WST instrument Exposure Time Calculator: full simulation of multi-mode spectrograph performance from source to detector

We present a comprehensive Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) developed for the Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) concept. The WST, currently in its conceptual phase, is designed as a next-generation large spectroscopic survey facility featuring three complementary observing modes: an Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) covering 370-930 nm at R of about 4800; a high-resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS-HR) with four bands at R of about 40000; and a low-resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS-LR) with four channels at R of about 3800-4900. The ETC simulates the complete photon-propagation path from astronomical source to detector, incorporating wavelength-dependent system throughput (telescope transmission, instrumental optics, detector quantum efficiency), accurate sky background via ESO SkyCalc integration, and a comprehensive noise treatment (photon noise, sky background, read-out noise, dark current). The computational core is implemented as the "pyetc_wst" Python library built on the MPDAF framework, supporting multiple target spectral energy distributions (stellar templates, blackbody, power-law, emission lines, and user-uploaded spectra with arbitrary redshift) and spatial morphologies (point sources and Sersic extended profiles). Four operational modes enable flexible exposure-time optimization. Full spectral outputs include wavelength-dependent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), source and sky photon counts, noise decomposition by component, and simulated extracted spectra. An interactive web interface, together with a REST API and a command-line tool, complete the user experience and enable batch survey-design workflows.

CUBES, the Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph: towards final design review

In the era of Extremely Large Telescopes, the current generation of 8-10m facilities are likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) has been designed to provide high instrumental efficiency ( $>$ 37\%) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R $>$ 20, 000 (with a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R $\sim$ 7, 000). With the design focusing on maximizing the instrument throughput (ensuring a Signal to Noise Ratio -SNR- $\sim$ 20 per spectral resolution element at 313 nm for U $\sim$ 17.5 mag objects in 1h of observations), it will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics: i) access to key lines of stellar spectra (e.g. lighter elements, in particular Beryllium), extragalactic studies (e.g. circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, cosmic UV background) and follow-up of explosive transients. We present the CUBES instrument design, currently in Phase-C and approaching the final design review, summarizing the hardware architecture and interfaces between the different subsystems as well as the relevant technical requirements. We describe the optical, mechanical, electrical design of the different subsystems (from the telescope adapter and support structure, through the main opto-mechanical path, including calibration unit, detector devices and cryostat control, main control electronics), detailing peculiar instrument functions like the Active Flexure Compensation (AFC). Furthermore, we outline the AITV concept and the main instrument operations giving an overview of its software ecosystem. Installation at the VLT is planned for 2028-2029 and first science operations in late 2029.

The status of the NIR arm of the SOXS Instrument toward the PAE

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory [1]. It offers a simultaneous spectral coverage over 350-2000 nm, with two separate spectrographs. In this paper we present the status of the Near InfraRed (NIR) cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph [1], in the range 0.80-2.00 μm with 15 orders, equipped with an 2k x 2k Hawaii H2RG IR array from Teledyne, working at 40K, that is currently assembled and tested on the SOXS instrument, in the premises of INAF in Padova. We describe the different tests and results of the cryo, vacuum, opto-mechanics and detector subsystems that finally will be part of the PAE by ESO.

Progress on the SOXS NIR Spectrograph AIT

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, ranging from 350 to 2000 nm. In this paper, we present the progress in the AIT phase of the Near InfraRed (NIR) arm. We describe the different AIT phases of the cryo, vacuum, opto-mechanics and detector subsystems, that finally converged at the INAF-OAB premises in Merate (Italy), where the NIR spectrograph is currently being assembled and tested, before the final assembly on SOXS.

CUBES and its software ecosystem: instrument simulation, control, and data processing

CUBES (Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph) is the recently approved high-efficiency VLT spectrograph aimed to observe the sky in the UV ground-based region (305-400 nm) with a high-resolution mode (~20K) and a low-resolution mode (~5K). In this paper we will briefly describe the requirements and the design of the several software packages involved in the project, namely the instrument control software, the exposure time calculator, the end-to-end simulator, and the data reduction software suite. We will discuss how the above mentioned blocks cooperate to build up a "software ecosystem" for the CUBES instrument, and to support the users from the proposal preparation to the science-grade data products.
