Metal to insulator transition at the surface of $V_2O_3$ thin films: an in-situ view

$V_2O_3$ has long been studied as a prototypical strongly correlated material. The difficulty in obtaining clean, well ordered surfaces, however, hindered the use of surface sensitive techniques to study its electronic structure. Here we show by mean of X-ray diffraction and electrical transport that thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition can reproduce the functionality of bulk $V_2O_3$. The same films, when transferred in-situ, show an excellent surface quality as indicated by scanning tunnelling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction, representing a viable approach to study the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in $V_2O_3$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Combined, these two aspects pave the way for the use of $V_2O_3$ thin films in device-oriented heterostructures.

Enhanced ambient stability of exfoliated black phosphorus by passivation with nickel nanoparticles

Since its discovery, the environmental instability of exfoliated black phosphorus (2D bP) has emerged as a challenge that hampers its wide application in chemistry, physics, and materials science. Many studies have been carried out to overcome this drawback. Here we show a relevant enhancement of ambient stability in few-layer bP decorated with nickel nanoparticles as compared to pristine bP. In detail, the behavior of the Ni-functionalized material exposed to ambient conditions in the dark is accurately studied by TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), Raman Spectroscopy, and high resolution X-ray Photoemission and Absorption Spectroscopy. These techniques provide a morphological and quantitative insight of the oxidation process taking place at the surface of the bP flakes. In the presence of Ni NPs, the decay time of 2D bP to phosphorus oxides is more than three time slower compared to pristine bP, demonstrating an improved structural stability within twenty months of observation.

Disentangling Vacancy Oxidation on Metallicity-Sorted Carbon Nanotubes

Pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are rather inert to O$_2$ and N$_2$, which for low doses chemisorb only on defect sites or vacancies of the SWCNTs at the ppm level. However, very low doping has a major effect on the electronic properties and conductivity of the SWCNTs. Already at low O$_2$ doses (80 L), the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) O 1s signal becomes saturated, indicating nearly all the SWCNT's vacancies have been oxidized. As a result, probing vacancy oxidation on SWCNTs via XPS yields spectra with rather low signal-to-noise ratios, even for metallicity-sorted SWCNTs. We show that, even under these conditions, the first principles density functional theory calculated Kohn-Sham O 1s binding energies may be used to assign the XPS O 1s spectra for oxidized vacancies on SWCNTs into its individual components. This allows one to determine the specific functional groups or bonding environments measured. We find the XPS O 1s signal is mostly due to three O-containing functional groups on SWCNT vacancies: epoxy (C$_2$$>$O), carbonyl (C$_2$$>$C$=$O), and ketene (C$=$C$=$O), as ordered by abundance. Upon oxidation of nearly all the SWCNT's vacancies, the central peak's intensity for the metallic SWCNT sample is 60\% greater than for the semiconducting SWCNT sample. This suggests a greater abundance of O-containing defect structures on the metallic SWCNT sample. For both metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs, we find O$_2$ does not contribute to the measured XPS O~1s spectra.

Reversible phase transformation and doubly-charged anions at the surface of simple cubic RbC60

The simple cubic phase of a RbC60 thin film has been studied using photoelectron spectroscopy. The simple cubic-to-dimer transition is found to be reversible at the film surface. A sharp Fermi edge is observed and a lower limit of 0.5 eV is found for the surface Hubbard U, pointing to a strongly-correlated metallic character of thin-film simple cubic RbC60. A molecular charge state is identified in the valence band and core level photoemission spectra which arises from C602- anions and contributes to the spectral intensity at the Fermi level.

Characterization of high-quality MgB2(0001) epitaxial films on Mg(0001)

High-grade MgB2(0001) films were grown on Mg(0001) by means of ultra-high-vacuum molecular beam epitaxy. Low energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction data indicate that thick films are formed by epitaxially oriented grains with MgB2 bulk structure. The quality of the films allowed angle-resolved photoemission and polarization dependent x-ray absorption measurements. For the first time, we report the band mapping along the Gamma-A direction and the estimation of the electron-phonon coupling constant l ~ 0.55 for the surface state electrons.
