Convex projective manifolds, symmetric spaces and geometric decompositions

We prove that if a closed, indecomposable, properly convex real projective $4$-manifold is geometric or admits a geometric decomposition in the sense of Thurston, then every piece is real hyperbolic. This extends a theorem of Benoist to dimension four. Moreover, we build orientable (non-hyperbolic) $4$-manifolds of the above type, with arbitrary positive, even, Euler characteristic. Finally, we characterise the compact locally symmetric spaces that virtually support properly convex real projective structures in terms of their geometry.

Weakly almost-Fuchsian manifolds are nearly-Fuchsian

We show that a hyperbolic three-manifold $M$ containing a closed minimal surface with principal curvatures in $[-1,1]$ also contains nearby (non-minimal) surfaces with principal curvatures in $(-1,1)$. When $M$ is complete and homeomorphic to $S\times\mathbb{R}$, for $S$ a closed surface, this implies that $M$ is quasi-Fuchsian, answering a question left open from Uhlenbeck's 1983 seminal paper. Additionally, our result implies that there exist (many) quasi-Fuchsian manifolds that contain a closed surface with principal curvatures in $(-1,1)$, but no closed minimal surface with principal curvatures in $(-1,1)$, disproving a conjecture from the 2000s.

Uniqueness and non-uniqueness for the asymptotic Plateau problem in hyperbolic space

We prove several results on the number of solutions to the asymptotic Plateau problem in $\mathbb H^3$. Firstly we discuss criteria that ensure uniqueness. Given a Jordan curve $Λ$ in the asymptotic boundary of $\mathbb H^3$, we show that uniqueness of the minimal surfaces with asymptotic boundary $Λ$ is equivalent to uniqueness in the smaller class of stable minimal disks. Then we show that if a quasicircle (or more generally, a Jordan curve of finite width) $Λ$ is the asymptotic boundary of a minimal surface $Σ$ with principal curvatures less than or equal to 1 in absolute value, then uniqueness holds. In the direction of non-uniqueness, we construct an example of a quasicircle that is the asymptotic boundary of uncountably many pairwise distinct stable minimal disks.

Entire hypersurfaces of constant scalar curvature in Minkowski space

We show that every regular domain $\mathcal D$ in Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{n,1}$ which is not a wedge admits an entire hypersurface whose domain of dependence is $\mathcal D$ and whose scalar curvature is a prescribed constant (or function, under suitable hypotheses) in $(-\infty,0)$. Under rather general assumptions, these hypersurfaces are unique and provide foliations of $\mathcal D$. As an application, we show that every maximal globally hyperbolic Cauchy compact flat spacetime admits a foliation by hypersurfaces of constant scalar curvature, generalizing to any dimension previous results of Barbot-Béguin-Zeghib (for $n=2$) and Smith (for $n=3$).

The Anti-de Sitter proof of Thurston's earthquake theorem

Thurston's earthquake theorem asserts that every orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the circle admits an extension to the hyperbolic plane which is a (left or right) earthquake. The purpose of these notes is to provide a proof of Thurston's earthquake theorem, using the bi-invariant geometry of the Lie group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, which is also called Anti-de Sitter three-space. The involved techniques are elementary, and no background knowledge is assumed apart from some two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry.

On complete maximal submanifolds in pseudo-hyperbolic space

We provide a full classification of complete maximal $p$-dimensional spacelike submanifolds in the pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbf{H}^{p,q}$, and we study its applications to Teichmüller theory and to the theory of Anosov representations of hyperbolic groups in $\mathsf{PO}(p,q+1)$.

The multiple fibration problem for Seifert 3-orbifolds

We conclude the multiple fibration problem for closed orientable Seifert three-orbifolds, namely the determination of all the inequivalent fibrations that such an orbifold may admit. We treat here geometric orbifolds with geometries $\mathbb R^3$ and $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb R$ and bad orbifolds (hence non-geometric), since the only other geometry for which the multiple fibration phenomenon occurs, namely $\mathbb S^3$, has been treated before by the second and third author. For the geometry $\mathbb R^3$ we recover, by direct and geometric arguments, the computer-assisted results obtained by Conway, Delgado-Friedrichs, Huson and Thurston.

Completeness of convex entire surfaces in Minkowski 3-space

We prove four results towards a description, in terms of the null support function, of the set of isometric embeddings of the hyperbolic plane into Minkowski 3-space. We show that for sufficiently tame null support function, the corresponding entire surface of constant curvature -1 is complete, and for sufficiently sharp null support function, it is incomplete. Our results apply also to entire surfaces whose curvature is merely bounded.

Quasi-Fuchsian manifolds close to the Fuchsian locus are foliated by constant mean curvature surfaces

Even though it is known that there exist quasi-Fuchsian hyperbolic three-manifolds that do not admit any monotone foliation by constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, a conjecture due to Thurston asserts the existence of CMC foliations for all almost-Fuchsian manifolds, namely those quasi-Fuchsian manifolds that contain a closed minimal surface with principal curvatures in (-1,1). In this paper we prove that there exists a (unique) monotone CMC foliation for all quasi-Fuchsian manifolds that lie in a sufficiently small neighborhood of the Fuchsian locus.

Geometric transition from hyperbolic to anti-de Sitter structures in dimension four

We provide the first examples of geometric transition from hyperbolic to anti-de Sitter structures in dimension four, in a fashion similar to Danciger's three-dimensional examples. The main ingredient is a deformation of hyperbolic 4-polytopes, discovered by Kerckhoff and Storm, eventually collapsing to a 3-dimensional ideal cuboctahedron. We show the existence of a similar family of collapsing anti-de Sitter polytopes, and join the two deformations by means of an opportune half-pipe orbifold structure. The desired examples of geometric transition are then obtained by gluing copies of the polytope.

Hypersurfaces of constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature with Li-normalization in affine space

For convex hypersurfaces in the affine space $\mathbb{A}^{n+1}$ ($n\geq2$), A.-M.\ Li introduced the notion of $α$-normal field as a generalization of the affine normal field. By studying a Monge-Ampère equation with gradient blowup boundary condition, we show that regular domains in $\mathbb{A}^{n+1}$, defined with respect to a proper convex cone and satisfying some regularity assumption if $n\geq3$, are foliated by complete convex hypersurfaces with constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature relative to the Li-normalization. When $n=2$, a key feature is that no regularity assumption is required, and the result extends our recent work about the $α=1$ case.

Character varieties of a transitioning Coxeter 4-orbifold

In 2010, Kerckhoff and Storm discovered a path of hyperbolic 4-polytopes eventually collapsing to an ideal right-angled cuboctahedron. This is expressed by a deformation of the inclusion of a discrete reflection group (a right-angled Coxeter group) in the isometry group of hyperbolic 4-space. More recently, we have shown that the path of polytopes can be extended to Anti-de Sitter geometry so as to have geometric transition on a naturally associated 4-orbifold, via a transitional half-pipe structure. In this paper, we study the hyperbolic, Anti-de Sitter, and half-pipe character varieties of Kerckhoff and Storm's right-angled Coxeter group near each of the found holonomy representations, including a description of the singularity that appears at the collapse. An essential tool is the study of some rigidity properties of right-angled cusp groups in dimension four.

Para-hyperK\"ahler geometry of the deformation space of maximal globally hyperbolic anti-de Sitter three-manifolds

In this paper we study the para-hyperK\"ahler geometry of the deformation space of MGHC anti-de Sitter structures on $\Sigma\times\mathbb R$, for $\Sigma$ a closed oriented surface. We show that a neutral pseudo-Riemannian metric and three symplectic structures coexist with an integrable complex structure and two para-complex structures, satisfying the relations of para-quaternionic numbers. We show that these structures are directly related to the geometry of MGHC manifolds, via the Mess homeomorphism, the parameterization of Krasnov-Schlenker by the induced metric on $K$-surfaces, the identification with the cotangent bundle $T^*\mathcal{T}(\Sigma)$, and the circle action that arises from this identification. Finally, we study the relation to the natural para-complex geometry that the space inherits from being a component of the $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{B})$-character variety, where $\mathbb{B}$ is the algebra of para-complex numbers, and the symplectic geometry deriving from Goldman symplectic form.

The half-space model of pseudo-hyperbolic space

In this note we develop a half-space model for the pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{p,q}$, for any $p,q$ with $p\geq 1$. This half-space model embeds isometrically onto the complement of a degenerate totally geodesic hyperplane in $\mathbb{H}^{p,q}$. We describe the geodesics, the totally geodesic submanifolds, the horospheres, the isometry group in the half-space model, and we explain how to interpret the boundary at infinity in this setting.

Rigidity of minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphisms between spherical cone surfaces

We prove that any minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphism between two closed spherical surfaces with cone singularities is an isometry, without any assumption on the multiangles of the two surfaces. As an application, we show that every branched immersion of a closed surface of constant positive Gaussian curvature in Euclidean three-space is a branched covering onto a round sphere, thus generalizing the classical rigidity theorem of Liebmann to branched immersions.

On the diffeomorphism type of Seifert fibered spherical 3-orbifolds

It is well known that, among closed spherical Seifert three-manifolds, only lens spaces and prism manifolds admit several Seifert fibrations which are not equivalent up to diffeomorphism. Moreover the former admit infinitely many fibrations, and the latter exactly two. In this work, we analyse the non-uniqueness phenomenon for orbifold Seifert fibrations. For any closed spherical Seifert three-orbifold, we determine the number of its inequivalent fibrations. When these are in a finite number (in fact, at most three) we provide a complete list. In case of infinitely many fibrations, we describe instead an algorithmic procedure to determine whether two closed spherical Seifert orbifolds are diffeomorphic.

Affine deformations of quasi-divisible convex cones

For any subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})\ltimes\mathbb{R}^3$ obtained by adding a translation part to a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ which is the fundamental group of a finite-volume convex projective surface, we first show that under a natural condition on the translation parts of parabolic elements, the affine action of the group on $\mathbb{R}^3$ has convex domains of discontinuity that are regular in a certain sense, generalizing a result of Mess for globally hyperbolic flat spacetimes. We then classify all these domains and show that the quotient of each of them is an affine manifold foliated by convex surfaces with constant affine Gaussian curvature. The proof is based on a correspondence between the geometry of an affine space endowed with a convex cone and the geometry of a convex tube domain. As an independent result, we show that the moduli space of such groups is a vector bundle over the moduli space of finite-volume convex projective structures, with rank equaling the dimension of the Teichmüller space.
