On left invariant CR structures on SU(2)

There is a well known one--parameter family of left invariant CR structures on $SU(2)\cong S^3$. We show how purely algebraic methods can be used to explicitly compute the canonical Cartan connections associated to these structures and their curvatures. We also obtain explicit descriptions of tractor bundles and tractor connections.

Prolongations of Geometric Overdetermined Systems

We show that a wide class of geometrically defined overdetermined semilinear partial differential equations may be explicitly prolonged to obtain closed systems. As a consequence, in the case of linear equations we extract sharp bounds on the dimension of the solution space.

Infinitesimal Automorphisms and Deformations of Parabolic Geometries

We show that infinitesimal automorphisms and infinitesimal deformations of parabolic geometries can be nicely described in terms of the twisted de-Rham sequence associated to a certain linear connection on the adjoint tractor bundle. For regular normal geometries, this description can be related to the underlying geometric structure using the machinery of BGG sequences. In the locally flat case, this leads to a deformation complex, which generalizes the is well know complex for locally conformally flat manifolds. Recently, a theory of subcomplexes in BGG sequences has been developed. This applies to certain types of torsion free parabolic geometries including, quaternionic structures, quaternionic contact structures and CR structures. We show that for these structures one of the subcomplexes in the adjoint BGG sequence leads (even in the curved case) to a complex governing deformations in the subcategory of torsion free geometries. For quaternionic structures, this deformation complex is elliptic.

Subcomplexes in Curved BGG-Sequences

BGG-sequences offer a uniform construction for invariant differential operators for a large class of geometric structures called parabolic geometries. For locally flat geometries, the resulting sequences are complexes, but in general the compositions of the operators in such a sequence are nonzero. In this paper, we show that under appropriate torsion freeness and/or semi-flatness assumptions certain parts of all BGG sequences are complexes. Several examples of structures, including quaternionic structures, hypersurface type CR structures and quaternionic contact structures are discussed in detail. In the case of quaternionic structures we show that several families of complexes obtained in this way are elliptic.

On the Geometry of Chains

The chains studied in this paper generalize Chern-Moser chains for CR structures. They form a distinguished family of one dimensional submanifolds in manifolds endowed with a parabolic contact structure. Both the parabolic contact structure and the system of chains can be equivalently encoded as Cartan geometries (of different types). The aim of this paper is to study the relation between these two Cartan geometries for Lagrangean contact structures and partially integrable almost CR structures. We develop a general method for extending Cartan geometries which generalizes the Cartan geometry interpretation of Fefferman's construction of a conformal structure associated to a CR structure. For the two structures in question, we show that the Cartan geometry associated to the family of chains can be obtained in that way if and only if the original parabolic contact structure is torsion free. In particular, the procedure works exactly on the subclass of (integrable) CR structures. This tight relation between the two Cartan geometries leads to an explicit description of the Cartan curvature associated to the family of chains. On the one hand, this shows that the homogeneous models for the two parabolic contact structures give rise to examples of non-flat path geometries with large automorphism groups. On the other hand, we show that one may (almost) reconstruct the underlying torsion free parabolic contact structure from the Cartan curvature associated to the chains. In particular, this leads to a very conceptual proof of the fact that chain preserving contact diffeomorphisms are either isomorphisms or anti-isomorphisms of parabolic contact structures.

Two constructions with parabolic geometries

This is an expanded version of a series of lectures delivered at the 25th Winter School ``Geometry and Physics'' in Srni. After a short introduction to Cartan geometries and parabolic geometries, we give a detailed description of the equivalence between parabolic geometries and underlying geometric structures. The second part of the paper is devoted to constructions which relate parabolic geometries of different type. First we discuss the construction of correspondence spaces and twistor spaces, which is related to nested parabolic subgroups in the same semisimple Lie group. An example related to twistor theory for Grassmannian structures and the geometry of second order ODE's is discussed in detail. In the last part, we discuss analogs of the Fefferman construction, which relate geometries corresponding different semisimple Lie groups.

Correspondence spaces and twistor spaces for parabolic geometries

For a semisimple Lie group $G$ with parabolic subgroups $Q\subset P\subset G$, we associate to a parabolic geometry of type $(G,P)$ on a smooth manifold $N$ the correspondence space $\Cal CN$, which is the total space of a fiber bundle over $N$ with fiber a generalized flag manifold, and construct a canonical parabolic geometry of type $(G,Q)$ on $\Cal CN$. Conversely, for a parabolic geometry of type $(G,Q)$ on a smooth manifold $M$, we construct a distribution corresponding to $P$, and find the exact conditions for its integrability. If these conditions are satisfied, then we define the twistor space $N$ as a local leaf space of the corresponding foliation. We find equivalent conditions for the existence of a parabolic geometry of type $(G,P)$ on the twistor space $N$ such that $M$ is locally isomorphic to the correspondence space $\Cal CN$, thus obtaining a complete local characterization of correspondence spaces. We show that all these constructions preserve the subclass of normal parabolic geometries (which are determined by some underlying geometric structure) and that in the regular normal case, all characterizations can be expressed in terms of the harmonic curvature of the Cartan connection, which is easier to handle. Several examples and applications are discussed.

On Distinguished Curves in Parabolic Geometries

All parabolic geometries, i.e. Cartan geometries with homogeneous model a real generalized flag manifold, admit highly interesting classes of distinguished curves. The geodesics of a projective class of connections on a manifold, conformal circles on conformal Riemannian manifolds, and Chern--Moser chains on CR--manifolds of hypersurface type are typical examples. We show that such distinguished curves are always determined by a finite jet in one point, and study the properties of such jets. We also discuss the question when distinguished curves agree up to reparametrization and discuss the distinguished parametrizations in this case. We give a complete description of all distinguished curves for some examples of parabolic geometries.

Standard Tractors and the Conformal Ambient Metric Construction

In this paper we relate the Fefferman-Graham ambient metric construction for conformal manifolds to the approach to conformal geometry via the canonical Cartan connection. We show that from any ambient metric that satisfies a weakening of the usual normalisation condition, one can construct the conformal standard tractor bundle and the normal standard tractor connection, which are equivalent to the Cartan bundle and the Cartan connection. This result is applied to obtain a procedure to get tractor formulae for all conformal invariants that can be obtained from the ambient metric construction. We also get information on ambient metrics which are Ricci flat to higher order than guaranteed by the results of Fefferman-Graham.

Some Special Geometry in Dimension Six

We generalise the notion of contact manifold by allowing the contact distribution to have codimension two. There are special features in dimension six. In particular, we show that the complex structure on a three-dimensional complex contact manifold is determined solely by the underlying contact distribution.

Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand sequences

This paper is devoted to the study of geometric structures modeled on homogeneous spaces G/P, where G is a real or complex semisimple Lie group and $P\subset G$ is a parabolic subgroup. We use methods from differential geometry and very elementary finite-dimensional representation theory to construct sequences of invariant differential operators for such geometries, both in the smooth and the holomorphic category. For G simple, these sequences specialize on the homogeneous model G/P to the celebrated (generalized) Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolutions in the holomorphic category, while in the smooth category we get smooth analogs of these resolutions. In the case of geometries locally isomorphic to the homogeneous model, we still get resolutions, whose cohomology is explicitly related to a twisted de Rham cohomology. In the general (curved) case we get distinguished curved analogs of all the invariant differential operators occurring in Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolutions (and their smooth analogs). On the way to these results, a significant part of the general theory of geometrical structures of the type described above is presented here for the first time.

Weyl structures for parabolic geometries

Motivated by the rich geometry of conformal Riemannian manifolds and by the recent development of geometries modeled on homogeneous spaces $G/P$ with $G$ semisimple and $P$ parabolic, Weyl structures and preferred connections are introduced in this general framework. In particular, we extend the notions of scales, closed and exact Weyl connections, and Rho--tensors, we characterize the classes of such objects, and we use the results to give a new description of the Cartan bundles and connections for all parabolic geometries.

Invariant operators on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures, III. Standard operators

This paper demonstrates the power of the calculus developed in the two previous parts of the series for all real forms of the almost Hermitian symmetric structures on smooth manifolds, including e.g. conformal Riemannian and almost quaternionic geometries. Exploiting some finite dimensional representation theory of simple Lie algebras, we give explicit formulae for distinguished invariant curved analogues of the standard operators in terms of the linear connections belonging to the structures in question, so in particular we prove their existence. Moreover, we prove that these formulae for k-th order standard operators, k=1,2,..., are universal for all geometries in question.

Invariant operators on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures, I. Invariant differentiation

This is the first part of a series of papers. The whole series aims to develop the tools for the study of all almost Hermitian symmetric structures in a unified way. In particular, methods for the construction of invariant operators, their classification and the study of their properties will be worked out. In this paper we present the invariant differentiation with respect to a Cartan connection and we expand the differentials in the terms of the underlying linear connections belonging to the structures in question. Then we discuss the holonomic and non-holonomic jet extensions and we suggest methods for the construction of invariant operators.

Invariant operators on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures, II. Normal Cartan connections

In the first part of this series of papers we developed the invariant differentiation with respect to a Cartan connection, we described this procedure in the terms of the underlying principal connections, and we discussed applications of this theory to the construction of natural operators. In this part we will extend the results of \cite{Ochiai, 70} on the existence and the uniqueness of the so called normal Cartan connections on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures to first order structures which do not admit a torsion free linear connection. Moreover, for each of these structures we obtain explicit (universal) formulae for these canonical connections in the terms of the curvatures of the underlying linear connections.

On multilinear operators commuting with Lie derivatives

Let $E_1,\dots ,E_k$ and $E$ be natural vector bundles defined over the category $\Cal Mf_m^+$ of smooth oriented $m$--dimensional manifolds and orientation preserving local diffeomorphisms, with $m\geq 2$. Let $M$ be an object of $\Cal Mf_m^+$ which is connected. We give a complete classification of all separately continuous $k$--linear operators $D\:\Ga _c(E_1M)\x\dots\x\Ga_c(E_kM)\to \Ga (EM)$ defined on sections with compact supports, which commute with Lie derivatives, iė\. which satisfy $$ \Cal L_X(D(s_1,\dots ,s_k))=\sum _{i=1}^kD(s_1,\dots ,\Cal L_Xs_i,\dots,s_k), $$ for all vector fields $X$ on $M$ and sections $s_j\in\Ga_c(E_jM)$, in terms of local natural operators and absolutely invariant sections. In special cases we do not need the continuity assumption. We also present several applications in concrete geometrical situations, in particular we give a completely algebraic characterization of some well known Lie brackets.

Towards the Chern-Weil homomormism in non-commutative differential geometry

In this short review article we sketch some developments which should ultimately lead to the analogy of the Chern-Weil homomorphism for principal bundles in the realm of non-commutative differential geometry. Principal bundles there should have Hopf algebras as structure `cogroups'. Since the usual machinery of Lie algebras, connection forms, etc\., just is not available in this setting, we base our approach on the Frölicher--Nijenhuis bracket.
