Coulomb distortion effects in quasi-elastic (e,e') scattering on heavy nuclei

The influence of the Coulomb distortion for quasi-elastic (e,e') scattering on highly charged nuclei is investigated in distorted wave Born approximation for electrons. The Dirac equation is solved numerically in order to obtain exact electron continuum states in the electrostatic field generated by the charge distribution of an atomic nucleus. Different approximate models are used to describe the nucleon current in order to show that, at high electron energies and energy-momentum transfer, the influence of Coulomb distortions on (e,e') cross sections can be reliably described by the effective momentum approximation, irrespective of details concerning the description of the nuclear current.

Bound-free pair production cross section in heavy-ion colliders from the equivalent photon approach

Exact calculations of the electron-positron pair production by a single photon in the Coulomb field of a nucleus with simultaneous capture of the electron into the K-shell are discussed for different nuclear charges. Using the equivalent photon method of Weizsaecker and Williams, a simple expression for the bound-free production of electron-positron pairs by colliding very-high-energy fully stripped heavy ions is derived for nuclei of arbitrary charge.

Focusing of high-energy particles in the electrostatic field of a homogeneously charged sphere and the effective momentum approximation

The impact of the strongly attractive electromagnetic field of heavy nuclei on electrons in quasi-elastic (e,e') scattering is often accounted for by the effective momentum approximation. This method is a plane wave Born approximation which takes the twofold effect of the attractive nucleus on initial and final state electrons into account, namely the modification of the electron momentum in the vicinity of the nucleus, and the focusing of electrons towards the nuclear region leading to an enhancement of the corresponding wave function amplitudes. The focusing effect due to the attractive Coulomb field of a homogeneously charged sphere on a classical ensemble of charged particles incident on the field is calculated in the highly relativistic limit and compared to results obtained from exact solutions of the Dirac equation. The result is relevant for the theoretical foundation of the effective momentum approximation and describes the high energy behavior of the amplitude of continuum Dirac waves in the potential of a homogeneously charged sphere. Our findings indicate that the effective momentum approximation is a useful approximation for the calculation of Coulomb corrections in (e,e') scattering off heavy nuclei for sufficiently high electron energies and momentum transfer.

Entropy bound and local quantum field theory

I comment on Ulvi Yurtsever's result, which states that the entropy of a truncated bosonic Fock space is given by a holographic bound when the energy of the Fock states is constrained gravitationally. The derivation given in Yurtsever's paper contains an subtle mistake, which invalidates the result. A more restrictive, non-holographic entropy bound is derived.

Resummation of mass terms in perturbative massless quantum field theory

The neutral massless scalar quantum field $Φ$ in four-dimensional space-time is considered, which is subject to a simple bilinear self-interaction. Is is well-known from renormalization theory that adding a term of the form $-\frac{m^2}{2} Φ^2$ to the Lagrangean has the formal effect of shifting the particle mass from the original zero value to m after resummation of all two-leg insertions in the Feynman graphs appearing in the perturbative expansion of the S-matrix. However, this resummation is accompanied by some subtleties if done in a proper mathematical manner. Although the model seems to be almost trivial, is shows many interesting features which are useful for the understanding of the convergence behavior of perturbation theory in general. Some important facts in connection with the basic principles of quantum field theory and distribution theory are highlighted, and a remark is made on possible generalizations of the distribution spaces used in local quantum field theory. A short discussion how one can view the spontaneous breakdown of gauge symmetry in massive gauge theories within a massless framework is presented.

The position of the quasielastic peak and electron Coulomb distortion in (e,e') scattering

The position of the quasielastic peak for (e,e') scattering off 208-Pb extracted from a selected data set measured at Saclay is related to a heuristic theoretical description. An analysis of the data shows that the peak position can be described very accurately by a simple equation in the relevant kinematic region where a pronounced peak is observable. The simple findings result in a concluding comment related to recent calculations concerning the Coulomb distortion in (e,e') scattering for heavy nuclei.

Causal construction of the massless vertex diagram

The massless one-loop vertex diagram is constructed by exploiting the causal structure of the diagram in configuration space, which can be translated directly into dispersive relations in momentum space.

Just dust : About the (in)applicability of rotating dust solutions as realistic galaxy models

Solutions of the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations describing the interior of circularly rotating dust are investigated in order to study their potential applicability as galaxy models. It is shown that such interior solutions cannot be used as global metrics without becoming unphysical in certain regions of space. Although definite results concerning the non-existence of a continuation into a vacuum can only be derived for interior solutions describing rigidly rotating dust, the present analysis exhibits that the case of non-rigidly rotating dust would in general also be inadequate as a physically reasonable galaxy model.

Dispersive calculation of the massless multi-loop sunrise diagram

The massless sunrise diagram with an arbitrary number of loops is calculated in a simple but formal manner. The result is then verified by rigorous mathematical treatment. Pitfalls in the calculation with distributions are highlighted and explained. The result displays the high energy behaviour of the massive sunrise diagrams, whose calculation is involved already for the two-loop case.

Coulomb distortion of relativistic electrons in the nuclear electrostatic field

Continuum states of the Dirac equation are calculated numerically for the electrostatic field generated by the charge distribution of an atomic nucleus. The behavior of the wave functions of an incoming electron with a given asymptotic momentum in the nuclear region is discussed in detail and the results are compared to different approximations used in the data analysis for quasielastic electron scattering off medium and highly charged nuclei. It is found that most of the approximations provide an accurate description of the electron wave functions in the range of electron energies above 100 MeV typically used in experiments for quasielastic electron scattering off nuclei only near the center of the nucleus. It is therefore necessary that the properties of exact wave functions are investigated in detail in order to obtain reliable results in the data analysis of quasielastic (e,e'p) knockout reactions or inclusive quasielastic (e,e') scattering. Detailed arguments are given that the effective momentum approximation with a fitted potential parameter is a viable method for a simplified treatment of Coulomb corrections for certain kinematical regions used in experiments. Numerical calculations performed within the framework of the single particle shell model for nucleons lead to the conclusion that our results are incompatible with calculations performed about a decade ago, where exact electron wave functions were used in order to calculate Coulomb corrections in distorted wave Born approximation. A discussion of the exact solutions of the Dirac equation for free electrons in a Coulomb field generated by a point-like charge and some details relevant for the numerical calculations are given in the appendix.

Radial fall of a test particle onto an evaporating black hole

A test particle falling into a classical black hole crosses the event horizon and ends up in the singularity within finite eigentime. In the `more realistic' case of a `classical' evaporating black hole, an observer falling onto a black hole observes a sudden evaporation of the hole. This illustrates the fact that the discussion of the classical process commonly found in the literature may become obsolete when the black hole has a finite lifetime. The situation is basically the same for more complex cases, e.g. where a particle collides with two merging black holes. It should be pointed out that the model used in this paper is mainly of academic interest, since the description of the physics near a black hole horizon still presents a difficult problem which is not yet fully understood, but our model provides a valuable possibility for students to enter the interesting field of black hole physics and to perform numerical calculations of their own which are not very involved from the computational point of view.

Holographic entropy bound from gravitational Fock space truncation

A simplified derivation of Yurtsever's result, which states that the entropy of a truncated bosonic Fock space is given by a holographic bound when the energy of the Fock states is constrained gravitationally, is given for asymptotically flat spacetimes with arbitrary dimension d greater or equal to four. For this purpose, a scalar field confined to a spherical volume in d-dimensional spacetime is considered. Imposing an upper bound on the total energy of the corresponding Fock states which ensures that the system is in a stable configuration against gravitational collapse and imposing a cutoff on the maximum energy of the field modes of the order of the Planck energy leads to an entropy bound of holographic type. A simple derivation of the entropy bound is also given for the fermionic case.

Perturbative quantum gauge invariance: Where the ghosts come from

A condensed introduction to quantum gauge theories is given in the perturbative S-matrix framework; path integral methods are used nowhere. This approach emphasizes the fact that it is not necessary to start from classical gauge theories which are then subject to quantization, but it is also possible to recover the classical group structure and coupling properties from purely quantum mechanical principles. As a main tool we use a free field version of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin gauge transformation, which contains no interaction terms related to a coupling constant. This free gauge transformation can be formulated in an analogous way for quantum electrodynamics, Yang-Mills theories with massless or massive gauge bosons and quantum gravity.

Coulomb corrections for quasielastic (e,e') scattering: eikonal approximation

We address the problem of including Coulomb distortion effects in inclusive quasielastic (e,e') reactions using the eikonal approximation. Our results indicate that Coulomb corrections may become large for heavy nuclei for certain kinematical regions. The issues of our model are presented in detail and the results are compared to calculations of the Ohio group, where Dirac wave functions were used both for electrons and nucleons. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained by exact calculations.

Improved effective momentum approximation for quasielastic (e,e') scattering off highly charged nuclei

We address the problem of including Coulomb distortion effects in inclusive quasielastic (e,e') reactions using an improved version of the effective momentum approximation. Arguments are given that a simple modification of the effective momentum approximation, which is no longer applicable in its original form in the case of highly charged nuclei, leads to very good results. A comparison of the improved effective momentum method with exact calculations is given. A critical remark concerns recent experiments with inclusive quasielastic positron scattering.

Full Hydrodynamic Simulation of GaAs MESFETs

A finite difference upwind discretization scheme in two dimensions is presented in detail for the transient simulation of the highly coupled non-linear partial differential equations of the full hydrodynamic model, providing thereby a practical engineering tool for improved charge carrier transport simulations at high electric fields and frequencies. The discretization scheme preserves the conservation and transportive properties of the equations. The hydrodynamic model is able to describe inertia effects which play an increasing role in different fields of micro- and optoelectronics, where simplified charge transport models like the drift-diffusion model and the energy balance model are no longer applicable. Results of extensive numerical simulations are shown for a two-dimensional MESFET device. A comparison of the hydrodynamic model to the commonly used energy balance model is given and the accuracy of the results is discussed.

Finite calculation of divergent selfenergy diagrams

Using dispersive techniques, it is possible to avoid ultraviolet divergences in the calculation of Feynman diagrams, making subsequent regularization of divergent diagrams unnecessary. We give a simple introduction to the most important features of such dispersive techniques in the framework of the so-called finite causal perturbation theory. The method is also applied to the 'divergent' general massive two-loop sunrise selfenergy diagram, where it leads directly to an analytic expression for the imaginary part of the diagram in accordance with the literature, whereas the real part can be obtained by a single integral dispersion relation. It is pointed out that dispersive methods have been known for decades and have been applied to several nontrivial Feynman diagram calculations.

Multiphoton Exchange Processes in Ultraperipheral Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The very strong electromagnetic fields present in ultraperipheral relativistic heavy ion collisions lead to important higher order effects of the electromagnetic interaction. These multiphoton exchange processes are studied using perturbation theory and the sudden or Glauber approximation. In many important cases, the multi-photon amplitudes factorize into independent single-photon amplitudes. These amplitudes have a common impact parameter vector, which induces correlations between the amplitudes. Impact-parameter dependent equivalent-photon spectra for simultaneous excitation are calculated, as well as, impact-parameter dependent gammagamma-luminosities. Excitations, like the multiphonon giant dipole resonances, vector meson production and multiple e+e- pair production can be treated analytically in a bosonic model, analogous to the emission of soft photons in QED.
