The volume of tubes in Lie groups

The problem of computing the volume of tubes in riemannian manifolds goes back to Weyl and Hotelling. Here we find explicit Taylor series for the volume of a tube in a Lie group equipped with a bi-invariant metric. The coefficients are smooth valuations, given by the convolution powers of the surface area valuation. We show that the tube coefficients can be naturally described as the unique valuations given by universal formulas through the formalism of differential graded Lie and Gerstenhaber algebras; in fact, they are generated by the gauge action on the Maurer--Cartan cone in the free differential graded Lie algebra on one generator. Moreover, we introduce a new convolution product on the corresponding free Gerstenhaber algebra which is compatible with the convolution of valuations and differential forms. To complete the picture, we show that a Lie group -- not necessarily connected -- admits a smooth bi-invariant valuation, beyond the Euler characteristic and the Haar measure, if and only if it admits a bi-invariant riemannian metric.

Operations on constructible functions and generalized valuations

Alesker's theory of generalized valuations unifies smooth measures and constructible functions on real analytic manifolds, extending classical operations on functions and measures. Alesker showed that these operations agree with the sheaf-theoretic ones on constructible functions under restrictive assumptions, leaving key aspects conjectural. In this article, we close this gap by proving that the two approaches indeed coincide on constructible functions under mild transversality assumptions. Our proof is based on a comparison with the corresponding operations on characteristic cycles. As applications, we extend additive kinematic formulas from convex bodies to compact subanalytic sets in Euclidean spaces and derive new kinematic formulas on the 3-sphere.

Invariant valuations on Lie groups

Convolution of valuations was introduced by the first named author and Fu for linear spaces, and later by Alesker and the first named author for compact Lie groups. In this paper we study the convolution of invariant valuations on Lie groups. First, we obtain an explicit formula for the convolution of left-invariant valuations on compact groups in terms of differential forms. Independently, we show that a connected Lie group admits smooth bi-invariant valuations beyond the Euler characteristic and the Haar measure if and only if the group is the product of a compact group and a linear space. Finally, we use these two results to define the convolution of bi-invariant smooth valuations on an arbitrary unimodular Lie group, thus unifying both previously defined convolution operations.

Hard Lefschetz theorem and Hodge-Riemann relations for convex valuations

The algebra of smooth translation-invariant valuations on convex bodies, introduced by S.Alesker in the early 2000s, was in part proved and in part conjectured to satisfy properties formally analogous to those of the cohomology ring of a compact K\"ahler manifold: Poincar\'e duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. Our main result establishes the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations in full generality. As a consequence, we obtain McMullen's quadratic inequalities, which are valid for strongly isomorphic polytopes and known to fail in general, for convex bodies with smooth and strictly positively curved boundary. Our proof is based on elliptic operator theory and on perturbation theory applied to unbounded operators on a natural Hilbert space completion of the space of smooth translation-invariant valuations.

The Weyl tube theorem for K\"ahler manifolds

As sharpened in terms of Alesker's theory of valuations on manifolds, a classic theorem of Weyl asserts that the coefficients of the tube polynomial of an isometrically embedded riemannian manifold $M \hookrightarrow \mathbb R^n$ constitute a canonical finite dimensional subalgebra $\mathcal {L K}(M)$ of the algebra $\mathcal{V} (M)$ of all smooth valuations on $M$, isomorphic to the algebra of valuations on Euclidean space that are invariant under rigid motions. We construct an analogous, larger, canonical subalgebra $\mathcal{KLK}(M)\subset \mathcal{V}(M)$ for K\"ahler manifolds $M$: i) if $\dim M = n $, then $\mathcal{KLK}(M)\simeq \mathrm{Val}^{\mathrm{U}(n)}$, the algebra of valuations on $\mathbb{C}^n$ invariant under the holomorphic isometry group, and ii) if $M\hookrightarrow \tilde M$ is a K\"ahler embedding, then the restriction map $\mathcal{V}(\tilde M) \to \mathcal{V}(M)$ induces a surjection $\mathcal{KLK}(\tilde M)\to \mathcal{KLK}(M)$. This answers a question posed by Alesker in 2010 and gives a structural explanation for some previously known, but mysterious phenomena in hermitian integral geometry.

Curvature Measures of Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds

The Weyl principle is extended from the Riemannian to the pseudo-Riemannian setting, and subsequently to manifolds equipped with generic symmetric $(0,2)$-tensors. More precisely, we construct a family of generalized curvature measures attached to such manifolds, extending the Riemannian Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures introduced by Federer. We then show that they behave naturally under isometric immersions, in particular they do not depend on the ambient signature. Consequently, we extend Theorema Egregium to surfaces equipped with a generic metric of changing signature, and more generally, establish the existence as distributions of intrinsically defined Lipschitz-Killing curvatures for such manifolds of arbitrary dimension. This includes in particular the scalar curvature and the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet integrand. Finally, we deduce a Chern-Gauss-Bonnet theorem for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with generic boundary.

Crofton formulas in pseudo-Riemannian space forms

Crofton formulas on simply-connected Riemannian space forms allow to compute the volumes, or more generally the Lipschitz-Killing curvature integrals of a submanifold with corners, by integrating the Euler characteristic of its intersection with all geodesic submanifolds. We develop a framework of Crofton formulas with distributions replacing measures, which has in its core Alesker's Radon transform on valuations. We then apply this framework, and our recent Hadwiger-type classification, to compute explicit Crofton formulas for all isometry-invariant valuations on all pseudospheres, pseudo-Euclidean and pseudohyperbolic spaces. We find that, in essence, a single measure which depends analytically on the metric, gives rise to all those Crofton formulas through its distributional boundary values at parts of the boundary corresponding to the different indefinite signatures. In particular, the Crofton formulas we obtain are formally independent of signature.

Uniqueness of curvature measures in pseudo-Riemannian geometry

The recently introduced Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds satisfy a Weyl principle, i.e. are invariant under isometric embeddings. We show that they are uniquely characterized by this property. We apply this characterization to prove a Künneth-type formula for Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures, and to classify the invariant generalized valuations and curvature measures on all isotropic pseudo-Riemannian space forms.

Unitarily invariant valuations and Tutte's sequence

We prove Fu's power series conjecture which relates the algebra of isometry invariant valuations on complex space forms to a formal power series from combinatorics which was introduced by Tutte. The $n$-th coefficient of this series is the number of triangulations of a triangle with $3n$ internal edges; or the number of intervals in Tamari's lattice $Y_n$.

Additive kinematic formulas for flag area measures

We show the existence of additive kinematic formulas for general flag area measures, which generalizes a recent result by Wannerer. Building on previous work by the second named author, we introduce an algebraic framework to compute these formulas explicitly. This is carried out in detail in the case of the incomplete flag manifold consisting of all $(p+1)$-planes containing a unit vector.

Flag area measures

A flag area measure on an $n$-dimensional euclidean vector space is a continuous translation-invariant valuation with values in the space of signed measures on the flag manifold consisting of a unit vector $v$ and a $(p+1)$-dimensional linear subspace containing $v$ with $0 \leq p \leq n-1$. Using local parallel sets, Hinderer constructed examples of $\mathrm{SO}(n)$-covariant flag area measures. There is an explicit formula for his flag area measures evaluated on polytopes, which involves the squared cosine of the angle between two subspaces. We construct a more general sequence of smooth $\mathrm{SO}(n)$-covariant flag area measures via integration over the normal cycle of appropriate differential forms. We provide an explicit description of our measures on polytopes, which involves an arbitrary elementary symmetric polynomial in the squared cosines of the principal angles between two subspaces. Moreover, we show that these flag area measures span the space of all smooth $\mathrm{SO}(n)$-covariant flag area measures, which gives a classification result in the spirit of Hadwiger's theorem.

Dual area measures and local additive kinematic formulas

We prove that higher moment maps on area measures of a euclidean vector space are injective, while the kernel of the centroid map equals the image of the first variation map. Based on this, we introduce the space of smooth dual area measures on a finite-dimensional euclidean vector space and prove that it admits a natural convolution product which encodes the local additive kinematic formulas for groups acting transitively on the unit sphere. As an application of this new integral-geometric structure, we obtain the local additive kinematic formulas in hermitian vector spaces in a very explicit way.

Dual curvature measures in hermitian integral geometry

The local kinematic formulas on complex space forms induce the structure of a commutative algebra on the space $\mathrm{Curv}^{\mathrm{U}(n)*}$ of dual unitarily invariant curvature measures. Building on the recent results from integral geometry in complex space forms, we describe this algebra structure explicitly as a polynomial algebra. This is a short way to encode all local kinematic formulas. We then characterize the invariant valuations on complex space forms leaving the space of invariant angular curvature measures fixed.

Valuation theory of indefinite orthogonal groups

Let $\mathrm{SO}^+(p,q)$ denote the identity connected component of the real orthogonal group with signature $(p,q)$. We give a complete description of the spaces of continuous and generalized translation- and $\mathrm{SO}^+(p,q)$-invariant valuations, generalizing Hadwiger's classification of Euclidean isometry-invariant valuations. As a result of independent interest, we identify within the space of translation-invariant valuations the class of Klain-Schneider continuous valuations, which strictly contains all continuous translation-invariant valuations. The operations of pull-back and push-forward by a linear map extend naturally to this class.

Kinematic formulas on the quaternionic plane

We introduce different bases for the vector space of $\mathrm{Sp}(2)\mathrm{Sp}(1)$-invariant, translation invariant continuous valuations on the quaternionic plane and determine a complete set of kinematic formulas.

Valuations and curvature measures on complex spaces

We survey recent results in hermitian integral geometry, i.e. integral geometry on complex vector spaces and complex space forms. We study valuations and curvature measures on complex space forms and describe how the global and local kinematic formulas on such spaces were recently obtained. While the local and global kinematic formulas in the Euclidean case are formally identical, the local formulas in the hermitian case contain strictly more information than the global ones. Even if one is only interested in the flat hermitian case, i.e. $\mathbb C^n$, it is necessary to study the family of all complex space forms, indexed by the holomorphic curvature $4λ$, and the dependence of the formulas on the parameter $λ$. We will also describe Wannerer's recent proof of local additive kinematic formulas for unitarily invariant area measures.

Natural operations on differential forms on contact manifolds

We characterize all natural linear operations between spaces of differential forms on contact manifolds. Our main theorem says roughly that such operations are built from some algebraic operators which we introduce and the exterior derivative.

Convolution of valuations on manifolds

We introduce the new notion of convolution of a (smooth or generalized) valuation on a group $G$ and a valuation on a manifold $M$ acted upon by the group. In the case of a transitive group action, we prove that the spaces of smooth and generalized valuations on $M$ are modules over the algebra of compactly supported generalized valuations on $G$ satisfying some technical condition of tameness. The case of a vector space acting on itself is studied in detail. We prove explicit formulas in this case and show that the new convolution is an extension of the convolution on smooth translation invariant valuations introduced by J.~Fu and the second named author.
