Semilinear wave equations in homothetic hyperboloidal coordinates and tail decay

Late-time wave tails decay at different rates along future null infinity and along timelike worldlines at finite radius. A compactified numerical evolution must represent both the slower decay at null infinity and the faster interior decay, producing an increasingly sharp transition between the two regimes. We address this difficulty for semilinear wave equations in Minkowski spacetime using homothetic hyperboloidal coordinates adapted to the scaling structure of the tail. In these coordinates, the tail approaches a smooth radial profile with the same decay rate at every compactified radius. The formulation therefore avoids the steepening of the radial profile seen in stationary hyperboloidal evolutions, and it reaches late times in a number of steps that grows only logarithmically with retarded time. We demonstrate this approach using pseudospectral simulations in 3+1 dimensions and reproduce the generic decay rates conjectured by Rinne. We also provide numerical evidence consistent with a nongeneric codimension-one cancellation of the leading tail coefficient at null infinity, resulting in a faster decay rate.

Solutions of the constraints with controlled decay to Kerr, including Schwartz decay

We show that to every small and decaying solution of the linearized constraint equations about Minkowski spacetime, one can add a quadratically small correction to obtain a solution of the full constraint equations. Near spacelike infinity, the correction is given by Kerr black hole initial data, up to a term that decays faster than the linearized solution, and that has Schwartz decay if the linearized solution has Schwartz decay. Using a recent result, we obtain that the solutions of the Einstein equations with these initial data admit a regular conformal compactification along null and timelike infinity. The construction is based on a right inverse (up to necessary integrability conditions) for the linearized constraint operator about Minkowski initial data obtained previously, that has optimal mapping properties relative to weighted b-Sobolev spaces, where the weights measure decay towards infinity. On an algebraic level, we show that the constraint equations can be derived using the homotopy transfer theorem, rather than using the geometric Gauss and Codazzi equations.

Perturbations of Minkowski spacetime with regular conformal compactification

We construct perturbations of Minkowski spacetime in general relativity, when given initial data that decays inverse polynomially to initial data of a Kerr spacetime towards spacelike infinity. We show that the perturbations admit a regular conformal compactification at null and timelike infinity, where the degree of regularity increases linearly with the rate of decay of the initial data to Kerr initial data. In particular, the compactification is smooth if the initial data decays rapidly to Kerr initial data. This generalizes results of Friedrich, who constructed spacetimes with a smooth conformal compactification in the case when the initial data is identical to Kerr initial data on the complement of a compact set. Our results rely on a novel formulation of the Einstein equations about Minkowski spacetime introduced by the author, that allows one to formulate the dynamic problem as a quasilinear, symmetric hyperbolic PDE that is regular at null infinity and with null infinity being at a fixed locus. It is not regular at spacelike infinity, due to the asymptotics of Kerr. Thus the main technical task is the construction of solutions near spacelike infinity, using tailored energy estimates. To accomplish this, we organize the equations according to homogeneity with respect to scaling about spacelike infinity, which identifies terms that are leading, respectively lower order, near spacelike infinity, with contributions from Kerr being lower order.

A Bogovskiǐ-type operator for Corvino-Schoen hyperbolic gluing

We construct a solution operator for the linearized constant scalar curvature equation at hyperbolic space in space dimension larger than or equal to two. The solution operator has good support propagation properties and gains two derivatives relative to standard norms. It can be used for Corvino-Schoen-type hyperbolic gluing, partly extending the recently introduced Mao-Oh-Tao gluing method to the hyperbolic setting.

A support preserving homotopy for the de Rham complex with boundary decay estimates

We study the de Rham complex of relative differential forms on compact manifolds with boundary. Chain homotopies for this complex are highly non-unique, and different homotopies can have different analytic properties, particularly near the boundary. We construct a chain homotopy that has desirable support propagation properties, and that satisfies estimates relative to weighted Sobolev norms, where the weights measure decay at the boundary. The estimates are optimal given the homogeneity properties of the de Rham differential under boundary dilation, and are obtained by showing that the homotopy is a b-pseudodifferential operator. As a corollary we obtain a right inverse of the divergence operator on Euclidean space that preserves support on large balls around the origin, and satisfies estimates that measure decay at infinity. Such a support preserving right inverse was constructed before by Bogovskii, but its mapping properties are not optimal with respect to decay. As a further corollary, in three dimensions we obtain a right inverse of the divergence operator on symmetric traceless matrices, and therefore of the linearized constraint operator of general relativity about flat space.

Scattering amplitude annihilators

Several second order differential operators are shown to annihilate the YM and GR tree scattering amplitudes. In particular we prove a conjecture of Loebbert, Mojaza and Plefka from their investigation of a hidden conformal symmetry in GR.

Semiglobal non-oscillatory big bang singular spacetimes for the Einstein-scalar field system

We construct semiglobal singular spacetimes for the Einstein equations coupled to a massless scalar field. Consistent with the heuristic analysis of Belinskii, Khalatnikov, Lifshitz or BKL for this system, there are no oscillations due to the scalar field. (This is much simpler than the oscillatory BKL heuristics for the Einstein vacuum equations.) Prior results are due to Andersson and Rendall in the real analytic case, and Rodnianski and Speck in the smooth near-spatially-flat-FLRW case. Similar to Andersson and Rendall we give asymptotic data at the singularity, which we refer to as final data, but our construction is not limited to real analytic solutions. This paper is a test application of tools (a graded Lie algebra formulation of the Einstein equations and a filtration) intended for the more subtle vacuum case. We use homological algebra tools to construct a formal series solution, then symmetric hyperbolic energy estimates to construct a true solution well-approximated by truncations of the formal one. We conjecture that the image of the map from final data to initial data is an open set of anisotropic initial data.

Scattering amplitudes in YM and GR as minimal model brackets and their recursive characterization

Attached to both Yang-Mills and General Relativity about Minkowski spacetime are distinguished gauge independent objects known as the on-shell tree scattering amplitudes. We reinterpret and rigorously construct them as $L_\infty$ minimal model brackets. This is based on formulating YM and GR as differential graded Lie algebras. Their minimal model brackets are then given by a sum of trivalent (cubic) Feynman tree graphs. The amplitudes are gauge independent when all internal lines are off-shell, not merely up to $L_\infty$ isomorphism, and we include a homological algebra proof of this fact. Using the homological perturbation lemma, we construct homotopies (propagators) that are optimal in bringing out the factorization of the residues of the amplitudes. Using a variant of Hartogs extension for singular varieties, we give a rigorous account of a recursive characterization of the amplitudes via their residues independent of their original definition in terms of Feynman graphs (this does neither involve so-called BCFW shifts nor conditions at infinity under such shifts). Roughly, the amplitude with $N$ legs is the unique section of a sheaf on a variety of $N$ complex momenta whose residues along a finite list of irreducible codimension one subvarieties (prime divisors) factor into amplitudes with less than $N$ legs. The sheaf is a direct sum of rank one sheaves labeled by helicity signs. To emphasize that amplitudes are robust objects, we give a succinct list of properties that suffice for a dgLa so as to produce the YM and GR amplitudes respectively.
