Multi-marginal optimal transport on the Heisenberg group

We consider the multi-marginal optimal transport of aligning several compactly supported marginals on the Heisenberg group to minimize the total cost, which we take to be the sum of the squared Carnot-Carathéodory distances from the marginal points to their barycenter. Under certain technical hypotheses, we prove existence and uniqueness of optimal maps. We also point out several related open questions.

Universal differentiability sets and maximal directional derivatives in Carnot groups

We show that every Carnot group G of step 2 admits a Hausdorff dimension one `universal differentiability set' N such that every real-valued Lipschitz map on G is Pansu differentiable at some point of N. This relies on the fact that existence of a maximal directional derivative of f at a point x implies Pansu differentiability at the same point x. We show that such an implication holds in Carnot groups of step 2 but fails in the Engel group which has step 3.

Local minimizers and Gamma-convergence for nonlocal perimeters in Carnot Groups

We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $Γ$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.

Planar incidences and geometric inequalities in the Heisenberg group

We prove that if $P,\mathcal{L}$ are finite sets of $δ$-separated points and lines in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$, the number of $δ$-incidences between $P$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is no larger than a constant times $$|P|^{2/3}|\mathcal{L}|^{2/3} \cdot δ^{-1/3}.$$ We apply the bound to obtain the following variant of the Loomis-Whitney inequality in the Heisenberg group: $$ |K| \lesssim |π_{x}(K)|^{2/3} \cdot |π_{y}(K)|^{2/3}, \qquad K \subset \mathbb{H}. $$ Here $π_{x}$ and $π_{y}$ are the vertical projections to the $xt$- and $yt$-planes, respectively, and $|\cdot|$ refers to natural Haar measure on either $\mathbb{H}$, or one of the planes. Finally, as a corollary of the Loomis-Whitney inequality, we deduce that $$ \|f\|_{4/3} \lesssim \sqrt{\|Xf\| \|Yf\| }, \qquad f \in BV(\mathbb{H}), $$ where $X,Y$ are the standard horizontal vector fields in $\mathbb{H}$. This is a sharper version of the classical geometric Sobolev inequality $\|f\|_{4/3} \lesssim \|\nabla_{\mathbb{H}}f\|$ for $f \in BV(\mathbb{H})$.

Universal Differentiability Sets in Carnot Groups of Arbitrarily High Step

We show that every model filiform group $\mathbb{E}_{n}$ contains a measure zero set $N$ such that every Lipschitz map $f\colon \mathbb{E}_{n}\to \mathbb{R}$ is differentiable at some point of $N$. Model filiform groups are a class of Carnot groups which can have arbitrarily high step. Essential to our work is the question of whether existence of an (almost) maximal directional derivative $Ef(x)$ in a Carnot group implies differentiability of a Lipschitz map $f$ at $x$. We show that such an implication is valid in model Filiform groups except for a one-dimensional subspace of horizontal directions. Conversely, we show that this implication fails for every horizontal direction in the free Carnot group of step three and rank two.

Porosity and Differentiability of Lipschitz Maps from Stratified Groups to Banach Homogeneous Groups

Let $f$ be a Lipschitz map from a subset $A$ of a stratified group to a Banach homogeneous group. We show that directional derivatives of $f$ act as homogeneous homomorphisms at density points of $A$ outside a $σ$-porous set. At density points of $A$ we establish a pointwise characterization of differentiability in terms of directional derivatives. We use these new results to obtain an alternate proof of almost everywhere differentiability of Lipschitz maps from subsets of stratified groups to Banach homogeneous groups satisfying a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. As a consequence we also get an alternative proof of Pansu's Theorem.

A $C^m$ Whitney Extension Theorem for Horizontal Curves in the Heisenberg Group

We characterize those mappings from a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$ into the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ which can be extended to a $C^{m}$ horizontal curve in $\mathbb{H}^{n}$. The characterization combines the classical Whitney conditions with an estimate comparing changes in the vertical coordinate with those predicted by the Taylor series of the horizontal coordinates.

Geometric aspects of p-capacitary potentials

We provide monotonicity formulas for solutions to the p-Laplace equation defined in the exterior of a convex domain. A number of analytic and geometric consequences are derived, including the classical Minkowski inequality as well as new characterizations of rotationally symmetric solutions and domains. The proofs rely on the conformal splitting technique introduced by the second author in collaboration with V. Agostiniani.

Rigidity results for elliptic boundary value problems: stable solutions for quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions

We provide a general approach to the classification results of stable solutions of (possibly nonlinear) elliptic problems with Robin conditions. The method is based on a geometric formula of Poincaré type, which is inspired by a classical work of Sternberg and Zumbrun and which gives an accurate description of the curvatures of the level sets of the stable solutions. {F}rom this, we show that the stable solutions of a quasilinear problem with Neumann data are necessarily constant. As a byproduct of this, we obtain an alternative proof of a celebrated result of Casten and Holland, and Matano. In addition, we will obtain as a consequence a new proof of a result recently established by Bandle, Mastrolia, Monticelli and Punzo.

Rigidity results in Diffusion Markov Triples

We consider stable solutions of semilinear equations in a very general setting. The equation is set on a Polish topological space endowed with a measure and the linear operator is induced by a carré du champs (equivalently, the equation is set in a diffusion Markov triple). Under suitable curvature dimension conditions, we establish that stable solutions with integrable carré du champs are necessarily constant (weaker conditions characterize the structure of the carré du champs and carré du champ itéré). The proofs are based on a geometric Poincaré formula in this setting. From the general theorems established, several previous results are obtained as particular cases and new ones are provided as well.

Classification of stable solutions for boundary value problems with nonlinear boundary conditions on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature

We present a geometric formula of Poincaré type, which is inspired by a classical work of Sternberg and Zumbrun, and we provide a classification result of stable solutions of linear elliptic problems with nonlinear Robin conditions on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. The result obtained here is a refinement of a result recently established by Bandle, Mastrolia, Monticelli and Punzo.

Structure of Porous Sets in Carnot Groups

We show that any Carnot group contains a closed nowhere dense set which has measure zero but is not $σ$-porous with respect to the Carnot-Carathéodory (CC) distance. In the first Heisenberg group we observe that there exist sets which are porous with respect to the CC distance but not the Euclidean distance and vice-versa. In Carnot groups we then construct a Lipschitz function which is Pansu differentiable at no point of a given $σ$-porous set and show preimages of open sets under the horizontal gradient are far from being porous.
