Gauge-invariant Slavnov-Taylor Decomposition for Trilinear Vertices

We continue the analysis of the gauge-invariant decomposition of amplitudes in spontaneously broken massive gauge theories by providing a characterization of separately gauge-invariant subsectors for amplitudes involving trilinear interaction vertices for an Abelian theory with chiral fermions. We show that the use of Frohlich-Morchio-Strocchi gauge-invariant dynamical (i.e. propagating inside loops) fields yields a very powerful handle on the cancellations among unphysical degrees of freedom (the longitudinal mode of the massive gauge field, the Goldstone scalar and the ghosts). The resulting cancellations are encoded into separately Slavnov-Taylor invariant sectors for 1-PI amplitudes. The construction works to all orders in perturbation theory. This decomposition suggests a novel strategy for the determination of finite counter-terms required to restore the Slavnov-Taylor identities in chiral theories in the absence of an invariant regularization scheme.

Gauge-Invariant Quantum Fields

Gauge-invariant quantum fields are constructed in an Abelian power-counting renormalizable gauge theory with both scalar, vector and fermionic matter content. This extends previous results already obtained for the gauge-invariant description of the Higgs mode via a propagating gauge-invariant field. The renormalization of the model is studied in the Algebraic Renormalization approach. The decomposition of Slavnov-Taylor identities into separately invariant sectors is analyzed. We also comment on some non-renormalizable extensions of the model whose 1-PI Green's functions are the flows of certain differential equations of the homogeneous Euler type, exactly resumming the dependence on a certain set of dim. 6 and dim. 8 derivative operators. The latter are identified uniquely by the condition that they span the mass and kinetic terms in the gauge-invariant dynamical fields. The construction can be extended to non-Abelian gauge groups.

Decoupling Limits in Effective Field Theories via Higher Dimensional Operators

Non-decoupling effects of heavy scalars and vector fields play an important role in the indirect search of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics at the LHC. By exploiting some new differential equations for the 1-PI amplitudes, we show that such non-decoupling effects are absent for quite a general class of effective field theories involving dimension six two-derivatives and dimension eight four-derivatives operators, once resummation in certain BSM couplings is taken into account and some particular regimes of the relevant couplings are considered.

A New Stability Equation for the Abelian Higgs-Kibble Model with a Dim.6 Derivative Operator

We show that the dynamics of the scalar Higgs field in the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model, supplemented with a dimension 6 derivative operator, can be constrained at the quantum level by a certain stability equation. The latter holds true in the Landau gauge and is derived within the recently proposed extended field formalism where the physical scalar is described by a gauge-invariant field variable. Physical implications of the stability equation are discussed.

Renormalizable Extension of the Abelian Higgs-Kibble Model with a Dim.6 Derivative Operator

We present a new approach to the consistent subtraction of a non power-counting renormalizable extension of the Abelian Higgs-Kibble (HK) model supplemented by a dim.6 derivative-dependent operator controlled by the parameter $z$. A field-theoretic representation of the physical Higgs scalar by a gauge-invariant variable is used in order to formulate the theory by exploiting a novel differential equation, controlling the dependence of the quantized theory on $z$. These results pave the way to the consistent subtraction by a finite number of physical parameters of some non-power-counting renormalizable models possibly of direct relevance to the study of the Higgs potential at the LHC.

Background Field Method and Generalized Field Redefinitions in Effective Field Theories

We study the non-linear background field redefinitions arising at the quantum level in a spontaneously broken effective gauge field theory. The non-linear field redefinitions are crucial for the symmetric (i.e. fulfilling all the relevant functional identities of the theory) renormalization of gauge-invariant operators. In a general $R_ξ$-gauge the classical background-quantum splitting is also non-linearly deformed by radiative corrections. In the Landau gauge these deformations vanish to all orders in the loop expansion.

Background Field Method and Generalized Field Redefinitions in Effective Field Theories

We show that in a spontaneously broken effective gauge field theory, quantized in a general background $R_ξ$-gauge, also the background fields undergo a non-linear (albeit background-gauge invariant) field redefinition induced by radiative corrections. This redefinition proves to be crucial in order to renormalize the coupling constants of gauge-invariant operators in a gauge-independent way. The classical background-quantum splitting is also in general non-linearly deformed (in a non gauge-invariant way) by radiative corrections. Remarkably, such deformations vanish in the Landau gauge, to all orders in the loop expansion.

Off-shell renormalization in the presence of dimension 6 derivative operators. I. General theory

The consistent recursive subtraction of UV divergences order by order in the loop expansion for spontaneously broken effective field theories with dimension-6 derivative operators is presented for an Abelian gauge group. We solve the Slavnov-Taylor identity to all orders in the loop expansion by homotopy techniques and a suitable choice of invariant field coordinates (named bleached variables) for the linearly realized gauge group. This allows one to disentangle the gauge-invariant contributions to off-shell 1-PI amplitudes from those associated with the gauge-fixing and (generalized) non-polynomial field redefinitions (that do appear already at one loop). The tools presented can be easily generalized to the non-Abelian case.

Off-shell renormalization in the presence of dimension 6 derivative operators. II. UV coefficients

The full off-shell one loop renormalization for all divergent amplitudes up to dimension 6 in the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model, supplemented with a maximally power counting violating higher-dimensional gauge-invariant derivative interaction $\sim g ~ ϕ^\dagger ϕ(D^μϕ)^\dagger D_μϕ$, is presented. This allows one to perform the complete renormalization of radiatively generated dimension 6 operators in the model at hand. We describe in details the technical tools required in order to disentangle the contribution to UV divergences parameterized by (generalized) non-polynomial field redefinitions. We also discuss how to extract the dependence of the $β$-function coefficients on the non-renormalizable coupling $g$ in one loop approximation, as well as the cohomological techniques (contractible pairs) required to efficiently separate the mixing of contributions associated to different higher-dimensional operators in a spontaneously broken effective field theory.

Off-shell renormalization in Higgs effective field theories

The off-shell one-loop renormalization of a Higgs effective field theory possessing a scalar potential $\sim\left(Φ^\daggerΦ-\frac{v^2}2\right)^N$ with $N$ arbitrary is presented. This is achieved by renormalizing the theory once reformulated in terms of two auxiliary fields $X_{1,2}$, which, due to the invariance under an extended Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry, are tightly constrained by functional identities. The latter allow in turn the explicit derivation of the mapping onto the original theory, through which the (divergent) multi-Higgs amplitude are generated in a purely algebraic fashion. We show that, contrary to naive expectations based on the loss of power counting renormalizability, the Higgs field undergoes a linear Standard Model like redefinition, and evaluate the renormalization of the complete set of Higgs self-coupling in the $N\to\infty$ case.

Connecting amplitudes in different gauges beyond perturbation theory: a canonical flow approach

Physical quantities in gauge theories have to be gauge-independent. However their evaluation can be greatly simplified by working in particular gauges. Since physical quantities have to be gauge invariant, it is important to establish an approach allowing the comparison of computations carried out in different gauges even beyond perturbation theory. We show that the dependence on the gauge parameter $α=0$ in Yang-Mills theories is controlled by a canonical flow that explicitly solves the Nielsen identities of the model. Green's functions in the $α=0$ gauge are given by amplitudes evaluated in the theory at $α=0$ (e.g., in the example of Lorentz-covariant gauges, in terms of Landau gauge amplitudes) plus some contributions induced by the $α=0$-dependence of the generating functional of the canonical flow. Explicit formulas are presented and an application of the formalism to the gluon propagator is discussed.

Canonical Flow in the Space of Gauge Parameters

Gauge dependence of one-particle irreducible (1-PI) amplitudes in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory is shown to be generated by a canonical flow with respect to (w.r.t.) the extended Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identity, induced by the transformation of the gauge parameter under the BRST symmetry. For linear covariant gauges, the analytic expansion in the gauge parameter of 1-PI amplitudes is given in terms of coefficients evaluated in the Landau gauge and of derivatives w.r.t. the gauge parameter of the generating functional of the flow. An application to the gauge flow of the gluon propagator is considered.

Quantum Local Symmetry of the D-Dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Model: A Functional Approach

We summarize recent progress on the symmetric subtraction of the Non-Linear Sigma Model in $D$ dimensions, based on the validity of a certain Local Functional Equation (LFE) encoding the invariance of the SU(2) Haar measure under local left transformations. The deformation of the classical non-linearly realized symmetry at the quantum level is analyzed by cohomological tools. It is shown that all the divergences of the one-particle irreducible (1-PI) amplitudes (both on-shell and off-shell) can be classified according to the solutions of the LFE. Applications to the non-linearly realized Yang-Mills theory and to the electroweak theory, which is directly relevant to the model-independent analysis of LHC data, are briefly addressed.

The Background Field Method as a Canonical Transformation

We construct explicitly the canonical transformation that controls the full dependence (local and non-local) of the vertex functional of a Yang-Mills theory on a background field. After showing that the canonical transformation found is nothing but a direct field-theoretic generalization of the Lie transform of classical analytical mechanics, we comment on a number of possible applications, and in particular the non perturbative implementation of the background field method on the lattice, the background field formulation of the two particle irreducible formalism, and, finally, the formulation of the Schwinger-Dyson series in the presence of topologically non-trivial configurations.

One-loop Self-energy and Counterterms in a Massive Yang-Mills Theory based on the Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Group

In this paper we evaluate the self-energy of the vector mesons at one loop in our recently proposed subtraction scheme for massive nonlinearly realized SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We check the fulfillment of physical unitarity. The resulting self-mass can be compared with the value obtained in the massive Yang-Mills theory based on the Higgs mechanism, consisting in extra terms due to the presence of the Higgs boson (tadpoles included). Moreover we evaluate all the one-loop counterterms necessary for the next order calculations. By construction they satisfy all the equations of the model (Slavnov-Taylor, local functional equation and Landau gauge equation). They are sufficient to make all the one-loop amplitudes finite through the hierarchy encoded in the local functional equation.

Background field dependence from the Slavnov-Taylor identity in (non-perturbative) Yang-Mills theory

We show that in Yang-Mills theory the Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identity, extended in the presence of a background gauge connection, allows to fix in a unique way the dependence of the vertex functional on the background, once the 1-PI amplitudes at zero background are known. The reconstruction of the background dependence is carried out by purely algebraic techniques and therefore can be applied in a non-perturbative scheme (e.g. on the lattice or in the Schwinger-Dyson approach), provided that the latter preserves the ST identity. The field-antifield redefinition, which replaces the classical background-quantum splitting when quantum corrections are taken into account, is considered on the example of an instanton background in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory.
