On the Behrend function and the blowup of some fat points

The Behrend function of a $\mathbb C$-scheme $X$ is a constructible function $ν_X\colon X(\mathbb C) \to \mathbb Z$ introduced by Behrend, intrinsic to the scheme structure of $X$. It is a (subtle) invariant of singularities of $X$, playing a prominent role in enumerative geometry. To date, only a handful of general properties of the Behrend function are known. In this paper, we compute it for a large class of fat points (schemes supported at a single point). We first observe that, if $X \hookrightarrow \mathbb A^N$ is a fat point, $ν_X$ is the sum of the multiplicities of the irreducible components of the exceptional divisor $E_{X}\mathbb A^N$ in the blowup $\textrm{Bl}_{X}\mathbb A^N$. Moreover, we prove that $ν_X$ can be computed explicitly through the normalisation of $\textrm{Bl}_{X}\mathbb A^N$. The proofs of our explicit formulas for the Behrend function of a fat point in $\mathbb A^2$ rely heavily on toric geometry techniques. Along the way, we find a formula for the number of irreducible components of $E_{X}\mathbb A^2$, where $X \hookrightarrow \mathbb A^2$ is a fat point such that $\textrm{Bl}_{X}\mathbb A^2$ is normal.

Sur la lissité du schéma Quot ponctuel emboîté

In this paper we characterise the smoothness of the nested Quot scheme of points of a smooth variety, namely the moduli space parametrising flags of $0$-dimensional quotients of a fixed locally free sheaf. Our results extend Cheah's classification of smooth nested Hilbert schemes.

Framed sheaves on projective space and Quot schemes

We prove that, given integers $m\geq 3$, $r\geq 1$ and $n\geq 0$, the moduli space of torsion free sheaves on $\mathbb P^m$ with Chern character $(r,0,\ldots,0,-n)$ that are trivial along a hyperplane $D \subset \mathbb P^m$ is isomorphic to the Quot scheme $\mathrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^m}(\mathscr O^{\oplus r},n)$ of $0$-dimensional length $n$ quotients of the free sheaf $\mathscr O^{\oplus r}$ on $\mathbb A^m$.

The local motivic DT/PT correspondence

We show that the Quot scheme $Q_L^n = \textrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^3}(\mathscr I_L,n)$ parameterising length $n$ quotients of the ideal sheaf of a line in $\mathbb{A}^3$ is a global critical locus, and calculate the resulting motivic partition function (varying $n$), in the ring of relative motives over the configuration space of points in $\mathbb{A}^3$. As in the work of Behrend-Bryan-Szendrői this enables us to define a virtual motive for the Quot scheme of $n$ points of the ideal sheaf $\mathscr I_C\subset \mathscr O_Y$, where $C\subset Y$ is a smooth curve embedded in a smooth 3-fold $Y$, and we compute the associated motivic partition function. The result fits into a motivic wall-crossing type formula, refining the relation between Behrend's virtual Euler characteristic of $\textrm{Quot}_Y(\mathscr I_C,n)$ and of the symmetric product $\textrm{Sym}^nC$. Our "relative" analysis leads to results and conjectures regarding the pushforward of the sheaf of vanishing cycles along the Hilbert-Chow map $Q_L^n \rightarrow \textrm{Sym}^n(\mathbb{A}^3)$, and connections with cohomological Hall algebra representations.

Framed motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of small crepant resolutions

For an arbitrary integer $r\geq 1$, we compute $r$-framed motivic PT and DT invariants of small crepant resolutions of toric Calabi-Yau $3$-folds, establishing a "higher rank" version of the motivic DT/PT wall-crossing formula. This generalises the work of Morrison and Nagao. Our formulae, in particular their relationship with the $r=1$ theory, fit nicely in the current development of higher rank refined DT invariants.

Higher rank K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory of points

We exploit the critical locus structure on the Quot scheme $\mathrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^3}(\mathscr O^{\oplus r},n)$, in particular the associated symmetric obstruction theory, in order to define rank $r$ K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the Calabi-Yau $3$-fold $\mathbb A^3$. We compute the associated partition function as a plethystic exponential, proving a conjecture proposed in string theory by Awata-Kanno and Benini-Bonelli-Poggi-Tanzini. A crucial step in the proof is the fact that the invariants do not depend on the equivariant parameters of the framing torus $(\mathbb C^\ast)^r$. Reducing from K-theoretic to cohomological invariants, we compute the corresponding DT invariants, proving a conjecture of Szabo. Reducing further to enumerative DT invariants, we solve the higher rank DT theory of a pair $(X,F)$, where $F$ is an equivariant exceptional vector bundle on a projective toric $3$-fold $X$. Finally, we give a mathematical definition of the chiral elliptic genus studied in physics by Benini-Bonelli-Poggi-Tanzini. This allows us to define elliptic DT invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ in arbitrary rank, and to study their first properties.

Virtual classes and virtual motives of Quot schemes on threefolds

For a simple, rigid vector bundle $F$ on a Calabi-Yau $3$-fold $Y$, we construct a symmetric obstruction theory on the Quot scheme $\textrm{Quot}_Y(F,n)$, and we solve the associated enumerative theory. We discuss the case of other $3$-folds. Exploiting the critical structure on $\textrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^3}(\mathscr O^r,n)$, we construct a virtual motive (in the sense of Behrend-Bryan-Szendrői) for $\textrm{Quot}_Y(F,n)$ for an arbitrary vector bundle $F$ on a smooth $3$-fold $Y$. We compute the associated motivic partition function. We obtain new examples of higher rank (motivic) Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

On the motive of the Quot scheme of finite quotients of a locally free sheaf

Let $X$ be a smooth variety, $E$ a locally free sheaf on $X$. We express the generating function of the motives $[\textrm{Quot}_X(E,n)]$ in terms of the power structure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This extends a recent result of Bagnarol, Fantechi and Perroni for curves, and a result of Gusein-Zade, Luengo and Melle-Hernández for Hilbert schemes. We compute this generating function for curves and we express the relative motive $[\textrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^d}(\mathscr{O}^{\oplus r}) \to \textrm{Sym}\, \mathbb A^d]$ as a plethystic exponential.

The equivariant Atiyah class

Let $X$ be a complex scheme acted on by an affine algebraic group $G$. We prove that the Atiyah class of a $G$-equivariant perfect complex on $X$, as constructed by Huybrechts and Thomas, is $G$-equivariant in a precise sense. As an application, we show that, if $G$ is reductive, the obstruction theory on the fine relative moduli space $M\to B$ of simple perfect complexes on a $G$-invariant smooth projective family $Y\to B$ is $G$-equivariant. The results contained here are meant to suggest how to check the equivariance of the natural obstruction theories on a wide variety of moduli spaces equipped with a torus action, arising for instance in Donaldson--Thomas theory and Vafa--Witten theory.

The Hilbert scheme of hyperelliptic Jacobians and moduli of Picard sheaves

Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve embedded in its Jacobian $J$ via an Abel-Jacobi map. We compute the scheme structure of the Hilbert scheme component of $\textrm{Hilb}_J$ containing the Abel-Jacobi curve as a point. We relate the result to the ramification (and to the fibres) of the Torelli morphism $\mathcal M_g\rightarrow \mathcal A_g$ along the hyperelliptic locus. As an application, we determine the scheme structure of the moduli space of Picard sheaves (introduced by Mukai) on a hyperelliptic Jacobian.

Virtual counts on Quot schemes and the higher rank local DT/PT correspondence

We show that the Quot scheme $\text{Quot}_{\mathbf{A}^3}(\mathcal{O}^r,n)$ admits a symmetric obstruction theory, and we compute its virtual Euler characteristic. We extend the calculation to locally free sheaves on smooth $3$-folds, thus refining a special case of a recent Euler characteristic calculation of Gholampour-Kool. We then extend Toda's higher rank DT/PT correspondence on Calabi-Yau $3$-folds to a local version centered at a fixed slope stable sheaf. This generalises (and refines) the local DT/PT correspondence around the cycle of a Cohen-Macaulay curve. Our approach clarifies the relation between Gholampour-Kool's functional equation for Quot schemes, and Toda's higher rank DT/PT correspondence.

Jet bundles on Gorenstein curves and applications

In the last twenty years a number of papers appeared aiming to construct locally free replacements of the sheaf of principal parts for families of Gorenstein curves. The main goal of this survey is to present to the widest possible audience of mathematical readers a catalogue of such constructions, discussing the related literature and reporting on a few applications to classical problems in Enumerative Algebraic Geometry.

Pullbacks of universal Brill-Noether classes via Abel-Jacobi morphisms

Following Mumford and Chiodo, we compute the Chern character of the derived pushforward $\textrm{ch} (R^\bulletπ_\ast\mathscr{O}(\mathsf{D}))$, for $\mathsf D$ an arbitrary element of the Picard group of the universal curve over the moduli stack of stable marked curves. This allows us to express the pullback of universal Brill-Noether classes via Abel-Jacobi sections to the compactified universal Jacobians, for all compactifications such that the section is a well-defined morphism.

The DT/PT correspondence for smooth curves

We show a version of the DT/PT correspondence relating local curve counting invariants, encoding the contribution of a fixed smooth curve in a Calabi-Yau threefold. We exploit a local study of the Hilbert-Chow morphism about the cycle of a smooth curve. We determine, via Quot schemes, the global Donaldson-Thomas theory of a general Abel-Jacobi curve of genus $3$.

On coherent sheaves of small length on the affine plane

We classify coherent modules on $k[x,y]$ of length at most $4$ and supported at the origin. We compare our calculation with the motivic class of the moduli stack parametrizing such modules, extracted from the Feit-Fine formula. We observe that the natural torus action on this stack has finitely many fixed points, corresponding to connected skew Ferrers diagrams.

Local contributions to Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Let $C$ be a smooth curve embedded in a smooth quasi-projective threefold $Y$, and let $Q^n_C=\textrm{Quot}_n(\mathscr I_C)$ be the Quot scheme of length $n$ quotients of its ideal sheaf. We show the identity $\tildeχ(Q^n_C)=(-1)^nχ(Q^n_C)$, where $\tildeχ$ is the Behrend weighted Euler characteristic. When $Y$ is a projective Calabi-Yau threefold, this shows that the DT contribution of a smooth rigid curve is the signed Euler characteristic of the moduli space. This can be rephrased as a DT/PT wall-crossing type formula, which can be formulated for arbitrary smooth curves. In general, the formula is shown to be equivalent to a certain Behrend function identity.
