Magnetism in nanometer-thick magnetite

The oldest known magnetic material, magnetite, is of current interest for use in spintronics as a thin film. An open question is how thin can magnetite films be and still retain the robust ferrimagnetism required for many applications. We have grown one-nanometer-thick magnetite crystals and characterized them in situ by electron and photoelectron microscopies including selected-area x-ray circular dichroism. Well-defined magnetic patterns are observed in individual nano-crystals up to at least 520 K, establishing the retention of ferrimagnetism in magnetite two-unit-cells thick.

On the magnetization textures in NiPd nanostructures

We have observed peculiar magnetization textures in Ni$_{80}$Pd$_{20}$ nanostructures using three different imaging techniques: magnetic force microscopy, photoemission electron microscopy under polarized X-ray absorption, and scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis. The appearances of diamond-like domains with strong lateral charges and of weak stripe structures bring into evidence the presence of both a transverse and a perpendicular anisotropy in these nanostrips. This anisotropy is seen to reinforce as temperature decreases, as testified by a simplified domain structure at 150 K. A thermal stress relaxation model is proposed to account for these observations. Elastic calculations coupled to micromagnetic simulations support qualitatively this model.

Making ARPES Measurements on Corrugated Monolayer Crystals: Suspended Exfoliated Single-Crystal Graphene

Free-standing exfoliated monolayer graphene is an ultra-thin flexible membrane, which exhibits out of plane deformation or corrugation. In this paper, a technique is described to measure the band structure of such free-standing graphene by angle-resolved photoemission. Our results show that photoelectron coherence is limited by the crystal corrugation. However, by combining surface morphology measurements of the graphene roughness with angle-resolved photoemission, energy dependent quasiparticle lifetime and bandstructure measurements can be extracted. Our measurements rely on our development of an analytical formulation for relating the crystal corrugation to the photoemission linewidth. Our ARPES measurements show that, despite significant deviation from planarity of the crystal, the electronic structure of exfoliated suspended graphene is nearly that of ideal, undoped graphene; we measure the Dirac point to be within 25 meV of $E_F$ . Further, we show that suspended graphene behaves as a marginal Fermi-liquid, with a quasiparticle lifetime which scales as $(E - E_F)^{-1}$; comparison with other graphene and graphite data is discussed.

Spectro-microscopy of single and multi-layer graphene supported by a weakly interacting substrate

We report measurements of the electronic structure and surface morphology of exfoliated graphene on an insulating substrate using angle-resolved photoemission and low energy electron diffraction. Our results show that although exfoliated graphene is microscopically corrugated, the valence band retains a massless fermionic dispersion, with a Fermi velocity of ~10^6 m/s. We observe a close relationship between the morphology and electronic structure, which suggests that controlling the interaction between graphene and the supporting substrate is essential for graphene device applications.

Magnetostructure of MnAs on GaAs revisited

The ferromagnetic to nonferromagnetic (α-β) phase transition in epitaxial MnAs layers on GaAs(100) is studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism photoemission electron microscopy in order to elucidate the nature of the controversial nonferromagnetic state of β-MnAs. In the coexistence region of the two phases the β phase shows a clear XMLD signal characteristic of antiferromagnetism. The nature and the possible causes of the elusiveness of this magnetic state are discussed.

Layer-resolved imaging of domain wall interactions in magnetic tunnel junction-like trilayers

We have performed a layer-resolved, microscopic study of interactions between domain walls in two magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic one, using high-resolution x-ray photoemission electron microscopy. Domain walls in the hard magnetic Co layer of a Co/Al2O3/FeNi trilayer with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy strongly modify the local magnetization direction in the soft magnetic FeNi layer. The stray fields associated to the domain walls lead to an antiparallel coupling between the local Co and FeNi moments. For domain walls parallel to the easy magnetization axis this interaction is limited to the domain wall region itself. For strongly charged (head-on or tail-to-tail) walls, the antiparallel coupling dominates the interaction over radial distances up to several micrometers from the centre of the domain wall.

Nanometers-thick self-organized Fe stripes: bridging the gap between surfaces and magnetic materials

We have fabricated 5nm-high Fe(110) stripes by self-organized (SO) growth on a slightly vicinal R(110)/Al2O3(11-20) surface, with R=Mo, W. Remanence, coercivity and domain patterns were observed at room temperature (RT). This contrasts with conventional SO epitaxial systems, that are superparamagnetic or even non-magnetic at RT due to their flatness. Our process should help to overcome superparamagnetism without compromise on the lateral size if SO systems are ever to be used in applications.
