Magnetic corrections to the fermionic Casimir effect with Lorentz symmetry violation and a compactified extra dimension

In this work I study the effect of a magnetic field on the Casimir effect due to a massive, charged fermion field that violates Lorentz invariance in an aether-like manner while maintaining CPT, in a space with one toroidally compactified extra dimension. I take the fermion field to obey MIT bag boundary conditions on two identical square parallel plates. I do this investigation using the zeta function technique that enables me to calculate the Casimir energy and pressure in the presence of a constant magnetic field perpendicular to the plates. I examine the cases of timelike Lorentz violation, of spacelike Lorentz violation in the direction of the magnetic field, of spacelike Lorentz violation in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field, and of spacelike Lorentz violation in the direction of the compactified extra dimension. In all scenarios, I find simple and accurate analytic expressions of the magnetic field dependent Casimir energy and pressure.

Vacuum Energy and Topological Mass from a Constant Magnetic Field and Boundary Conditions in Coupled Scalar Field Theories

We investigate the combined effects of a uniform magnetic field and boundary conditions on vacuum energy and topological mass generation in a coupled scalar field theory. The system consists of a real scalar field, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, interacting via self- and cross-couplings with a gauge-coupled complex scalar field obeying mixed boundary conditions between two perfectly reflecting parallel plates. The magnetic field induces Landau quantization, leading to novel contributions. Employing zeta-function regularization within the effective potential formalism, we derive the renormalized effective potential up to second order in the coupling constants without imposing a vanishing magnetic field in the renormalization scheme. Our renormalization approach preserves magnetic contributions while properly removing divergences, enabling a consistent treatment of finite-size corrections, magnetic effects, and interaction terms. We compute the vacuum energy per unit area of the plates, analyze the emergence of a topological mass from boundary and magnetic contributions, and evaluate the first-order coupling-constant corrections at two-loop order. Detailed asymptotic analysis are presented for both weak- and strong-field regimes, revealing exponential suppression at high magnetic fields and nontrivial polynomial and logarithmic behavior in the weak-field limit.

Finite temperature Casimir effect of a Lorentz-violating scalar with higher order derivatives

In this work I study the finite temperature Casimir effect caused by a complex and massive scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like manner. The Lorentz invariance breaking is caused by a constant space-like vector directly coupled to higher order field derivatives. This vector needs to be space-like in order to avoid non-causality problems that will arise with a time-like vector. I investigate the two scenarios of the scalar field satisfying either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions on a pair of flat parallel plates. I use the generalized zeta function technique that enables me to obtain the Helmholtz free energy and the Casimir pressure when the Casimir plates are in thermal equilibrium with a heat reservoir at finite temperature. I investigate two different directions of the unit vector, parallel and perpendicular to the plates. I examine both scenarios for both types of boundary conditions and, in both cases and for the two different boundary conditions, I obtain simple analytic expressions of the Casimir energy and pressure in the three asymptotic limits of small plate distance, high temperature, and large mass, examining all combinations of boundary conditions, unit vector direction, and asymptotic limits.

Magnetic Casimir effect of a Lorentz-violating scalar with higher order derivatives

In this paper I study the Casimir effect caused by a charged and massive scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like manner. The breaking of Lorentz invariance is implemented by a constant space-like vector directly coupled to higher order derivatives of the field. I take this vector to be space-like to avoid non-causality problems that could arise with a time-like vector. I examine the two scenarios of the scalar field satisfying either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions on a pair of plane parallel plates. I use the zeta function technique to investigate the effect of a constant magnetic field, perpendicular to the plates, on the Casimir energy and pressure. I examine two different directions of the unit vector: parallel and perpendicular to the plates. I fully examine both scenarios for both types of boundary conditions and, in both cases and for both types of boundary conditions, I obtain simple analytic expressions of the Casimir energy and pressure in the three asymptotic limits of strong magnetic field, large mass, and small plate distance.

Fermionic Casimir effect at finite temperature in Horava-Lifshitz theories

In this work, I study the finite temperature Casimir effect due to a massless fermion field that violates Lorentz invariance according to the Horava-Lifshitz theory. I investigate a fermion field that obeys MIT bag boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates. I carry out this study using the generalized zeta function technique that enables me to obtain the Helmholtz free energy and the Casimir pressure when the Casimir plates are in thermal equilibrium with a heat reservoir at finite temperature. I investigate the cases when the parameter associated with the violation of Lorentz invariance is even or odd and the limits of low and high temperature relative to the inverse of plate distance, examining all possible combinations of the above quantities. In all scenarios studied, I obtain simple and accurate analytic expressions of the free energy and the temperature-dependent Casimir pressure.

Casimir effect of a doubly Lorentz-violating scalar in magnetic field

In this work I study the Casimir effect caused by a charged and massive scalar field that violates Lorentz symmetry in an aether-like and CPT even manner, by direct coupling between the field derivatives and two fixed orthogonal unit vectors. I call this a "double" Lorentz violation. The field will satisfy either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions on a pair of plane parallel plates. I use the generalized zeta function technique to examine the effect of a uniform magnetic field, perpendicular to the plates, on the Casimir energy and pressure. Three different pairs of mutual directions of the unit vectors are possible: timelike and spacelike perpendicular to the magnetic field, timelike and spacelike parallel to the magnetic field, spacelike perpendicular and spacelike parallel to the magnetic field. I fully examine all of them for both types of boundary conditions listed above and, in all cases and for both types of boundary conditions, I obtain simple expressions of the zeta function, Casimir energy and pressure in the three asymptotic limits of strong magnetic field, large mass, and small plate distance.

Magnetic corrections to the fermionic Casimir effect in Horava-Lifshitz theories

In this paper I investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the Casimir effect due to a massless and charged fermion field that violates Lorentz invariance according to the Horava-Lifshitz theory. I focus on the case of a fermion field that obeys MIT bag boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates. I carry out this investigation using the $ζ$-function technique that allows me to obtain Casimir energy and pressure in the presence of a uniform magnetic field orthogonal to the plates. I investigate the cases of the parameter associated with the violation of Lorentz invariance being even or odd and the cases of weak and strong magnetic field, examining all possible combinations of the above quantities. In all cases I obtain simple and very accurate analytic expressions of the magnetic field dependent Casimir energy and pressure.

Thermal neutrino self-energy beyond the contact approximation

Using the Schwinger proper time method I calculate exactly the bubble diagram contribution to the thermal neutrino self-energy, obtaining exact results that cannot be achieved using the contact approximation. These results allow me to obtain the dispersion relation for neutrino in a medium under several different conditions.

Casimir effect with one large extra dimension

In this work I study the Casimir effect of a massive complex scalar field in the presence of one large compactified extra dimension. I investigate the case of a scalar field confined between two parallel plates in the macroscopic three dimensions, and examine the cases of Dirichlet and mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on the plates. The case of Neumann boundary conditions is uninteresting, since it yields the same result as the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions. The scalar field also permeates a fourth compactified dimension of a size that could be comparable to the distance between the plates. This investigation is carried out using the $ζ$-function regularization technique that allows me to obtain exact expressions for the Casimir energy and pressure. I discover that, when the compactified length of the extra dimension is similar to the plate distance, or slightly larger, the Casimir energy and pressure become significantly different than their standard three dimensional values, for either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Therefore, the Casimir effect of a quantum field that permeates a compactified fourth dimension, could be used as an effective tool to explore the existence of large compactified extra dimensions.

Thermal effects on the Casimir energy of a Lorentz-violating scalar in magnetic field

In this work I investigate the finite temperature Casimir effect due to a massive and charged scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like way. I study the cases of Dirichlet and mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates. I will not examine the case of Neumann boundary conditions since it produces the same results as Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main tool used in this investigation is the $ζ$-function technique that allows me to obtain the Helmoltz free energy and Casimir pressure in the presence of a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the plates. Three cases of Lorentz asymmetry are studied: timelike, spacelike and perpendicular to the magnetic field, spacelike and parallel to the magnetic field. Asymptotic cases of small plate distance, high temperature, strong magnetic field, and large mass will be considered for each of the three types of Lorentz asymmetry and each of the two types of boundary conditions examined. In all these cases simple and very accurate analytic expressions of the thermal corrections to the Casimir energy and pressure are obtained and I discover that these corrections strongly depend on the direction of the unit vector that produces the breaking of the Lorentz symmetry.

Casimir effect of a Lorentz-violating scalar in magnetic field

In this paper I study the Casimir effect caused by a charged and massive scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like manner. I investigate the case of a scalar field that satisfies Dirichlet or mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of very large plane parallel plates. The case of Neumann boundary conditions is straightforward and will not be examined in detail. I use the $ζ$-function regularization technique to study the effect of a constant magnetic field, orthogonal to the plates, on the Casimir energy and pressure. I investigate the cases of a timelike Lorentz asymmetry, a spacelike Lorentz asymmetry in the direction perpendicular to the plates, and a spacelike asymmetry in the plane of the plates and, in all those cases, derive simple analytic expressions for the zeta function, Casimir energy and pressure in the limits of small plate distance, strong magnetic field and large scalar field mass. I discover that the Casimir energy and pressure, and their magnetic corrections, all strongly depend on the direction of the unit vector that implements the breaking of the Lorentz symmetry.

Magnetic field effects on neutrino oscillations

Using the exact propagators in a constant magnetic field, the neutrino self-energy has been calculated to all orders in the field strength $B$ within the minimal extension of the Weinberg-Salam model with massive Dirac neutrinos. A neutrino dispersion relation, effective potential and effective mass have been obtained that depend on $B$. The consequences of this effective potential on neutrino oscillations have been explored, and resonance conditions have been obtained for magnetic fields $0<eB \le 4m^2_e$, where $e$ is the elementary charge and $m_e$ is the electron mass. The oscillation length has also been obtained, showing that $ν_e$-$ν_μ$ resonant oscillations in magnetic field are likely to occur in the proximity of most stars generating high magnetic fields.

Magnetic field corrections to the repulsive Casimir effect at finite temperature

I investigate the finite temperature Casimir effect for a charged and massless scalar field satisfying mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of plane parallel plates of infinite size. The effect of a uniform magnetic field, perpendicular to the plates, on the Helmholtz free energy and Casimir pressure is studied. The zeta-function regularization technique is used to obtain finite results. Simple analytic expressions are obtained for the zeta function and the free energy, in the limits of small plate distance, high temperature and strong magnetic field. The Casimir pressure is obtained in each of the three limits and the situation of a magnetic field present between and outside the plates, as well as that of a magnetic field present only between the plates is examined. It is discovered that, in the small plate distance and high temperature limits, the repulsive pressure is less when the magnetic field is present between the plates but not outside, than it is when the magnetic field is present between and outside the plates.

Spherical Casimir effect for a massive scalar field on the three dimensional ball

The zeta function regularization technique is used to study the Casimir effect for a scalar field of mass $m$ satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on a spherical surface of radius $a$. In the case of large scalar mass, $ma\gg1$, simple analytic expressions are obtained for the zeta function and Casimir energy of the scalar field when it is confined inside the spherical surface, and when it is confined outside the spherical surface. In both cases the Casimir energy is exact up to order $a^{-2}m^{-1}$ and contains the expected divergencies, which can be eliminated using the well established renormalization procedure for the spherical Casimir effect. The case of a scalar field present in both the interior and exterior region is also examined and, for $ma\gg 1$, the zeta function, the Casimir energy, and the Casimir force are obtained. The obtained Casimir energy and force are exact up to order $a^{-2}m^{-1}$ and $a^{-3}m^{-1}$ respectively. In this scenario both energy and force are finite and do not need to be renormalized, and the force is found to produce an outward pressure on the spherical surface.

Finite temperature Casimir effect for massive scalars in a magnetic field

The finite temperature Casimir effect for a charged, massive scalar field confined between very large, perfectly conducting parallel plates is studied using the zeta function regularization technique. The scalar field satisfies Dirichlet boundary conditions at the plates and a magnetic field perpendicular to the plates is present. Four equivalent expressions for the zeta function are obtained, which are exact to all orders in the magnetic field strength, temperature, scalar field mass, and plate distance. The zeta function is used to calculate the Helmholtz free energy of the scalar field and the Casimir pressure on the plates, in the case of high temperature, small plate distance, strong magnetic field and large scalar mass. In all cases, simple analytic expressions of the zeta function, free energy and pressure are obtained, which are very accurate and valid for practically all values of temperature, plate distance, magnetic field and mass.

The zeta function regularization technique is used to study the finite temperature Casimir effect for a charged and massless scalar field confined between parallel plates and satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions at the plates. A magnetic field perpendicular to the plates is included. Three equivalent expressions for the zeta function are obtained, which are exact to all orders in the magnetic field strength, temperature and plate distance. These expressions of the zeta function are used to calculate the Helmholtz free energy of the scalar field and the pressure on the plates, in the case of high temperature, small plate distance and strong magnetic field. In all cases, simple analytic expressions are obtained for the free energy and pressure which are accurate and valid for practically all values of temperature, plate distance and magnetic field.

Finite Temperature Casimir Effect for Massless Majorana Fermions in a Magnetic Field

The zeta function regularization technique is used to study the finite temperature Casimir effect for a massless Majorana fermion field confined between parallel plates and satisfying bag boundary conditions. A magnetic field perpendicular to the plates is included. An expression for the zeta function is obtained, which is exact to all orders in the magnetic field strength, temperature and plate distance. The zeta function is used to calculate the Helmholtz free energy of the Majorana field and the pressure on the plates, in the case of weak magnetic field and strong magnetic field. In both cases, simple analytic expressions are obtained for the free energy and pressure which are very accurate and valid for all values of the temperature and plate distance.

Neutrino self-energy in external magnetic field

Using the exact propagators in a constant magnetic field, the neutrino self-energy has been calculated to all orders in the field strength B within the minimal extension of the Weinberg-Salam model with massive Dirac neutrinos. A simple and very accurate formula for the self-energy is obtained, that is valid for 0 < B << m^2_W/e and for and for neutrino transverse momentum to the magnetic field p_{\perp} << m_W. I discuss the implications of this finding to the dispersion of massless neutrinos in vacuum and in a charge-symmetric medium, and to the magnetic field induced resonance transitions of massive neutrinos inside supernovae and magnetars, and calculate the neutrino magnetic moment.
