Nonlinear quantum transport of light in a cold atomic cloud

We outline the non-perturbative theory of multiple scattering of resonant, intense laser light off a dilute cloud of cold atoms. A combination of master equation and diagrammatic techniques allows, for the first time, a quantitative description of nonlinear diffusive transport as well as of coherent backscattering of the injected electromagnetic field, notwithstanding the exponential growth of Hilbert space with the number of atomic scatterers. As an exemplary application, we monitor the laser light's intensity profile within the medium, the spectrum of the backscattered light and the coherent backscattering peak's height with increasing pump intensity. Our theory establishes a general, microscopic, scalable approach to nonlinear transport phenomena in complex quantum materials.

Entanglement protection of high-dimensional states by adaptive optics

We study the potential of adaptive optics (AO) to protect entanglement of high-dimensional photonic orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) states against turbulence-induced phase distortions. We demonstrate that AO is able to reduce crosstalk among the OAM modes and, consequently, the entanglement decay as well as photon losses. A test of the AO-stabilized output state against high-dimensional Bell inequalities shows that the transmitted entanglement allows for secure communication, even in the strong scintillation regime.

Coherence turned on by incoherent light

One of the most pertinent problems in the debate on non-trivial quantum effects in biology concerns natural photosynthesis. Since sunlight is composed of thermal photons, it was argued to be unable to induce quantum coherence in matter, and that quantum mechanics is therefore irrelevant for the dynamical processes following photoabsorption. Our present analysis of a toy ``molecular aggregate" -- composed of two dipole-dipole interacting two-level atoms treated as an open quantum system -- however shows that incoherent excitations indeed can trigger coherent dynamics that persist: We demonstrate that collective decay processes induced by the dipole-dipole interaction create coherent intermolecular transport -- regardless of the coherence properties of the incoming radiation. Our analysis shows that the steady state coherence is mediated by the population imbalance between the molecules and, therefore, {\it increases} with the energy difference between the two-level atoms. Our results establish the importance of collective decay processes in the study of ultrafast photophysics, and especially their potential role to generate stationary coherence in incoherently driven quantum transport.

Totally Destructive Interference for Permutation-Symmetric Many-Particle States

Several distinct classes of unitary mode transformations have been known to exhibit the strict suppression of a large set of transmission events, as a consequence of totally destructive many-particle interference. In another work [Dittel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 240404 (2018)] we unite these cases by identifying a general class of unitary matrices which exhibit such interferences. Here, we provide a detailed theoretical analysis that substantially expands on all aspects of this generalisation: We prove the suppression laws put forward in our other paper, establish how they interrelate with forbidden single-particle transitions, show how all suppression laws hitherto known can be retrieved from our general formalism, and discuss striking differences between bosons and fermions. Furthermore, beyond many-particle Fock states on input, we consider arbitrary pure initial states and derive suppression laws which stem from the wave function's permutation symmetry alone. Finally, we identify conditions for totally destructive interference to persist when the involved particles become partially distinguishable.

Totally Destructive Many-Particle Interference

In a general, multi-mode scattering setup, we show how the permutation symmetry of a many-particle input state determines those scattering unitaries which exhibit strictly suppressed many-particle transition events. We formulate purely algebraic suppression laws that identify these events and show that the many-particle interference at their origin is robust under weak disorder and imperfect indistinguishability of the interfering particles. Finally, we demonstrate that all suppression laws so far described in the literature are embedded in the general framework that we here introduce.

Signatures of indistinguishability in bosonic many-body dynamics

The dynamics of bosons in generic multimode systems, such as Bose-Hubbard models, is not only determined by interactions among the particles, but also by their mutual indistinguishability manifested in many-particle interference. We introduce a measure of indistinguishability for Fock states of bosons whose mutual distinguishability is controlled by an internal degree of freedom. We demonstrate how this measure emerges both in the non-interacting and interacting evolution of observables. In particular, we find an unambiguous relationship between our measure and the variance of single-particle observables in the non-interacting limit. A non-vanishing interaction leads to a hierarchy of interaction-induced interference processes, such that even the expectation value of single-particle observables is influenced by the degree of indistinguishability.

On the reduced dynamics of a subset of interacting bosonic particles

The quantum dynamics of a subset of interacting bosons in a subspace of fixed particle number is described in terms of symmetrized many-particle states. A suitable partial trace operation over the von Neumann equation of an $N$-particle system produces a hierarchical expansion for the subdynamics of $M\leq N$ particles. Truncating this hierarchy with a pure product state ansatz yields the general, nonlinear coherent mean-field equation of motion. In the special case of a contact interaction potential, this reproduces the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. To account for incoherent effects on top of the mean-field evolution, we discuss possible extensions towards a second-order perturbation theory that accounts for interaction-induced decoherence in form of a nonlinear Lindblad-type master equation.

Many-particle interference in a two-component bosonic Josephson junction: an all-optical simulation

We conceive an all-optical representation of the dynamics of two distinct types of interacting bosons in a double well by an array of evanescently coupled photonic waveguides. Many-particle interference effects are probed for various interaction strengths by changing the relative abundance of the particle species and can be readily identified by monitoring the propagation of the light intensity across the waveguide array. In particular, we show that finite inter-particle interaction strengths reduce the many-particle interference contrast by dephasing. A general description of the many-particle dynamics for arbitrary initial states is given in terms of two coupled spins by generalising the Schwinger representation to two particle species.

Diffraction-induced entanglement loss of orbital-angular-momentum states

We provide an analytical expression for the entanglement decay of initially maximally entangled orbital angular momentum bi-photon states, when scattered off an obstruction. We show that the decay is controlled by the diffraction-induced mutual overlap between the diffracted field modes, and quantify its dependence on the size and position of the obstruction.

Protecting entanglement of twisted photons by adaptive optics

We study the efficiency of adaptive optics (AO) correction for the free-space propagation of entangled photonic orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) qubit states, to reverse moderate atmospheric turbulence distortions. We show that AO can significantly reduce crosstalk to modes within and outside the encoding subspace and thereby stabilize entanglement against turbulence. This method establishes a reliable quantum channel for OAM photons in turbulence, and enhances the threshold turbulence strength for secure quantum communication at least by a factor two.

The local detection method: Dynamical detection of quantum discord with local operations

Quantum discord in a bipartite system can be dynamically revealed and quantified through purely local operations on one of the two subsystems. To achieve this, the local detection method harnesses the influence of initial correlations on the reduced dynamics of an interacting bipartite system. This article's aim is to provide an accessible introduction to this method and to review recent theoretical and experimental progress.

Local probe of single phonon dynamics in warm ion crystals

The detailed characterization of non-trivial coherence properties of composite quantum systems of increasing size is an indispensable prerequisite for scalable quantum computation, as well as for understanding of nonequilibrium many-body physics. Here we show how autocorrelation functions in an interacting system of phonons as well as the quantum discord between distinct degrees of freedoms can be extracted from a small controllable part of the system. As a benchmark, we show this in chains of up to 42 trapped ions, by tracing a single phonon excitation through interferometric measurements of only a single ion in the chain. We observe the spreading and partial refocusing of the excitation in the chain, even on a background of thermal excitations. We further show how this local observable reflects the dynamical evolution of quantum discord between the electronic state and the vibrational degrees of freedom of the probe ion.

Optimal trapping of monochromatic light in designed photonic multilayer structures

We devise an optimised bi-component multi-layered dielectric stack design to enhance the local irradiance for efficient photovoltaic upconversion materials. The field intensity profile throughout the photonic structure is numerically optimized by appropriate tuning of the individual layers' thicknesses. The optimality of the thus inferred structure is demonstrated by comparison with an analytically derived upper bound. The optimized local irradiance is found to increase exponentially with the number of layers, its rate determined by the permittivity ratio of the two material components. Manufacturing errors which induce deviations from the optimised design are accounted for statistically, and set a finite limit to the achievable enhancement. Notwithstanding, realistic assumptions on manufacturing errors still suggest achievable irradiances which are significantly larger than those obtained with the recently proposed Bragg stack structures.

Scattering Theory of Efficient Quantum Transport across Finite Networks

We present a scattering theory for the efficient transmission of an excitation across a finite network with designed disorder. We show that the presence of randomly positioned networks sites allows to significantly accelerate the excitation transfer processes as compared to a dimer structure, if only the disordered Hamiltonians are constrained to be centrosymmetric, and to exhibit a dominant doublet in their spectrum. We identify the cause of this efficiency enhancement in the constructive interplay between disorder-induced fluctuations of the dominant doublet's splitting and the coupling strength between the input and output sites to the scattering channels. We find that the characteristic strength of these fluctuations together with the channel coupling fully control the transfer efficiency.

Reversed interplay of quantum interference and which-way information in multi-photon entangled states

We report experimental studies of the multi-photon quantum interference of a two-mode three-photon entangled Fock state $|2, 1\rangle$ + $|1, 2\rangle$ impinging on a two-port balanced beam splitter. When the distinguishability between the two input paths is increased, we observe a reduction followed by a resurgence of the quantum interference signal. We ascribe this unusual behavior to the competition among contributions from distinct numbers of interfering photons. Our theoretical analysis shows that this phenomenon will occur for any entangled Fock-state input of the form $|N, M\rangle$ + $|M, N\rangle$ where M, N > 0. Our results are an indication that wave-particle duality may give rise to a wide range of, largely unexplored, phenomena in multi-particle interference.

On optimal currents of indistinguishable particles

We establish a mathematically rigorous, general and quantitative framework to describe currents of non- (or weakly) interacting, indistinguishable particles driven far from equilibrium. We derive tight upper and lower bounds for the achievable fermionic and bosonic steady state current, respectively, which can serve as benchmarks for special cases of interacting many-particle dynamics. For fermionic currents, we identify a symmetry-induced enhancement mechanism in parameter regimes where the coupling between system and reservoirs is weak. This mechanism is broadly applicable provided the inter-particle interaction strength is small as compared to typical exchange interactions.

Measuring correlations of cold atom systems using multiple quantum probes

We present a non-destructive method to probe a complex quantum system using multiple impurity atoms as quantum probes. Our protocol provides access to different equilibrium properties of the system by changing its coupling to the probes. In particular, we show that measurements with two probes reveal the system's non-local two-point density correlations, for probe-system contact interactions. We illustrate our findings with analytic and numerical calculations for the Bose-Hubbard model in the weakly and strongly-interacting regimes, under conditions relevant to ongoing experiments in cold atom systems.
