Four-Photon (In)Distinguishability Transition

We demonstrate the conspiration of many-particle interferences of different degree to determine the transmission of four photons of tunable indistinguishability through a four-port beam splitter array. The probability of certain output events depends non-monotonically on the degree of distinguishability, due to distinct multi-particle interference contributions to the transmission signal.

Matter-Wave Imaging of Quantum Density Fluctuations in Ultracold Bosons in an Optical Lattice

We study the influence of quantum density fluctuations in ultracold atoms in an optical lattice on the scattering of matter waves. Such fluctuations are characteristic of the superfluid phase and vanish due to increased interactions in the Mott insulating phase. We employ an analytical treatment of the scattering and demonstrate that the fluctuations lead to incoherent processes, which we propose to observe via decoherence of the fringes in a Mach-Zender interferometer. In this way we extract the purely coherent part of the scattering. Further, we show that the quantum density fluctuations can also be observed directly in the differential angular scattering cross section for an atomic beam scattered from the atoms in a lattice. Here we find an explicit dependence of the scale of the inelastic scattering on the quantum density fluctuations.

Quantum correlations in the two-photon decay of few-electron ions

A theoretical study of the polarization entanglement of two photons emitted in the decay of metastable ionic states is performed within the framework of density matrix theory and second-order perturbative approach. Particular attention is paid to relativistic and non-dipole effects that become important for medium- and high-$Z$ ions. To analyze these effects, the degree of entanglement is evaluated both in the dipole approximation and within the rigorous relativistic theory. Detailed calculations are performed for the two-photon $2s_{1/2}\to 1s_{1/2}$ transition in hydrogen-like, as well as for the $1s_{1/2}\, 2s_{1/2} \; {}^1S_0 \to 1s_{1/2}^2 \; {}^1S_0$, $1s_{1/2} \, 2s_{1/2} \; {}^3S_1\to 1s_{1/2}^2 \; {}^1S_0$ and $1s_{1/2} \, 2p_{1/2} \; {}^3P_0\to 1s_{1/2}^2 \; {}^1S_0$ transitions in helium-like ions.

Entanglement dynamics in open two-qubit systems via diffusive quantum trajectories

We use quantum diffusive trajectories to prove that the time evolution of two-qubit entanglement under spontaneous emission can be fully characterized by optimal continuous monitoring. We analytically determine this optimal unraveling and derive a deterministic evolution equation for the system's concurrence. Furthermore, we propose an experiment to monitor the entanglement dynamics in bipartite two-level systems and to determine the disentanglement time from a single trajectory.

Efficient and coherent excitation transfer across disordered molecular networks

We show that finite-size, disordered molecular networks can mediate highly efficient, coherent excitation transfer which is robust against ambient dephasing and associated with strong multi-site entanglement. Such optimal, random molecular conformations may explain efficient energy transfer in the photosynthetic FMO complex.

Number-conserving master equation theory for a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

We describe the transition of $N$ weakly interacting atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate within a number-conserving quantum master equation theory. Based on the separation of time scales for condensate formation and non-condensate thermalization, we derive a master equation for the condensate subsystem in the presence of the non-condensate environment under the inclusion of all two body interaction processes. We numerically monitor the condensate particle number distribution during condensate formation, and derive a condition under which the unique equilibrium steady state of a dilute, weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate is given by a Gibbs-Boltzmann thermal state of $N$ non-interacting atoms.

Zero-Transmission Law for Multiport Beam Splitters

The Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is generalized to a configuration of n bosons prepared in the n input ports of a Bell multiport beam splitter. We derive a strict suppression law for most possible output events, consistent with a generic bosonic behavior after suitable coarse graining.

Double scattering of intense laser light by two atoms

This paper analyzes coherent backscattering of intense laser light by two randomly placed distant atoms. Starting from the general two-atom master equation, we analytically derive the elastic and inelastic background and interference components of the double scattering spectrum. By expressing the final results in terms of single-atom observables, the two-atom problem is shown to be equivalent to a description in terms of single atoms under bichromatic driving.

Optimal dynamical control of many-body entanglement

The preparation of highly entangled many-body systems is one of the central challenges of both basic and applied science. The complexity of interparticle interaction and environment coupling increases rapidly with the number of to-be-entangled subsystems, rendering the requirements on the control of many-body quantum systems ever more restrictive. We propose an approach that allows to derive optimal control Hamiltonians in a purely algebraic fashion. These drive a composite quantum system rapidly into that highly entangled state which can be created most efficiently for a given interaction mechanism, and which bears entanglement that is robust against decoherence.

Equation of motion for entanglement

We review an evolution equation for quantum entanglement for 2x2 dimensional quantum systems, the smallest system that can exhibit entanglement, and extend it to higher dimensional systems. Furthermore, we provide statistical evidence for the equation's applicability to the experimentally relevant domain of weakly mixed states.

Detection and typicality of bound entangled states

We derive an explicit analytic estimate for the entanglement of a large class of bipartite quantum states which extends into bound entanglement regions. This is done by using an efficiently computable concurrence lower bound, which is further employed to numerically construct a volume of $3 \times 3$ bound entangled states.

Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice: A perturbation approach

We derive closed analytical expressions for the order parameter $Φ(x)$ and for the chemical potential $μ$ of a Bose-Einstein Condensate loaded into a harmonically confined, one dimensional optical lattice, for sufficiently weak, repulsive or attractive interaction, and not too strong laser intensities. Our results are compared with exact numerical calculations in order to map out the range of validity of the perturbative analytical approach. We identify parameter values where the optical lattice compensates the interaction-induced nonlinearity, such that the condensate ground state coincides with a simple, single particle harmonic oscillator wave function.

Scalability of GHZ and random-state entanglement in the presence of decoherence

We derive analytical upper bounds for the entanglement of generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states coupled to locally depolarizing and dephasing environments, and for local thermal baths of arbitrary temperature. These bounds apply for any convex quantifier of entanglement, and exponential entanglement decay with the number of constituent particles is found. The bounds are tight for depolarizing and dephasing channels. We also show that randomly generated initial states tend to violate these bounds, and that this discrepancy grows with the number of particles.

Thermal non-equilibrium effects in quantum reflection

We show that the quantum reflection coefficient of ultracold heavy atoms scattering off a dielectric surface can be tuned in a wide range by suitable choice of surface and environment temperatures. This effect results from a temperature dependent long-range repulsive part of the van der Waals-Casimir-Polder-Lifshitz atom-surface interaction potential.
