Semi-analytical calculation of the singular and hypersingular integrals for discrete Helmholtz operators in 2D BEM

Approximate solutions to elliptic partial differential equations with known kernel can be obtained via the boundary element method (BEM) by discretizing the corresponding boundary integral operators and solving the resulting linear system of algebraic equations. Due to the presence of singular and hypersingular integrals, the evaluation of the operator matrix entries requires the use of regularization techniques. In this work, the singular and hypersingular integrals associated with first-order Galerkin discrete boundary operators for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation are reduced to quasi-closed-form expressions. The obtained formulas may prove useful for the implementation of the BEM in two-dimensional electromagnetic, acoustic and quantum mechanical problems.

Symmetric Galerkin boundary element method for computing the quantum states of the electron in a piecewise-uniform mesoscopic system

The quantum behavior of charge carriers in semiconductor structures is often described in terms of the effective mass Schrödinger equation, neglecting the rapid fluctuations of the wave function on the scale of the atomic lattice. For systems with piecewise-constant mass and potential energy, this amounts to solving a set of Helmholtz equations with wavenumbers dictated by the physical parameters of each homogeneous subregion. Making use of the Green function method, the system of differential equations can be expressed in boundary integral form to enable efficient numerical solution. In the present study, this strategy is applied in combination with a Galerkin technique to compute the energy spectrum and the wave functions of the electron in a mesoscopic structure composed of two regions. The proposed formulation differs from those presented before for the same scenario in that it implements a symmetric discretization of the four Helmholtz boundary integral operators, which leads to compact expressions and very accurate results.

Symmetry Breaking in UCA-Based Vortex Waves

In literature, it is often said that a uniform circular array (UCA) composed of a sufficient number of radiating elements is able to generate a vortex wave with arbitrary topological charge. While providing a very simple and intuitive solution without the need for any synthesis method, the excitation of UCAs by means of a progressive phase shift does not always guarantee that vortex waves are correctly generated, since a major role is played by the symmetry and radiation properties of each individual element which constitutes the array. When the UCAs are employed in vortex communication links, these symmetry properties strongly affect the orthogonality of the channel modes and, therefore, the communication efficiency. In this work, the symmetry breaking associated with the radiation of vortex waves by UCAs and its impact on the mode orthogonality are explored in detail.

Circularly Symmetric Light Waves: An Overview

Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) waves were first recognized as those specific vortex solutions of the paraxial Helmholtz equation for which the orbital contribution to the total angular momentum of the beam yields an integer multiple of $\hbar$ along the propagation direction. However, this class of solutions can be generalized to include more sophisticated vector vortex waves with coupled polarization and spatial complexity, that are eigenfunctions of the third component of the angular momentum operator. In this work, a rigorous framework is proposed for the analysis of all the possible families of vortex solutions to the homogeneous Helmholtz equation. Both the scalar and vector cases are studied in depth, making use of an operator approach which emphasizes their intimate connection with the two-dimensional rotation group. Furthermore, a special focus is given to the characterization of the propagation properties of the most popular families of paraxial OAM beams.

Vortex Waves and Channel Capacity: Hopes and Reality

Several recent contributions have envisioned the possibility of increasing currently exploitable maximum channel capacity of a free space link, both at optical and radio frequencies, by using vortex waves, i.e. carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM). Our objective is to disprove these claims by showing that they are in contradiction with very fundamental properties of Maxwellian fields. We demonstrate that the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) of the field cannot be increased by the helical phase structure of electromagnetic vortex waves beyond what can be done without invoking this property. We also show that the often-advocated over-quadratic power decay of OAM beams with distance does not play any fundamental role in the determination of the channel DoF.

On the Spectral Efficiency Limits of an OAM-based Multiplexing Scheme

As reported in several recent publications, a spatial multiplexing involving the transmission of orthogonal waves carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is unable to provide spectral efficiency improvements with respect to the conventional techniques. In this work we emphasize how the limits of an OAM multiple transmission between antenna arrays can be derived from the Shannon capacity formula, taking as a reference the performance of a multiplexing method based on the higher-order channel modes. Our approach clearly indicates that the two techniques offer the same on-axis performance. Conversely, small misalignments in the arrays positions affect the OAM scheme, highlighting the greater robustness of a traditional multiplexing method in the context of radio communications.

OAM multiple transmission using uniform circular arrays: numerical modeling and experimental verification with two digital television signals

In this work we present the outcomes of a radio-frequency OAM transmission between two antenna arrays performed in a real-world context. The analysis is supplemented by deep simulative investigations able to provide both a preliminary overview of the experimental scenario and a posteriori validation of the achieved results. As a first step, the far-field OAM communication link is tested at various frequencies and the corresponding link budget is studied by means of an angular scan generated by the rotation of the receiving system. Then, on the same site, two digital television signals encoded as OAM modes ($\ell$=1 and $\ell$=-1) are simultaneously transmitted at a common frequency of 198.5 MHz with good mode insulation.

A New Approach to the Link Budget Concept for an OAM Communication Link

Following on from the increasing interest for electromagnetic waves carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), different configurations of antenna systems able to generate such beams have been proposed. However, in our opinion, a traditional radiation pattern approach does not provide the right picture of an OAM-based communication link. For this reason we propose a new general concept, the "OAM-link pattern", which takes into account the peculiar phase structure characterizing these waves. Focusing on OAM transmissions between antenna arrays, we introduce a formula for the link budget evaluation which describes the whole communication link and directly leads to a "classically shaped" main lobe pattern for a proper rephased reception in the case of uniform circular arrays.
