A singularity theorem in terms of asymptotic expansion

We prove a sharp singularity theorem in which the classical focusing hypothesis of Hawking--Penrose theory is replaced by a condition on the asymptotic volume growth of timelike geodesics. More precisely, let $(M,g)$ be a smooth, globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold satisfying the strong energy condition, and let $V\subset M$ be a smooth, compact Cauchy hypersurface. We associate to the future-directed timelike geodesics orthogonal to $V$ asymptotic volume-expansion invariants $θ_α$, and show that a uniform lower bound $θ_α\ge c>0$ forces a sharp upper bound on the time separation between $V$ and its chronological past. In particular, $(M,g)$ is past timelike geodesically incomplete. The estimate is sharp and equality is attained by Lorentzian cones. Moreover, in the smooth setting we prove a rigidity theorem showing that equality characterizes these cone models. The argument extends to globally hyperbolic Lorentzian length spaces satisfying the synthetic strong energy condition in the form of the Timelike Measure Contraction Property, TMCP(0,N). In this non-smooth setting we also obtain corresponding raywise and measure-rigidity statements.

The Null Energy Condition through the Lens of Optimal Transport: Smooth and Non-Smooth Spacetimes

We survey recent developments on the null energy condition (NEC) from the perspective of optimal transport, with emphasis on non-smooth Lorentzian geometry. After recalling the role of classical energy conditions in general relativity, we discuss the relation between Ricci curvature and entropy convexity in optimal transport. The main focus is the authors' optimal-transport characterization of the NEC. In the smooth setting, the NEC is equivalent to displacement concavity of the Shannon entropy power along suitable null-geodesic transport plans supported on null hypersurfaces and measured with respect to rigged measures. We review the geometric ingredients of this characterization and applications, including a weighted Hawking area theorem. We then turn to the synthetic theory introduced in a second paper of the authors. Synthetic null hypersurfaces are defined using achronal boundaries, gauge functions, and reference measures in topological causal spaces. In this framework, the displacement-concavity characterization becomes a synthetic curvature condition, $\mathsf{NC}^{e}(N)$, meaningful without differentiable structure. We discuss compatibility with the smooth theory, invariance under natural changes of gauge and reference measure, and stability under convergence. Finally, we present a synthetic version of Penrose's singularity theorem for continuous Lorentzian metrics. These results indicate that geometric and causal consequences of the NEC persist beyond the smooth setting and highlight optimal transport as a framework connecting curvature, causality, and singularity formation in Lorentzian geometry.

Stability of Synthetic Timelike Ricci Bounds under $C^0$-Limits and Applications to Impulsive Gravitational Waves

We investigate the stability of timelike Ricci curvature lower bounds under low-regularity limits of Lorentzian metrics. Specifically, we prove that the synthetic curvature-dimension condition $\mathsf{TCD}^e_p(K,N)$, which provides an optimal transport formulation of the Hawking-Penrose strong energy condition, is stable under locally uniform convergence of smooth Lorentzian metrics, provided a uniform global hyperbolicity assumption holds. As a consequence, smooth locally uniform limits of vacuum spacetimes satisfy the strong energy condition, even though curvature is not controlled a priori. As a main application, we study impulsive gravitational waves - spacetimes with Lipschitz continuous metrics - and show that large classes of such waves satisfy synthetic timelike Ricci curvature lower bounds. In the case of Minkowski background, we further establish synthetic upper Ricci curvature bounds. Our approach relies on constructing suitable smooth approximations with lower bounds on the timelike Ricci, and analyzing the limiting behavior via Lorentzian optimal transport. We also apply the aforementioned stability theorem to weak solutions of the Einstein equations arising from the nonlinear interaction of impulsive gravitational waves. These results yield new geometric insights into low-regularity solutions of the Einstein equations.

A splitting theorem for manifolds with a convex boundary component and applications

We prove a warped product splitting theorem for manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below in the spirit of [Croke-Kleiner, \emph{Duke Math.\;J}.\;(1992)], but instead of asking that one boundary component is compact and mean-convex, we require that it is parabolic and convex. We then deduce several applications, including splitting theorems and first Betti number rigidity results for - $3$-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature, - $4$-manifolds with weakly bounded geometry, non-negative $2$-Ricci curvature, scalar curvature $\geq 1$. In particular, the latter aswers to a rigidity question posed by [Chodosh-Li-Stryker, \emph{JEMS},\;(2024)]. The proofs rely on a metric gluing of Riemannian manifolds with boundary, resulting in a non-smooth metric space. To address this lack of smoothness, we employ synthetic tools specifically developed for non-smooth settings, with a focus on those based on optimal transportation.

Lorentzian Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and pre-compactness

The goal of the paper is to introduce a convergence à la Gromov-Hausdorff for Lorentzian spaces, building on $ε$-nets consisting of causal diamonds and relying only on the time separation function. This yields a geometric notion of convergence, which can be applied to synthetic Lorentzian spaces (Lorentzian pre-length spaces) or smooth spacetimes. Among the main results, we prove a Lorentzian counterpart of the celebrated Gromov's pre-compactness theorem for metric spaces, where controlled covers by balls are replaced by controlled covers by diamonds. This yields a geometric pre-compactness result for classes of globally hyperbolic spacetimes, satisfying a uniform doubling property on Cauchy hypersurfaces and a suitable control on the causality, and a curvature-driven pre-compactness result. The final part of the paper establishes several applications: we show that Chruściel-Grant approximations are an instance of the Lorentzian Gromov-Hausdorff convergence here introduced, we prove that timelike sectional curvature bounds are stable under such a convergence, we introduce timelike blow-up tangents and discuss connections with the main conjecture of causal set theory.

On the geometry of synthetic null hypersurfaces

This paper develops a synthetic framework for the geometric and analytic study of null (lightlike) hypersurfaces in non-smooth spacetimes. Drawing from optimal transport and recent advances in Lorentzian geometry and causality theory, we define a synthetic null hypersurface as a triple $(H, G, \mathfrak{m})$: $H$ is a closed achronal set in a topological causal space, $G$ is a gauge function encoding affine parametrizations along null generators, and $\mathfrak{m}$ is a Radon measure serving as a synthetic analog of the rigged measure. This generalizes classical differential geometric structures to potentially singular spacetimes. The central object is the synthetic null energy condition ($\mathsf{NC}^e(N)$), defined via the concavity of an entropy power functional along optimal transport, with parametrization given by the gauge $G$. This condition is invariant under changes of gauge and measure within natural equivalence classes. It agrees with the classical Null Energy Condition in the smooth setting and it applies to low-regularity spacetimes. A key property of the $\mathsf{NC}^e(N)$ condition is the stability under convergence of synthetic null hypersurfaces. The $\mathsf{NC}^e(N)$ condition is also remarkably fruitful for applications. First, it provides a framework for a synthetic version of Hawking's area theorem. Second, the celebrated Penrose's singularity theorem is proved for continuous spacetimes, and the existence of trapped regions is settled in the general setting of topological causal spaces satisfying the $\mathsf{NC}^e(N)$.

Gromov-Hausdorff and intrinsic flat convergence of RCD(K,N) and Kato spaces

We consider metric measure spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$ satisfying the properties (ETR), (LBD), and with an almost everywhere connected regular set. In particular, these assumptions are fulfilled by non-collapsed RCD$(K,N)$ spaces without boundary, as well as by non-collapsed strong Kato limit spaces without boundary. For both classes, we study orientability in the sense of metric currents, establish stability of orientation under pointed Gromov--Hausdorff convergence, and show that the pointed Gromov--Hausdorff limit coincides with the local flat limit.

On manifolds with almost non-negative Ricci curvature and integrally-positive $k^{th}$-scalar curvature

We consider manifolds with almost non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly positive integral lower bounds on the sum of the lowest $k$ eigenvalues of the Ricci tensor. If $(M^n,g)$ is a Riemannian manifold satisfying such curvature bounds for $k=2$, then we show that $M$ is contained in a neighbourhood of controlled width of an isometrically embedded $1$-dimensional sub-manifold. From this, we deduce several metric and topological consequences: $M$ has at most linear volume growth and at most two ends, it has bounded 1-Urysohn width, the first Betti number of $M$ is bounded above by $1$, and there is precise information on elements of infinite order in $π_1(M)$. If $(M^n,g)$ is a Riemannian manifold satisfying such bounds for $k\geq 2$, then we show that $M$ has at most $(k-1)$-dimensional behavior at large scales. If $k=n={\rm dim}(M)$, so that the integral lower bound is on the scalar curvature, assuming in addition that the $(n-2)$-Ricci curvature is non-negative, we prove that the dimension drop at large scales improves to $n-2$. From the above results we deduce topological restrictions, such as upper bounds on the first Betti number.

Half Space Property in RCD(K,N) spaces

The goal of this note is to prove the Half Space Property for RCD(0,N) spaces, namely that if (X,d,m) is a parabolic RCD(0,N) space and $ C \subset X \times \mathbb{R}$ is locally the boundary of a perimeter minimizing set and it is contained in a half space, then $C$ is a locally finite union of horizontal slices. The same result is proved for RCD(K,N) spaces, for any $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $N\in (1,\infty)$, under the stronger assumption that $C$ is the boundary of a \emph{globally} perimeter minimizing set. As a consequence, we obtain oscillation estimates and a Half Space Theorem for minimal hypersurfaces in products $M \times \mathbb{R}$, where $M$ is a parabolic smooth manifold (possibly weighted and with boundary), satisfying a Ricci curvature lower bound. On the way of proving the Half Space Property, we also extend to the RCD setting some classical results on Green's functions and parabolic manifolds.

Cheng's eigenvalue comparison on metric measure spaces and applications

Using the localization technique, we prove a sharp upper bound on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of metric balls in essentially non-branching $\mathsf{CD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces. This extends a celebrated result of Cheng to the non-smooth setting of metric measure spaces satisfying Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense, via optimal transport. Rigidity and stability statements are provided for $\mathsf{RCD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces; the stability seems to be new even for smooth Riemannian manifolds. We then present some mathematical and physical applications: in the former, we obtain an upper bound on the $j^{th}$ Neumann eigenvalue in essentially non-branching $\mathsf{CD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces and a bound on the essential spectrum in non-compact $\mathsf{RCD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces; in the latter, the eigenvalue bounds correspond to general upper bounds on the masses of the spin-2 Kaluza-Klein excitations around general warped compactifications of higher-dimensional theories of gravity.

Optimal transport on null hypersurfaces and the null energy condition

The goal of the present work is to study optimal transport on null hypersurfaces inside Lorentzian manifolds. The challenge here is that optimal transport along a null hypersurface is completely degenerate, as the cost takes only the two values $0$ and $+\infty$. The tools developed in the manuscript enable to give an optimal transport characterization of the null energy condition (namely, non-negative Ricci curvature in the null directions) for Lorentzian manifolds in terms of convexity properties of the Boltzmann--Shannon entropy along null-geodesics of probability measures. We obtain as applications: a stability result under convergence of spacetimes, a comparison result for null-cones, and the Hawking area theorem (both in sharp form, for possibly weighted measures, and with apparently new rigidity statements).

On the rectifiability of $\mathsf{CD}(K,N)$ and $\mathsf{MCP}(K,N)$ spaces with unique tangents

We prove rectifiability results for $\mathsf{CD}(K,N)$ and $\mathsf{MCP}(K,N)$ metric measure spaces $(\mathsf{X},\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ with pointwise Ahlfors regular reference measure $\mathfrak{m}$ and with $\mathfrak{m}$-almost everywhere unique metric tangents. In particular, we show rectifiability if (i) $(\mathsf{X},\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ is $\mathsf{CD}(K,N)$ for an arbitrary $N$ and has Hausdorff dimension $n<5$, or (ii) $(\mathsf{X},\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ is $\mathsf{MCP}(K,N)$ and non-collapsed, namely it has Hausdorff dimension $N$. Our strategy is based on the failure of the $\mathsf{CD}$ condition in sub-Finsler Carnot groups, on a new result on the failure of the non-collapsed $\mathsf{MCP}$ on sub-Finsler Carnot groups, and on the recent breakthrough by Bate [Invent. Math., 230(3):995-1070, 2022].

Gap phenomena under curvature restrictions

In the paper we discuss gap phenomena of three different types related to Ricci (and sectional) curvature. The first type is about spectral gaps. The second type is about sharp gap metric-rigidity, originally due to Anderson. The third is about sharp gap topological-rigidity. We also propose open problems along these directions.

Monotonicity formula and stratification of the singular set of perimeter minimizers in RCD spaces

The goal of this paper is to establish a monotonicity formula for perimeter minimizing sets in RCD(0,N) metric measure cones, together with the associated rigidity statement. The applications include sharp Hausdorff dimension estimates for the singular strata of perimeter minimizing sets in non collapsed RCD spaces and the existence of blow-down cones for global perimeter minimizers in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth.

A sharp isoperimetric-type inequality for Lorentzian spaces satisfying timelike Ricci lower bounds

The paper establishes a sharp and rigid isoperimetric-type inequality in Lorentzian signature under the assumption of Ricci curvature bounded below in the timelike directions. The inequality is proved in the high generality of Lorentzian pre-length spaces satisfying timelike Ricci lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transport, the so-called $\mathsf{TCD}^e_p(K,N)$ spaces. The results are new already for smooth Lorentzian manifolds. Applications include an upper bound on the area of achronal hypersurfaces inside the interior of a black hole (original already in Schwarzschild) and an upper bound on the area of achronal hypersurfaces in cosmological spacetimes.

Poincaré inequality for one forms on four manifolds with bounded Ricci curvature

In this short note, we provide a quantitative global Poincaré inequality for one forms on a closed Riemannian four manifold, in terms of an upper bound on the diameter, a positive lower bound on the volume, and a two-sided bound on Ricci curvature. This seems to be the first non-trivial result giving such an inequality without any higher curvature assumptions. The proof is based on a Hodge theoretic result on orbifolds, a comparison for fundamental groups, and a spectral convergence with respect to Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, via a degeneration result to orbifolds by Anderson.

Principal frequency of clamped plates on RCD(0,N) spaces: sharpness, rigidity and stability

We study fine properties of the principal frequency of clamped plates in the (possibly singular) setting of metric measure spaces verifying the RCD(0,N) condition, i.e., infinitesimally Hilbertian spaces with non-negative Ricci curvature and dimension bounded above by N>1 in the synthetic sense. The initial conjecture -- an isoperimetric inequality for the principal frequency of clamped plates -- has been formulated in 1877 by Lord Rayleigh in the Euclidean case and solved affirmatively in dimensions 2 and 3 by Ashbaugh and Benguria [Duke Math. J., 1995] and Nadirashvili [Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., 1995]. The main contribution of the present work is a new isoperimetric inequality for the principal frequency of clamped plates in RCD(0,N) spaces whenever N is close enough to 2 or 3. The inequality contains the so-called ``asymptotic volume ratio", and turns out to be sharp under the subharmonicity of the distance function, a condition satisfied in metric measure cones. In addition, rigidity (i.e., equality in the isoperimetric inequality) and stability results are established in terms of the cone structure of the RCD(0,N) space as well as the shape of the eigenfunction for the principal frequency, given by means of Bessel functions. These results are new even for Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature. We discuss examples of both smooth and non-smooth spaces where the results can be applied.
