Geometry of Entanglement

In the context of the surface-state correspondence we propose the geodesic curvature of a convex curve as a local measure of factorization of the dual CFT state. Its integral will be interpreted as computing the bipartite entanglement among degrees of freedom with support on the chosen domain. We will derive results through application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and show quantitative agreement with computations using the MERA tensor network and the formalism of entanglement density.

A geodesic Witten diagram description of holographic entanglement entropy and its quantum corrections

We use the formalism of geodesic Witten diagrams to study the holographic realization of the conformal block expansion for entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals. The agreement between the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and the identity block contribution has a dual realization as the product of bulk to boundary propagators. Quantum bulk corrections instead arise from stripped higher order diagrams and back-reaction effects; these are also mapped to the structure for $G_N^0$ terms found in \cite{Faulkner:2013ana}, with the former identified as the bulk entanglement entropy across the Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces. An independent derivation of this last statement is provided by implementing a twist-line formalism in the bulk, and additional checks from the computation of mutual information and single interval entanglement entropy. Finally an interesting correspondence is found between the recently proposed holographic entanglement of purification, and an approximated form for certain $1/c$ Renyi entropies corrections.

Circuit Complexity of Knot States in Chern-Simons theory

We compute an upper bound on the circuit complexity of quantum states in $3d$ Chern-Simons theory corresponding to certain classes of knots. Specifically, we deal with states in the torus Hilbert space of Chern-Simons that are the knot complements on the $3$-sphere of arbitrary torus knots. These can be constructed from the unknot state by using the Hilbert space representation of the $S$ and $T$ modular transformations of the torus as fundamental gates. The upper bound is saturated in the semiclassical limit of Chern-Simons theory. The results are then generalized for a family of multi-component links that are obtained by "Hopf-linking" different torus knots. We also use the braid word presentation of knots to discuss states on the punctured sphere Hilbert space associated with 2-bridge knots and links. The calculations present interesting number theoretic features related with continued fraction representations of rational numbers. In particular, we show that the minimization procedure defining the complexity naturally leads to regular continued fractions, allowing a geometric interpretation of the results in the Farey tesselation of the upper-half plane. Finally, we relate our discussion to the framework of path integral optimization by generalizing the original argument to non-trivial topologies.

A perturbative expansion for entanglement entropy in string theory

We derive a perturbative expansion for space time entanglement entropy in string theory by comparing replica trick constructions on the target space and on the worldsheet. Requiring the two approaches to match implies a set of constrains on the amplitudes involved and produces a non-trivial relation among target space and world sheet entanglement. We will be mainly interested in bosonic string on a flat background but also discuss the superstring generalization.

Replica trick and string winding

We apply the replica trick to compute the entropy of a cylinder amplitude in string theory. We focus on the contribution from non-perturbative winding modes and impose tadpole cancellation to understand the correct prescription for integrating over moduli. Choosing the entangling surface to cut longitudinally over the whole length of the cylinder, we obtain an answer that is interpreted as the entropy of a density matrix. We recast this result in target space language, both in the open and closed string picture.

Strong subadditivity and holography

We study in detail the relationship between strong subadditivity for a boundary field theory and energy conditions for its bulk dual in 2+1 dimensions. We provide a discussion of known facts and new results organized from the simplest case of a static system with collinear intervals to a time dependent one in a generic configuration, with particular focus on the holographic geometric description.

A perturbative study on the analytic continuation for generalized gravitational entropy

We study the analytic continuation used by Lewkowycz and Maldacena to prove the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for entanglement entropy, which is the holographic dual of the trace of the $β$-power of the time evolution operator when $β\in \mathbb{R}$. This will be done perturbatively by using a weakly time dependent Hamiltonian, corresponding to a small shift of the dual static background. Depending on the periodicity we impose on the gravitational solution, we consider two different possibilities and compare the associated entropies with the results obtained through a minimal area computation. To our surprise we discover that, at first order, both choices correctly reproduce the associated entanglement entropy. Furthermore we find unexpected divergent contributions that we have to discard in order to fit the minimal area computation, and an additional requirement that needs to be imposed on the $β$ dependence on the metric.

Dynamics of Entanglement Entropy from Einstein Equation

We study the dynamics of entanglement entropy for weakly excited states in conformal field theories by using the AdS/CFT. This is aimed at a first step to find a counterpart of Einstein equation in the CFT language. In particular, we point out that the entanglement entropy satisfies differential equations which directly correspond to the Einstein equation in several setups of AdS/CFT. We also define a quantity called entanglement density in higher dimensional field theories and study its dynamical property for weakly excited states in conformal field theories.

On recursion relations in topological string theory

We discuss a link between the topological recursion relations derived algebraically by Witten and the holomorphic anomaly equation of Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa. This is obtained through the definition of an operator ${\cal{W}}_s$ that reproduces the recursion relations for topological string theory coupled to worldsheet gravity a la BCOV. This operator is contained inside an algebra that generalizes the tt* equations and whose direct consequence is the holomorphic anomaly equation itself.

Double genus expansion for general $Ω$ background

We will show how the refined holomorphic anomaly equation obeyed by the Nekrasov partition function at generic $ε_1,ε_2$ values becomes compatible, in a certain two parameters expansion, with the assumption that both parameters are associated to genus counting. The underlying worldsheet theory will be analysed and constrained in various ways, and we will provide both physical interpretation and some alternative evidence for this model. Finally we will use the Gopakumar - Vafa formulation for the refined topological string in order to give a more quantitative description.

Topics in Open Topological Strings

This thesis is based on some selected topics in open topological string theory which I have worked on during my Ph.D. It comprises an introductory part where I have focused on the points most needed for the later chapters, trading completeness for conciseness and clarity. Then, following [12], we discuss tadpole cancellation for topological strings where we mainly show how its implementation is needed for ensuring the same "odd" moduli decoupling encountered in the closed theory. Next we move to analyse how the open and closed effective field theories for the B model interact writing the complete Lagrangian. We first check it deriving some already known tree level amplitudes in term of target space quantities, and then we extend the recipe to new results; later we implement open closed duality from a target field theory perspective. This last subject is also analysed from a worldsheet point of view extending the analysis of [13]. Some ideas for future research are briefly reported.

Taming open/closed string duality with a Losev trick

A target space string field theory formulation for open and closed B-model is provided by giving a Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization of the holomorphic Chern-Simons theory with off-shell gravity background. The target space expression for the coefficients of the holomorphic anomaly equation for open strings are obtained. Furthermore, open/closed string duality is proved from a judicious integration over the open string fields. In particular, by restriction to the case of independence on continuous open moduli, the shift formulas of [7] are reproduced and shown therefore to encode the data of a closed string dual.

Decoupling A and B model in open string theory -- Topological adventures in the world of tadpoles

In this paper we analyze the problem of tadpole cancellation in open topological strings. We prove that the inclusion of unorientable worldsheet diagrams guarantees a consistent decoupling of A and B model for open superstring amplitudes at all genera. This is proven by direct microscopic computation in Super Conformal Field Theory. For the B-model we explicitly calculate one loop amplitudes in terms of analytic Ray-Singer torsions of appropriate vector bundles and obtain that the decoupling corresponds to the cancellation of D-brane and orientifold charges. Local tadpole cancellation on the worldsheet then guarantees the decoupling at all loops. The holomorphic anomaly equations for open topological strings at one loop are also obtained and compared with the results of the Quillen formula.
