Charged black-hole binary radiation at second post-Newtonian order

In this work, we build on Ref.~[Phys.~Rev.~D 112, 124060 (2025)], where we derived the dynamics of an electrically charged binary system at second post-Newtonian (2PN) order, by extending the analysis, at the same PN accuracy, to the associated emission of electromagnetic and gravitational radiation. We focus on non-spinning binaries that evolve quasi-adiabatically along a sequence of circular orbits, and compute the 2PN expression for the corresponding total energy flux at infinity. With respect to the well-known case of a neutral binary, the presence of charge induces both a new leading-order electromagnetic contribution of dipolar nature and additional charge-dependent corrections in the gravitational sector. To account for this richer phenomenology, we extend both the PN-matched multipolar post-Minkowskian and the effective field theory approaches to the radiation sector of charged binaries, with exact agreement for the contributions computed independently in both formalisms. We derive the radiative symmetric-trace-free multipole moments of the vector and gravitational fields at 2PN order. In doing so, we also compute 2PN-accurate charge-dependent corrections to the spherical multipoles of the waveform emitted by the binary, including a new memory contribution sourced by the stress-energy tensor of the electromagnetic radiation. These results lay the foundation for developing accurate waveform models capable of assessing the observational signatures of electric charge in gravitational-wave signals.

One-cycle radiation-reaction Magnusian for eccentric binaries through relative 1PN order

We derive the one-cycle first Magnusian for nonspinning compact binaries on planar, bound eccentric orbits through relative first post-Newtonian (1PN) order and linear order in radiation reaction, and construct the associated first-order periastron return map. Combining the conservative 1PN dynamics and its Jacobi transport with the 2.5PN and 3.5PN radiation-reaction forces, we obtain all four components in closed form for \(0<e<1\), without expanding in eccentricity. The dependence on all eight Iyer--Will radiation-reaction gauge parameters reduces to periodic coboundaries and therefore cancels over a radial cycle. The result reproduces the averaged energy and angular-momentum losses, their circular limit, and the secular evolution of the 1PN radial orbital elements. The two remaining components encode the dissipative angle-sector information. Projecting the resulting phase-space update onto the perturbed periastron return section yields the corrections to the return time and apsidal phase. We then compare the strict first-order map with a partially exponentiated map built from the same Magnusian. The comparison is observable dependent: at fixed periastron index, the strict map gives smaller residuals for a representative evolution over 40 radial cycles, whereas partial exponentiation reduces the accumulated periastron-timing residual by about an order of magnitude. Across a representative one-cycle grid at equal masses, partial exponentiation improves the radial-action and energy updates at every sampled point.

High-order effective-one-body tidal interactions and gravitational scattering

Using state-of-the-art scattering results in post-Minkowskian (PM) gravity, we improve the tidal sector of four different flavors of the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism. We notably explore both adiabatic and post-adiabatic gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic quadrupolar tidal effects at the next-to-next-to-leading PM-order. When comparing the predictions of the so-constructed Lagrange-PM-tidal version of EOB to recent numerical-relativity data on the scattering of neutron stars, we find improved agreement with respect to existing EOB models and PM expansions. Our work lays the foundation for the development of an accurate tidal sector of the PM EOB models, and points out the need to explore improved resummation schemes in PN EOB for bound and circularized orbits.

Exploring the gauge flexibility of the linear-in-spin effective-one-body Hamiltonian at the 5.5 post-Newtonian order

We derive the gauge-general expressions of the two gyro-gravitomagnetic functions entering the spin-orbit sector of the effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian up to the fifth-and-half post-Newtonian (5.5PN) order. Our results include both local and nonlocal-in-time contributions, providing the most general analytical formulation of the linear-in-spin conservative dynamics within the EOB framework. These expressions are then employed to compute two gauge-invariant observables for quasi-circular orbits: the binding energy and the fractional periastron advance. We also use them to compare two spin-gauge choices: the well-known Damour-Jaranowski-Sch\"afer ($\rm DJS$) gauge, in which the gyro-gravitomagnetic functions are independent of the orbital angular momentum, and the alternative anti-$\rm DJS$ (or $\overline{\rm DJS}$) gauge, designed to reproduce in the test-mass limit the spin-orbit interaction of a spinning test particle in a Kerr background. For a circular, equal-mass, equal-spin binary, our analysis indicates that the $\overline{\rm DJS}$ gauge provides a slightly improved description of the inspiral dynamics, suggesting potential advantages for its use in future EOB waveform models.

Charged Black-Hole Binary Evolution at Second Post-Newtonian Order

We study the dynamics of electrically charged black-hole binaries and their gravitational-wave emission during the inspiral phase. Within the post-Newtonian framework, we derive the conservative and dissipative dynamics up to second order (2PN), combining Effective Field Theory and classical methods. We compute the NNLO conservative Lagrangian, LO dissipative effects in harmonic and Lorenz gauges, and provide the equations of motion, center-of-mass transformations, and the Lagrangian/Hamiltonian in ADM-type coordinates. We also obtain gauge-invariant expressions for the binding energy, periastron advance in quasi-circular orbits, and the scattering angle in unbound orbits. Our results extend previous analyses and are fully consistent with recent post-Minkowskian findings.

A novel Lagrange-multiplier approach to the effective-one-body dynamics of binary systems in post-Minkowskian gravity

We present a new approach to the conservative dynamics of binary systems, within the effective one-body (EOB) framework, based on the use of a Lagrange multiplier to impose the mass-shell constraint. When applied to the post-Minkowskian (PM) description of the two-body problem in Einsteinian gravity, this Lagrange-EOB (LEOB) approach allows for a new formulation of the conservative dynamics that avoids the drawbacks of the recursive definition of EOB-PM Hamiltonians. Using state-of-the-art expressions of the resummed waveform and radiation reaction, we apply our new formalism to the construction of an aligned-spin, quasi-circular, inspiraling EOB waveform model, called {\tt LEOB-PM}, that incorporates analytical information up to the 4PM level, completed by 4PN contributions up to the sixth order in eccentricity, in the orbital sector, and by 4.5PN contributions, in the spin-orbit sector. In the nonspinning case, we find that an uncalibrated LEOB-PM model delivers maximum EOB/NR unfaithfulness ${\bar{F}}_{\rm EOBNR}$ (with the Advanced LIGO noise in the total mass range $10-200M_\odot$) varying between $0.2\%$ and $1\%$ over all the nonspinning dataset of the Simulating eXtreme Spacetime (SXS) Numerical Relativity (NR) catalog up to mass ratio $q=15$. It also delivers excellent phasing agreement with the $q=32$ configuration of the RIT catalog. We also found consistency between binding energies within a few percent at the NR merger location. Then, when NR-informing the dynamics of the model (both orbital and spinning sectors) by using 17 SXS dataset, we find that the EOB/NR unfaithfulness (compared to 530 spin-aligned SXS waveforms) has a median value of $5.39\times 10^{-4}$, or $6.13\times 10^{-4}$ (depending on the spin-spin interactions), reaching at most $\sim 1\%$ in some of the high-spin corners.

Direct current memory effects in effective-one-body waveform models

The direct current (DC) memory is a non-oscillatory, hereditary component of the gravitational wave (GW) signal that represents one of the most peculiar manifestations of the nonlinear nature of GW emission and propagation. In this work, by transforming the results provided in Ebersold et al. [Phys.Rev.D 100 (2019) 8, 084043] in harmonic coordinates and quasi-Keplerian parametrization, we provide the DC memory in terms of the effective-one-body (EOB) phase-space variables, with a relative accuracy of 2.5PN and in an expansion for small eccentricity up to order six. Our results are then implemented in TEOBResumS-Dalí, thus providing the first EOB model with DC memory contributions. This model is then used to assess the impact on the waveform and the main features of the DC memory, also addressing its dependence on the eccentricity of the binary system at its formation.

Gravitational spin-orbit coupling through the third-subleading post-Newtonian order: exploring spin-gauge flexibility

We build upon recent work by Antonelli et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125 (2020) 1, 011103] to obtain, within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism, and for an arbitrary choice of gauge, the third-subleading post-Newtonian (4.5PN) corrections to the spin-orbit conservative dynamics of spin-aligned binaries. This is then specialized to: (i) the well-known Damour-Jaranowski-Schäfer ($\rm DJS$) gauge, where the dependence on the angular momentum of the gyro-gravitomagnetic functions $(G_S,G_{S_*})$ is removed and (ii) to an alternative gauge (called anti-$\rm DJS$ gauge, $\overline{\rm DJS}$) that is chosen so as to precisely reproduce the Hamiltonian of a spinning test-particle at linear order in the particle spin and keep the full dependence on the radial and angular momentum in $(G_S,G_{S_*})$. We use these results to extend by one perturbative order, in PN sense, the analytical knowledge of the periastron advance. After performing a suitable factorization and resummation of $(G_S,G_{S_*})$, the $\rm DJS$ and $\overline{\rm DJS}$ performances are compared via various gauge-invariant quantities at the EOB last stable circular orbit. We eventually find some indications that the $\overline{\rm DJS}$ gauge might be advantageous in the description of the inspiral dynamics of circularized binaries.

Faithful effective-one-body waveform of small-mass-ratio coalescing black hole binaries: the eccentric, nonspinning, case

We present a new effective-one-body (EOB) waveform for eccentric, nonspinning, binaries in the extreme mass ratio limit, with initial eccentricities up to $0.95$. The EOB analytical waveform, that includes noncircular corrections up to second post-Newtonian order, is completed by a phenomenological ringdown model that is informed by Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli (RWZ) type waveforms generated by a point-particle source. This model notably includes the beating between positive and negative frequency quasi-normal-modes (QNMs). We analyze various prescriptions to faithfully complete the analytical EOB waveform in the transition from plunge to merger. In particular, we systematically explore the effect of: (i) the generic Newtonian prefactor; (ii) next-to-quasi-circular (NQC) corrections to amplitude and phase; (iii) the point were NQC corrections are determined; (iv) the ringdown attachment point. This yields EOB/RWZ quadrupolar phase differences through merger and ringdown $\lesssim 0.01$~rad for the quasi-circular case and $\lesssim 0.05$~rad for the eccentric case. Higher modes are also modeled up to the $\ell=m=5$ multipole. We finally discuss the excitation of the QNMs and present a heuristic model to motivate it in correlation with the presence of a point-particle source.

2.5PN accurate waveform information for generic-planar-orbit binaries in effective one-body models

We provide the post-Newtonian (PN) waveform for binary systems in motion along generic planar orbits at 2.5PN accuracy, in terms of the dynamical variables of the effective one-body (EOB) formalism. In addition to the calculation of the higher order terms for all the contributions to the waveform that have been already considered in previous avatars of EOB models, we also compute the EOB expression of the oscillatory memory terms. These are purely non-circular contributions, first appearing at 1.5PN order, that have been so far neglected in the EOB literature. This should foster their inclusion in EOB models and the definitive assessment of their role in shaping gravitational wave signals at infinity. To further promote the application of our results, we also derive associated non-circular factors according to the waveform factorization prescription of the non-circular EOB model TEOBResumS-DALI; the result is a set of ready-to-use non-circular factors that can be directly implemented as extra non-circular corrections in the waveform of TEOBResumS-DALI.

New Avenue for Accurate Analytical Waveforms and Fluxes for Eccentric Compact Binaries

We introduce a new paradigm for constructing accurate analytic waveforms (and fluxes) for eccentric compact binaries. Our recipe builds on the standard Post-Newtonian (PN) approach but (i) retains implicit time-derivatives of the phase space variables in the instantaneous part of the noncircular waveform, and then (ii) suitably factorizes and resums this partly PN-implicit waveform using effective-one-body (EOB) procedures. We test our prescription against the exact results obtained by solving the Teukolsky equation with a test-mass source orbiting a Kerr black hole, and compare the use of the exact vs PN equations of motion for the time derivatives computation. Focusing only on the quadrupole contribution, we find that the use of the exact equations of motion yields an analytical/numerical agreement of the (averaged) angular momentum fluxes that is improved by $40\%$ with respect to previous work, with $4.5\%$ fractional difference for eccentricity $e=0.9$ and black hole dimensionless spin $-0.9\leq \hat{a}\leq +0.9$. We also find a remarkable convergence trend between Newtonian, 1PN and 2PN results. Our approach carries over to the comparable mass case using the resummed EOB equations of motion and paves the way to faithful EOB-based waveform model for long-inspiral eccentric binaries for current and future gravitational wave detectors.

Blandford--Znajek monopole expansion revisited: novel non-analytic contributions to the power emission

The Blandford and Znajek (BZ) split-monopole serves as an important theoretical example of the mechanism that can drive the electromagnetic extraction of energy from Kerr black holes. It is constructed as a perturbative low spin solution of Force Free Electrodynamics (FFE). Recently, Armas $et~al.$ put this construction on a firmer footing by clearing up issues with apparent divergent asymptotics. This was accomplished by resolving the behavior around the outer light surface, a critical surface of the FFE equations. Building on this, we revisit the BZ perturbative expansion, and extend the perturbative approach to higher orders in the spin parameter of the Kerr black hole. We employ matched-asymptotic-expansions and semi-analytic techniques to extend the split-monopole solution to the sixth-order in perturbation theory. The expansion necessarily includes novel logarithmic contributions in the spin parameter. We show that these higher order terms result in non-analytic contributions to the power and angular momentum output. In particular, we compute for the first time the perturbative contributions to the energy extraction at seventh- and eighth-order in the spin parameter. The resulting formula for the energy extraction improves the agreement with numerical simulations at finite spin. Moreover, we present a novel numerical procedure for resolving the FFE equations across the outer light surface, resulting in significantly faster convergence and greater accuracy, and extend this to higher orders as well. Finally, we include a general discussion of light surfaces as critical surfaces of the FFE equations.

Assessment of Effective-One-Body Radiation Reactions for Generic Planar Orbits

In this paper we assess the performances of different analytical prescriptions for the effective-one-body (EOB) radiation reaction along generic planar orbits using exact numerical result in the test-mass limit. We consider three prescriptions put forward in the recent literature: (i) the quasicircular prescription (QC), (ii) the QC with second post-Newtonian (2PN) order noncircular corrections (QC2PN), and (iii) the QC corrected by the noncircular Newtonian prefactor (NCN). The analytical fluxes are then compared against the exact fluxes that are computed by solving the Teukolsky equation with a test-mass source in geodesic motion. We find that the NCN prescription is the most accurate for both eccentric and hyperbolic orbits and it is in robust agreement also for large values of the eccentricity. This result carries over to the comparable masses, as we discuss for a numerical-relativity (NR) case study. We also demonstrate that, while the EOB/NR waveform unfaithfulness is a necessary check for the precision of EOB models, the direct comparison of EOB/NR fluxes is a more stringent and informative test to select the best prescription. Finally, we propose an improved radiation reaction, NCN2PN, that includes noncircular 2PN corrections, in resummed form, as a further multiplicative contribution and that is valid for any mass ratio.

Exploiting Newton-factorized, 2PN-accurate, waveform multipoles in effective-one-body models for spin-aligned noncircularized binaries

We present a new approach to factorize and resum the post-Newtonian (PN) waveform for generic equatorial motion to be used within effective-one-body (EOB) based waveform models. The new multipolar waveform factorization improves previous prescriptions in that: (i) the generic Newtonian contribution is factored out from each multipole; (ii) the circular part is factored out and resummed using standard EOB methods and (iii) the residual, 2PN-accurate, noncircular part, and in particular the tail contribution, is additionally resummed using Padé approximants. The resulting waveform is validated in the extreme-mass-ratio limit by comparisons with nine (mostly nonspinning) numerical waveforms either from eccentric inspirals, with eccentricities up to $e=0.9$, or dynamical captures . The resummation of the noncircular tail contribution is found essential to obtain excellent (${\lesssim}0.05$~rad at periastron for $e=0.9$) analytical/numerical agreement and to considerably improve the prescription with just the Newtonian prefactor. In the comparable mass case, the new 2PN waveform shows only a marginal improvement over the previous Newtonian factorization, though yielding maximal unfaithfulness $\simeq 10^{-3}$ with the 28 publicly available numerical relativity simulations with eccentricity up to $\sim 0.3$ (except for a single outlier that grazes $10^{-2}$). We finally use test-particle data to validate the waveform factorization proposed by Khalil et al.~[Phys.~Rev.~104 (2021) 2, 024046] and conclude that its amplitude can be considered reliable (though less accurate, $\sim 6\%$ fractional difference versus $1.5\%$ of our method) only up to eccentricities $\sim 0.3$.

Fixing the non-relativistic expansion of the 1PM potential

We obtain a first order post-Minkowskian two-body effective potential whose post-Newtonian expansion directly reproduces the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann potential. Post-Minkowskian potentials can be extracted from on-shell scattering amplitudes in a quantum field theory of scalar matter coupled to gravity. Previously, such potentials did not reproduce the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann potential without employing a suitable canonical transformation. In this work, we resolve this issue by obtaining a new expression for the first-order post-Minkowskian potential. This is accomplished by exploiting the reference frame dependence that arises in the scattering amplitude computation. Finally, as a check on our result, we demonstrate that our new potential gives the correct scattering angle.
