disconnected sets. A deterministic analogue is also proved.

Continuum limit and stochastic homogenization of discrete ferromagnetic thin films

We study the discrete-to-continuum limit of ferromagnetic spin systems when the lattice spacing tends to zero. We assume that the atoms are part of a (maybe) non-periodic lattice close to a flat set in a lower dimensional space, typically a plate in three dimensions. Scaling the particle positions by a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ we perform a $Γ$-convergence analysis of properly rescaled interfacial-type energies. We show that, up to subsequences, the energies converge to a surface integral defined on partitions of the flat space. In the second part of the paper we address the issue of stochastic homogenization in the case of random stationary lattices. A finer dependence of the homogenized energy on the average thickness of the random lattice is analyzed for an example of magnetic thin system obtained by a random deposition mechanism.

Optimal design of mixtures of ferromagnetic interactions

We provide a general framework for the optimal design of surface energies on networks. We prove sharp bounds for the homogenization of discrete systems describing mixtures of ferromagnetic interactions by constructing optimal microgeometries, and we prove a localization principle which allows to reduce to the periodic setting in the general nonperiodic case.

Minimising movements for oscillating energies: the critical regime

Minimising movements are investigated for an energy which is the superposition of a convex functional and fast small oscillations. Thus a minimising movement scheme involves a temporal parameter $τ$ and a spatial parameter $ε$, with $τ$ describing the time step and the frequency of the oscillations being proportional to $\frac 1 ε$. The extreme cases of fast time scales $τ<< ε$ and slow time scales $ε<< τ$ have been investigated in Braides, Springer Lecture Notes 2094 (2014). In this article, the intermediate (critical) case of finite ratio $ε/τ>0$ is studied. It is shown that a pinning threshold exists, with initial data below the threshold being a fixed point of the dynamics. A characterisation of the pinning threshold is given. For initial data above the pinning threshold, the equation and velocity describing the homogenised motion are determined.
