Filter design for hybrid spin gates

The impact of control sequences on the environmental coupling of a quantum system can be described in terms of a filter. Here we analyze how the coherent evolution of two interacting spins subject to periodic control pulses, at the example of a nitrogen vacancy center coupled to a nuclear spin, can be described in the filter framework in both the weak and the strong coupling limit. A universal functional dependence around the filter resonances then allows for tuning the coupling type and strength. Originally limited to small rotation angles, we show how the validity range of the filter description can be extended to the long time limit by time-sliced evolution sequences. Based on that insight, the construction of tunable, noise decoupled, conditional gates composed of alternating pulse sequences is proposed. In particular such an approach can lead to a significant improvement in fidelity as compared to a strictly periodic control sequence. Moreover we analyze the decoherence impact, the relation to the filter for classical noise known from dynamical decoupling sequences, and we outline how an alternating sequence can improve spin sensing protocols.

Spinodal Instabilities and Super-Planckian Excursions in Natural Inflation

Models such as Natural Inflation that use Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons (PNGB's) as the inflaton are attractive for many reasons. However, they typically require trans-Planckian field excursions $ΔΦ>M_{\rm Pl}$, due to the need for an axion decay constant $f>M_{\rm Pl}$ to have both a sufficient number of e-folds {\em and} values of $n_s,\ r$ consistent with data. Such excursions would in general require the addition of all other higher dimension operators consistent with symmetries, thus disrupting the required flatness of the potential and rendering the theory non-predictive. We show that in the case of Natural Inflation, the existence of spinodal instabilities (modes with tachyonic masses) can modify the inflaton equations of motion to the point that versions of the model with $f<M_{\rm Pl}$ can still inflate for the required number of e-folds. The instabilities naturally give rise to two separate phases of inflation with different values of the Hubble parameter $H$ one driven by the zero mode, the other by the unstable fluctuation modes. The values of $n_s$ and $r$ typically depend on the initial conditions for the zero mode, and, at least for those examined here, the values of $r$ tend to be unobservably small.

Lorentz symmetry from a random Hamiltonian

We match the density of energy eigenstates of a local field theory with that of a random Hamiltonian order by order in a Taylor expansion. In our previous work we assumed Lorentz symmetry of the field theory, which entered through the dispersion relation. Here we extend that work to consider a generalized dispersion relation and show that the Lorentz symmetric case is preferred, in that the Lorentz symmetric dispersion relation gives a better approximation to a random Hamiltonian than the other local dispersion relations we considered.

Eternal Inflation with Arrival Terminals

We analyze the cosmological role of terminal vacua in the string theory landscape, and point out that existing work on this topic makes very strong assumptions about the properties of the terminal vacua. We explore the implications of relaxing these assumptions (by including "arrival" as well as "departure" terminals) and demonstrate that the results in earlier work are highly sensitive to their assumption of no arrival terminals. We use our discussion to make some general points about tuning and initial conditions in cosmology.

No Firewalls or Information Problem for Black Holes Entangled with Large Systems

We discuss how under certain conditions the black hole information puzzle and the (related) arguments that firewalls are a typical feature of black holes can break down. We first review the arguments of AMPS favoring firewalls, focusing on entanglements in a simple toy model for a black hole and the Hawking radiation. By introducing a large and inaccessible system entangled with the black hole (representing perhaps a de Sitter stretched horizon or inaccessible part of a landscape) we show complementarity can be restored and firewalls can be avoided throughout the black hole's evolution. Under these conditions black holes do not have an "information problem". We point out flaws in some of our earlier arguments that such entanglement might be generically present in some cosmological scenarios, and call out certain ways our picture may still be realized.

Feeling de Sitter

We address the following question: To what extent can a quantum field tell if it has been placed in de Sitter space? Our approach is to use the techniques of non-equilibrium quantum field theory to compute the time evolution of a state which starts off in flat space for (conformal) times $η<η_0$, and then evolves in a de Sitter background turned on instantaneously at $η=η_0$. We find that the answer depends on what quantities one examines. We study a range of them, all based on two-point correlation functions, and analyze which ones approach the standard Bunch-Davies values over time. The outcome of this analysis suggests that the nature of the equilibration process in this system is similar to that in more familiar systems.

Origin of probabilities and their application to the multiverse

We argue using simple models that all successful practical uses of probabilities originate in quantum fluctuations in the microscopic physical world around us, often propagated to macroscopic scales. Thus we claim there is no physically verified fully classical theory of probability. We comment on the general implications of this view, and specifically question the application of classical probability theory to cosmology in cases where key questions are known to have no quantum answer. We argue that the ideas developed here may offer a way out of the notorious measure problems of eternal inflation.

Holographic bounds and finite inflation

We compare two holographic arguments that impose especially strong bounds on the amount of inflation. One comes from the de Sitter Equilibrium cosmology and the other from the work of Banks and Fischler. We find that simple versions of these two approaches yield the same bound on the number of e-foldings. A careful examination reveals that while these pictures are similar in spirit, they are not necessarily identical prescriptions. We apply the two pictures to specific cosmologies which expose potentially important differences and which also demonstrate ways these seemingly simple proposals can be tricky to implement in practice.

Testing quantum gravity by nanodiamond interferometry with nitrogen-vacancy centers

Interferometry with massive particles may have the potential to explore the limitations of standard quantum mechanics in particular where it concerns its boundary with general relativity and the yet to be developed theory of quantum gravity. This development is hindered considerably by the lack of experimental evidence and testable predictions. Analyzing effects that appear to be common to many of such theories, such as a modification of the energy dispersion and of the canonical commutation relation within the standard framework of quantum mechanics, has been proposed as a possible way forward. Here we analyze in some detail the impact of a modified energy-momentum dispersion in a Ramsey-Bordé setup and provide achievable bounds of these correcting terms when operating such an interferometer with nanodiamonds. Thus, taking thermal and gravitational disturbances into account will show that without specific prerequisites, quantum gravity modifications may in general be suppressed requiring a revision of previously estimated bounds. As a possible solution we propose a stable setup that is rather insensitive to these effects. Finally, we address the problems of decoherence and pulse errors in such setups and discuss the scalings and advantages with increasing particle mass.

Cosmological Consequences of Initial State Entanglement

We explore the cosmological consequences of having the fluctuations of the inflaton field entangled with those of another scalar, within the context of a toy model consisting of non-interacting, minimally coupled scalars in a fixed de Sitter background. We find that despite the lack of interactions in the Lagrangian, the initial state entanglement modifies the mode equation for the inflaton fluctuations and thus can induce changes in cosmological observables. These effects are examined for a variety of choices of masses and we find that they can be consistent with the requirement that the back reaction of the modified state not affect the inflationary phase while still giving rise to observable effects in the power spectrum. Our results suggest that more realistic extensions of the ideas explored here beyond the simple toy model may lead to interesting observable effects.

Tuning, Ergodicity, Equilibrium and Cosmology

I explore the possibility that the cosmos is fundamentally an equilibrium system, and review the attractive features of such theories. Equilibrium cosmologies are commonly thought to fail due to the ``Boltzmann Brain'' problem. I show that it is possible to evade the Boltzmann Brain problem if there is a suitable coarse grained relationship between the fundamental degrees of freedom and the cosmological observables. I make my main points with simple toy models, and then review the de Sitter equilibrium model as an illustration.

Dark Matter Annihilations in the Causal Diamond

We investigate the implications of dark matter annihilations for cosmological parameter constraints using the causal entropic principle. In this approach cosmologies are weighted by the total entropy production within a causally connected region of spacetime. We calculate the expected entropy from dark matter annihilations within the causal diamond and investigate the preferred values of the cosmological constant and the mass and annihilation cross section of the annihilating dark matter and their dependence on the assumptions in the models. For realistic values of the cross section we typically find preferred values of $Λ$ on the order of $10^{-5}$ of the present value assuming dark matter annihilations are the primary source of entropy production. The greatest amount of entropy production from dark matter within the causal diamond is likely to occur with light keV scale dark matter with low annihilation cross section. We also investigate the effect of combining this entropy with the entropy production from stars, and show that if the primary source of entropy production is from stars, varying the dark matter cross section directly produces a preferred value of $Ω_m$ in excellent agreement with observations.

Self-assembling hybrid diamond-biological quantum devices

The realization of scalable arrangements of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond remains a key challenge on the way towards efficient quantum information processing, quantum simulation and quantum sensing applications. Although technologies based on implanting NV-center in bulk diamond crystals or hybrid device approaches have been developed, they are limited in the achievable spatial resolution and by the intricate technological complexities involved in achieving scalability. We propose and demonstrate a novel approach for creating an arrangement of NV-centers, based on the self-assembling capabilities of biological systems and its beneficial nanometer spatial resolution. Here, a self-assembled protein structure serves as a structural scaffold for surface functionalized nanodiamonds, in this way allowing for the controlled creation of NV-structures on the nanoscale and providing a new avenue towards bridging the bio-nano interface. One-, two- as well as three-dimensional structures are within the scope of biological structural assembling techniques. We realized experimentally the formation of regular structures by interconnecting nanodiamonds using biological protein scaffolds. Based on the achievable NV-center distances of 11nm, we evaluate the expected dipolar coupling interaction with neighboring NV-center as well as the expected decoherence time. Moreover, by exploiting these couplings, we provide a detailed theoretical analysis on the viability of multiqubit quantum operations, suggest the possibility of individual addressing based on the random distribution of the NV intrinsic symmetry axes and address the challenges posed by decoherence and imperfect couplings. We then demonstrate in the last part that our scheme allows for the high-fidelity creation of entanglement, cluster states and quantum simulation applications.

Coupling of nitrogen vacancy centers in nanodiamonds by means of phonons

Realising controlled quantum dynamics via the magnetic interactions between colour centers in diamond remains a challenge despite recent demonstrations for nanometer separated pairs. Here we propose to use the intrinsic acoustical phonons in diamond as a data bus for accomplishing this task. We show that for nanodiamonds the electron-phonon coupling can take significant values that together with mode frequencies in the THz range, can serve as a resource for conditional gate operations. Based on these results we analyze how to use this phonon-induced interaction for constructing quantum gates among the electron-spin triplet ground states, introducing the phonon dependence via Raman transitions. Combined with decoupling pulses this offers the possibility for creating entangled states within nanodiamonds on the scale of several tens of nanometers, a promising prerequisite for quantum sensing applications.

Toy model studies of tuning and typicality with an eye toward cosmology

We investigate a number of simple toy models to explore interesting relationships between dynamics and typicality. We start with an infinite model that has been proposed as an illustration of how non-ergodic dynamics can produce interesting features that are suggestive for cosmological applications. We consider various attempts to define the infinite model more rigorously as a limit of a finite system. None of our attempts at such rigor were able to preserve the attractive properties. We hope our work will challenge others to find more successful toy models. The difficulty of finding such models suggests that connections between dynamics and typicality we hope for in cosmological theories such as eternal inflation may not be so easy to achieve.

Creating universes with thick walls

We study the dynamics of a spherically symmetric false vacuum bubble embedded in a true vacuum region separated by a "thick wall", which is generated by a scalar field in a quartic potential. We study the "Farhi-Guth-Guven" (FGG) quantum tunneling process by constructing numerical solutions relevant to this process. The ADM mass of the spacetime is calculated, and we show that there is a lower bound that is a significant fraction of the scalar field mass. We argue that the zero mass solutions used to by some to argue against the physicality of the FGG process are artifacts of the thin wall approximation used in earlier work. We argue that the zero mass solutions should not be used to question the viability of the FGG process.

Effects of Inhomogeneity on the Causal Entropic prediction of Lambda

The causal entropic principle aims to predict the unexpectedly small value of the cosmological constant Lambda using a weighting by entropy increase on causal diamonds. The original work assumed a purely isotropic and homogeneous cosmology. But even the level of inhomogeneity observed in our universe forces reconsideration of certain arguments about entropy production. In particular, we must consider an ensemble of causal diamonds associated with one cosmology, and we can no longer immediately discard entropy production in the far future of the universe. Depending on our choices for a probability measure and our treatment of black hole evaporation, the prediction for Lambda may be left intact or dramatically altered.

Cosmic curvature from de Sitter equilibrium cosmology

I show that the de Sitter Equilibrium cosmology generically predicts observable levels of curvature in the Universe today. The predicted value of the curvature depends only on the ratio of the density of non-relativistic matter to energy density in cosmological constant, and the value of the curvature from the initial bubble that starts the inflation. The result is independent of the scale of inflation, the shape of the potential during inflation, and many other details of the cosmology. Future cosmological measurements of the matter density, cosmological constant and curvature will open up a window on the very beginning of our Universe and offer an opportunity to support or falsify the de Sitter Equilibrium cosmology.
