Diffuse Interface Model for Two-Phase Flows on Evolving Surfaces with Different Densities: Global Well-Posedness

We show existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard type system on a given two-dimensional evolving surface in the case of different densities and a singular (logarithmic) potential. The system describes a diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of viscous incompressible fluids on an evolving surface. We also establish the validity of the instantaneous strict separation property from the pure phases. To show these results we use our previous achievements on local well-posedness together with suitable novel regularity results for the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. The latter allows to obtain higher-order energy estimates to extend the local solution globally in time. To this aim the time evolution of energy type quantities has to be calculated and estimated carefully.

Nonlocal-to-local convergence rates for strong solutions to a Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard system with singular potential

The main goal of this paper is to establish the nonlocal-to-local convergence of strong solutions to a Navier--Stokes--Cahn--Hilliard model with singular potential describing immiscible, viscous two-phase flows with matched densities, which is referred to as the Model H. This means that we show that the strong solutions to the nonlocal Model H converge to the strong solution to the local Model H as the weight function in the nonlocal interaction kernel approaches the delta distribution. Compared to previous results in the literature, our main novelty is to further establish corresponding convergence rates. Before investigating the nonlocal-to-local convergence, we first need to ensure the strong well-posedness of the nonlocal Model H. In two dimensions, this result can already be found in the literature, whereas in three dimensions, it will be shown in the present paper. Moreover, in both two and three dimensions, we establish suitable uniform bounds on the strong solutions of the nonlocal Model H, which are essential to prove the nonlocal-to-local convergence results.

Regularity results and optimal velocity control of the convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation in 3D

In this contribution, we study an optimal control problem for the celebrated nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation endowed with the singular Flory-Huggins potential in the three-dimensional setting. The control enters the governing state system in a nonlinear fashion in the form of a prescribed solenoidal, that is a divergence-free, vector field, whereas the cost functional to be minimized is of tracking-type. The novelties of the present paper are twofold: in addition to the control application, the intrinsic difficulties of the optimization problem forced us to first establish new regularity results on the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation that were unknown even without the coupling with a velocity field and are therefore of independent interest. This happens to be shown using the recently proved separation property along with ad hoc Hölder regularities and a bootstrap method. For the control problem, the existence of an optimal strategy as well as first-order necessary conditions are then established.

Structure-preserving neural networks in data-driven rheological models

In this paper we address the importance and the impact of employing structure preserving neural networks as surrogate of the analytical physics-based models typically employed to describe the rheology of non-Newtonian fluids in Stokes flows. In particular, we propose and test on real-world scenarios a novel strategy to build data-driven rheological models based on the use of Input-Output Convex Neural Networks (ICNNs), a special class of feedforward neural network scalar valued functions that are convex with respect to their inputs. Moreover, we show, through a detailed campaign of numerical experiments, that the use of ICNNs is of paramount importance to guarantee the well-posedness of the associated non-Newtonian Stokes differential problem. Finally, building upon a novel perturbation result for non-Newtonian Stokes problems, we study the impact of our data-driven ICNN based rheological model on the accuracy of the finite element approximation.

Mathematical Analysis of a Diffuse Interface Model for Multi-Phase Flows of Incompressible Viscous Fluids with Different Densities

We analyze a diffuse interface model for multi-phase flows of $N$ incompressible, viscous Newtonian fluids with different densities. In the case of a bounded and sufficiently smooth domain existence of weak solutions in two and three space dimensions and a singular free energy density is shown. Moreover, in two space dimensions global existence for sufficiently regular initial data is proven. In three space dimension, existence of strong solutions locally in time is shown as well as regularization for large times in the absence of exterior forces. Moreover, in both two and three dimensions, convergence to stationary solutions as time tends to infinity is proved.

Multi-component conserved Allen-Cahn equations

We consider a multi-component version of the conserved Allen-Cahn equation proposed by J. Rubinstein and P. Sternberg in 1992 as an alternative model for phase separation. In our case, the free energy is characterized by a mixing entropy density which belongs to a large class of physically relevant entropies like, e.g., the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy. We establish the well-posedness of the Cauchy-Neumann problem with respect to a natural notion of (finite) energy solution which is more regular under appropriate assumptions and is strictly separated from pure phases if the initial datum is. We then prove that the energy solution becomes more regular and strictly separated instantaneously. Also, we show that any finite energy solution converges to a unique equilibrium. The validity of a dissipative inequality (identity for strong solutions) allows us to analyze the problem within the theory of infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems. On account of the obtained results, we can associate to our problem a dissipative dynamical system and we can prove that it has a global attractor as well as an exponential attractor.

The 3D strict separation property for the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular potential

We consider the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular (logarithmic) potential and constant mobility in three-dimensional bounded domains and we establish the validity of the instantaneous strict separation property. This means that any weak solution, which is not a pure phase initially, stays uniformly away from the pure phases $\pm1$ from any positive time on. This work extends the result in dimension two for the same equation and gives a positive answer to the long standing open problem of the validity of the strict separation property in dimensions higher than two. In conclusion, we show how this property plays an essential role to achieve higher-order regularity for the solutions and to prove that any weak solution converges to a single equilibrium.

Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility: Incompressible limit and convergence to stationary states

The link between compressible models of tissue growth and the Hele-Shaw free boundary problem of fluid mechanics has recently attracted a lot of attention. In most of these models, only repulsive forces and advection terms are taken into account. In order to take into account long range interactions, we include for the first time a surface tension effect by adding a nonlocal term which leads to the degenerate nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation, and study the incompressible limit of the system. The degeneracy and the source term are the main difficulties. Our approach relies on a new L^infty estimate obtained by De Giorgi iterations and on a uniform control of the energy despite the source term. We also prove the long-term convergence to a single constant stationary state of any weak solution using entropy methods, even when a source term is present. Our result shows that the surface tension in the nonlocal (and even local) Cahn-Hilliard equation will not prevent the tumor from completely invading the domain.

A phase-field system arising from multiscale modeling of thrombus biomechanics in blood vessels: local well-posedness in dimension two

We consider a phase-field model which describes the interactions between the blood flow and the thrombus. The latter is supposed to be a viscoelastic material. The potential describing the cohesive energy of the mixture is assumed to be of Flory-Huggins type (i.e. logarithmic). This ensures the boundedness from below of the dissipation energy. In the two dimensional case, we prove the local (in time) existence and uniqueness of a strong solution, provided that the two viscosities of the pure fluid phases are close enough. We also show that the order parameter remains strictly separated from the pure phases if it is so at the initial time.

Regularisation and separation for evolving surface Cahn-Hilliard equations

We consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation with constant mobility and logarithmic potential on a two-dimensional evolving closed surface embedded in $\mathbb R^3$, as well as a related weighted model. The well-posedness of weak solutions for the corresponding initial value problems on a given time interval $[0,T]$ have already been established by the first two authors. Here we first prove some regularisation properties of weak solutions in finite time. Then, we show the validity of the strict separation property for both the problems. This means that the solutions stay uniformly away from the pure phases $\pm1$ from any positive time on. This property plays an essential role to achieve higher-order regularity for the solutions. Also, it is a rigorous validation of the standard double-well approximation. The present results are a twofold extension of the well-known ones for the classical equation in planar domains.

Global well-posedness and convergence to equilibrium for the Abels-Garcke-Grün model with nonlocal free energy

We investigate the nonlocal version of the Abels-Garcke-Grün (AGG) system, which describes the motion of a mixture of two viscous incompressible fluids. This consists of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard system characterized by concentration-dependent density and viscosity, and an additional flux term due to interface diffusion. In particular, the Cahn-Hilliard dynamics of the concentration (phase-field) is governed by the aggregation/diffusion competition of the nonlocal Helmholtz free energy with singular (logarithmic) potential and constant mobility. We first prove the existence of global strong solutions in general two-dimensional bounded domains and their uniqueness when the initial datum is strictly separated from the pure phases. The key points are a novel well-posedness result of strong solutions to the nonlocal convective Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular potential and constant mobility under minimal integral assumption on the incompressible velocity field, and a new two-dimensional interpolation estimate for the $L^4(Ω)$ control of the pressure in the stationary Stokes problem. Secondly, we show that any weak solution, whose existence was already known, is globally defined, enjoys the propagation of regularity and converges towards an equilibrium (i.e., a stationary solution) as $t\rightarrow \infty$. Furthermore, we demonstrate the uniqueness of strong solutions and their continuous dependence with respect to general (not necessarily separated) initial data in the case of matched densities and unmatched viscosities (i.e., the nonlocal model H with variable viscosity, singular potential and constant mobility). Finally, we provide a stability estimate between the strong solutions to the nonlocal AGG model and the nonlocal Model H in terms of the difference of densities.
