A quantitative analysis of Galilei's observations of Jupiter satellites from the Sidereus Nuncius

We present a new careful and comprehensive analysis the observations of the satellites of Jupiter from the Sidereus Nuncius that extends and complements previous similar studies. Each observation is compared to the predictions obtained using a modern sky simulator, verifying and trying to understand them individually. The work considers both the information that can be extracted from the sketches and the angular measurements reported by Galilei. Angular measurements allow assessing the absolute accuracy in relation to modern ephemerides. We evaluate the performances of the telescope in terms of separation power of close-by satellites and the inefficiency in the detection connected to the proximity to the disk. A sinusoidal fit of the data, allows measuring the relative major semi-axes of the satellites' orbits and their periods with a statistical precision of 2-4\% and 0.1-0.3\% respectively. The posterior fit error is used to estimate the measurements precision. We show that with this data one can infer in a convincing way the third law of Kepler for the Jupiter system. The 1:2:4 orbital resonance between the periods of Io and Europa/Ganymede can be determined with \% precision. In order to obtain these results it is important to separate the four datasets. This operation was an extremely difficult task for Galilei. Nevertheless we show how some indication on the periods emerge from the using the modern Lomb-Scargle technique on the full data-set. We briefly extend the use of the simulator to verify the accuracy in the seven observations of the Moon and the performance in reproducing the Pleiades, the Orion belt, the Orion head and the Beehive cluster. Finally we present images obtained with a replica of the telescope that highlights the challenges of these observations thus confirming the excellence underlying this amazing set of early scientific data.

Future Opportunities in Accelerator-based Neutrino Physics

This document summarizes the conclusions of the Neutrino Town Meeting held at CERN in October 2018 to review the neutrino field at large with the aim of defining a strategy for accelerator-based neutrino physics in Europe. The importance of the field across its many complementary components is stressed. Recommendations are presented regarding the accelerator based neutrino physics, pertinent to the European Strategy for Particle Physics. We address in particular i) the role of CERN and its neutrino platform, ii) the importance of ancillary neutrino cross-section experiments, and iii) the capability of fixed target experiments as well as present and future high energy colliders to search for the possible manifestations of neutrino mass generation mechanisms.

Research and Development for Near Detector Systems Towards Long Term Evolution of Ultra-precise Long-baseline Neutrino Experiments

With the discovery of non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. A strong European contribution to these efforts is possible.

An Appraisal of Muon Neutrino Disappearance at Short Baseline

Neutrino physics is nowadays receiving more and more attention as a possible source of information for the long standing problem of new Physics beyond the Standard Model. The recent measurements of the third mixing angle $θ_{13}$ in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourage to pursue the still missing results on the leptonic CP violation and the absolute neutrino masses. However, several puzzling and incomplete measurements are in place which deserve an exhaustive evaluation and study. We will report about the present situation of the muon disappearance measurements at small $L/E$ in the context of the current CERN project to revitalize the neutrino field in Europe and the search for sterile neutrinos. We will then illustrate the achievements that a double muon spectrometer can attain in terms of discovery of new neutrino states, performing a newly developed analysis.

OPERA: waiting for the tau

The OPERA experiment, whose aim is the direct observation of nu_mu ~> nu_tau oscillations in appearance mode in the CNGS high-energy neutrino beam, consists of a high-granularity modular target of nuclear emulsions-lead "bricks", richly instrumented with electronic detectors necessary for the location of neutrino interactions and kinematic analysis. After the first short runs of August 2006, October 2006 and October 2007, the experiment started early this summer its first long physics run (about 150 days). Operating at the final target mass of 1.35 kton, the 2008 run can realistically offer the first chance to observe a tau originated from a flavour oscillated nu_mu. This contribution will discuss the different aspects of the experiment, the challenges of the data handling and the recent achievements. It will also outline the various steps required for the analysis in nuclear emulsions from the "brick finding" to the vertex reconstruction.

Charm and beauty production at HERA

A selection of topics on open heavy quark production at HERA are reviewed here. Measurements of charm fragmentation parameters will be presented together with developments in the study of D* di-jet angular distributions. Charm production in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) is also discussed. Finally we deal with recent measurements of b cross sections using impact parameters in both DIS and photoproduction regimes.
