Out-of-equilibrium contributions to charm hadrons in a fluid-dynamic approach

Building on previous studies that demonstrated the applicability of a fluid-dynamic description of charm quarks in the quark-gluon plasma, the present work extends the framework by computing the out-of-equilibrium contributions to the distribution function of charm hadrons. The analysis includes corrections arising from the initial out-of-equilibrium distribution of charm quarks after a free-streaming phase, as well as from the freeze-out surface within fluid dynamics. These results enable the exact computation of integrated yields and transverse momentum distributions of charm hadrons for different values of the spatial diffusion coefficient, thereby providing the basis for a systematic determination of the charm transport coefficients. A preliminary comparison of our model with the available experimental data shows compatibility within uncertainties. In addition, the limits of applicability of the approach are identified by determining the transverse-momentum region in which charm hadrons are described by a well-defined, positive distribution function.

Towards a topological data analysis for heavy-ion collisions

The collective expansion of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions suggests that geometry-inspired approaches can be useful in extracting information about the QGP. In this work, a systematic study of observables based on topological data analysis is provided for simulations of heavy-ion collisions. Specifically, we implement persistent homology observables for metric-based complexes in the heavy-ion model Trajectum and provide predictions for Pb-Pb and O-O collisions, where the tunable model parameters are taken from a Bayesian analysis performed in Pb-Pb collisions. This, in particular, allows us to compute systematic uncertainties on our observables from the uncertainties in the model parameters. To bridge between new and already established observables, we build a dictionary linking the topological observables to traditional ones, such as particle multiplicities, momentum distributions, and the elliptic flow coefficient. While the persistent homology observables largely reflect known phenomenology and do not show enhanced sensitivity to the model's tunable parameters compared to conventional observables, this study demonstrates the viability and robustness of topological techniques in the context of heavy-ion physics. They may offer alternative perspectives and potential applications in heavy-ion physics.

Fluid dynamics of charm quarks from heavy to light-ion collisions

Heavy quarks are powerful tools to characterize the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic nuclear collisions. By exploiting a mapping between transport theory and hydrodynamics, we developed a fluid-dynamic description of heavy-quark diffusion in the QCD plasma. We present results for the transverse momentum distributions of charm hadrons and evolution of charm density and diffusion fields obtained using a fluid-dynamic code coupled with the conservation of a heavy-quark current in the QGP in various collision systems.

Quantification of the low-$p_{\rm T}$ pion excess in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC and top RHIC energy

While the abundances of the final state hadrons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are rather well described by the thermal particle production, the shape of the transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, distribution below $p_{\rm T}\approx500$ MeV$/c$, is still poorly understood. We propose a procedure to quantify the model-to-data differences using Bayesian inference techniques, which allows for consistent treatment of the experimental uncertainties and tests the completeness of the available hydrodynamic frameworks. Using relativistic fluid framework Fluid${\it u}$M with PCE coupled to \trento initial state and FastReso decays, we analyse \pt distribution of identified charged hadrons measured in heavy-ion collisions at top RHIC and the LHC energies, and identify an excess of pions produced below $p_{\rm T}\approx500$ MeV$/c$. Our results provide new input for the interpretation of the pion excess as either missing components in the thermal particle yield description or as an evidence for a different particle production mechanism.

QCD challenges from pp to AA collisions -- 4th edition

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the fourth International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to AA, which took place in February 2023 in Padua, Italy. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field of high-energy heavy-ion physics and to stimulate the formulation of concrete suggestions for making progresses on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

Characterisation of analogue Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor test structures implemented in a 65 nm CMOS imaging process

Analogue test structures were fabricated using the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. CMOS 65 nm ISC process. The purpose was to characterise and qualify this process and to optimise the sensor for the next generation of Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors for high-energy physics. The technology was explored in several variants which differed by: doping levels, pixel geometries and pixel pitches (10-25 $μ$m). These variants have been tested following exposure to varying levels of irradiation up to 3 MGy and $10^{16}$ 1 MeV n$_\text{eq}$ cm$^{-2}$. Here the results from prototypes that feature direct analogue output of a 4$\times$4 pixel matrix are reported, allowing the systematic and detailed study of charge collection properties. Measurements were taken both using $^{55}$Fe X-ray sources and in beam tests using minimum ionizing particles. The results not only demonstrate the feasibility of using this technology for particle detection but also serve as a reference for future applications and optimisations.

Fluid dynamics of charm quarks in the quark--gluon plasma

A fluid-dynamic approach to charm-quark diffusion in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is developed for the first time. Results for integrated yields and momentum distributions of charmed hadrons obtained with a fluid-dynamic description for the dynamics of the QGP coupled to an additional heavy-quark-antiquark current are shown. In addition to the thermodynamic Equation of State (EoS), this description uses a heavy-quark diffusion constant which we take from Lattice QCD calculations. The results describe quantitatively experimental data measured at the LHC at the center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV up to $p_{\rm T}\sim$ 4-5 GeV/$c$, showing that charm quarks undergo a very fast hydrodynamization in the medium created by ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Hydrodynamization of charm quarks in heavy-ion collisions

Heavy quarks (i.e. charm and beauty) in heavy-ion collisions are initially produced out of kinetic equilibrium via hard partonic scattering processes. However, recent measurements of anisotropic flow of charmed hadrons pose the question regarding the thermalization of heavy quarks in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Exploiting a mapping between transport theory and fluid dynamics, we develop a fluid-dynamic description for charm quarks and show results for charm-hadron momentum distributions. Inspired by recent Lattice-QCD (LQCD) calculations, we show that a late hydrodynamization within the lifetime of the QGP is possible also for beauty quarks.

Heavy flavors and quarkonia: highlights, open questions, and perspectives

An overview of the phenomenology and experimental results on open heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC and at the LHC energies is presented, with special emphasis on observables that carry information from the different collision stages. Perspective for future measurements and phenomenological modeling, that will shed light on the current open question in heavy-ion collisions, will be also discussed.

Momentum distribution of charm hadrons in a fluid-dynamic approach

Exploiting a mapping between transport theory and fluid dynamics, we show how a fluid-dynamic description of the diffusion of charm quarks in the QCD plasma is feasible. We show results for spectra of charmed hadrons obtained with a fluid-dynamic description of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) coupled with the conservation of a heavy-quark - antiquark current. We compare our calculations with the most recent experimental data in order to provide further constraints on the transport coefficients of the QGP.

Machine Learning Application for $\mathbfΛ$ Hyperon Reconstruction in CBM at FAIR

The Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment at FAIR will investigate the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities. Enhanced production of strange baryons, such as the most abundantly produced $Λ$ hyperons, can signal transition to a new phase of the QCD matter. In this work, the CBM performance for reconstruction of the $Λ$ hyperon via its decay to proton and $π^{-}$ is presented. Decay topology reconstruction is implemented in the Particle-Finder Simple (PFSimple) package with Machine Learning algorithms providing efficient selection of the decays and high signal to background ratio.

Overview of open heavy-flavour and quarkonia measurements with ALICE

Heavy-flavour hadrons, i.e. hadrons containing charm or beauty quarks, are effective probes to test perturbative-QCD (pQCD) calculations, to investigate the different hadronisation mechanisms, and to study the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. Measurements performed in pp and p-Pb collisions have recently revealed unexpected features not in line with the expectations based on previous measurements from $\rm{e^+e^-}$ and ep collisions, showing that charm fragmentation fractions are not universal. The investigation of initial-state effects such as shadowing in the collision of a proton with a heavy nucleus is also performed. Measurements of open heavy-flavour and quarkonia production in Pb-Pb collisions allow for testing the mechanisms of heavy-quark transport, energy loss, and coalescence effects during the hadronisation in the presence of a QCD medium. In this contribution, the most recent results on open heavy-flavour and quarkonia production in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions obtained by the ALICE Collaboration are discussed.

Charge-dependent flow as evidence of strong electromagnetic fields in heavy-ion collisions

The extremely large electromagnetic fields generated in heavy-ion collisions provide access to novel observables that are expected to constrain various key transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma and could help solve one of the outstanding puzzles in QCD: the strong CP problem. In this review we present a brief overview of the theoretical and experimental characterization of these electromagnetic fields. After reviewing the current state, emphasising one of the observables -- the charge-dependent flow -- we discuss the various discrepancies between the measurements and theoretical predictions. Finally, to help resolve the discrepancies, we suggest new measurements and theoretical ideas.

The PHENIX and STAR Collaborations at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and ALICE, CMS, ATLAS and LHCb Collaborations at the Large Hadron Collider have measured the production of charmonium and bottonium states as well as open heavy flavor hadrons via their hadronic and semi-leptonic decays at mid-rapidity and in the semi-muonic decay channel at forward rapidity in pp, p--A and A--A collisions in an energy domain that ranges from $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.2 TeV to $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV in pp collisions and from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 0.2 TeV to $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV in A--A collisions. In this contribution the latest experimental results will be reviewed.

Heavy-flavour hadron decay leptons in Pb--Pb and Xe--Xe collisions at the LHC with ALICE

Heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are sensitive probes of the medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. They are produced in the early stage of the collision, mainly in hard partonic scattering processes, and are expected to experience the whole collision evolution interacting with the medium constituents via both elastic and inelastic processes. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) is one of the main experimental observables that allow us to investigate the interaction strength of heavy quarks with the medium. The ALICE collaboration measured the production of open heavy-flavour hadrons via their semi-leptonic decays to electrons at mid-rapidity and to muons at forward rapidity in elementary proton-proton (pp) collisions as well as p--Pb, Pb--Pb and in Xe--Xe collisions. Recent results will be discussed, and model calculations including the interaction of heavy quarks with the hot and dense QCD medium will be compared with the data.

Measurements of heavy-flavour production and azimuthal anisotropy in Pb--Pb collisions with the ALICE detector

Hadrons containing heavy quarks, i.e. charm or beauty, are unique probes of the properties of the hot and dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. Due to their large masses, heavy quarks are produced at the initial stage of the collision, almost exclusively via hard partonic scattering processes. Therefore, they are expected to experience the full collision history propagating through the QCD medium losing energy via elastic and inelastic collisions with the medium constituents. The ALICE collaboration has measured the production of open heavy-flavour hadrons via their hadronic and semi-electronic decays at mid-rapidity and in the semi-muonic decay channel at \mbox{forward rapidity} in pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions. In this talk the latest results on the open \mbox{heavy-flavour nuclear modification factor, $R_\mathrm{AA}$, and elliptic flow, $v_{2}$, are presented}.

Elliptic flow of heavy-flavour decay electrons in Pb-Pb collision at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV with ALICE

We present the elliptic flow $v_{2}$ of electrons from the semi-leptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons at mid-rapidity for semi-central ($20-40%$ centrality) Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV measured with the ALICE detector. A positive $v_{2}$ is observed at low $p_\mathrm{T}$ in semi-central collisions. Comparisons with previous measurements obtained at lower collision energy at RHIC in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 0.2 TeV and with theoretical models are also presented.
