Random field approximation and local counting statistics for the weakly interacting thermal Bose gas

We study weakly interacting bosons on the three-dimensional torus at temperatures proportional to the critical temperature for Bose--Einstein condensation. We show that, as the expected particle number tends to infinity, the grand canonical Gibbs state is asymptotically described by the coherent state quantization of a random field that converges to a novel Bogoliubov random field. Moreover, the point process associated with the Gibbs state can be approximated by a Cox process. These results are based on and extend the approximation of the Gibbs state recently obtained by the first two authors and Nam. Using these approximations, we compute limiting distributions of the number of particles outside the condensate, the joint occupation statistics of finitely many momentum modes, and particle-number fluctuations in macroscopic subsets of the torus, all governed by the Bogoliubov field. We further prove convergence of the empirical measure of the associated point process to the uniform measure and convergence of the microscopic particle-number statistics to the boson point process. The latter result establishes the universality of particle-number statistics on microscopic length scales.

Dynamics and equilibrium states of infinite systems of lattice bosons

We consider the dynamics of systems of lattice bosons with infinitely many degrees of freedom. We show that their dynamics defines a group of automorphisms on a $C^*$--algebra introduced by Buchholz, which extends the resolvent algebra of local field operators. For states that admit uniform bounds on moments of the local particle number, we derive propagation bounds of Lieb--Robinson type. Using these bounds, we show that the dynamics of local observables gives rise to a strongly continuous unitary group in the GNS representation. Moreover, accumulation points of finite-volume Gibbs states satisfy the KMS condition with respect to this group. This, in particular, proves the existence of KMS states.

A new upper bound on the specific free energy of dilute Bose gases

We prove an upper bound for the free energy (per unit volume) of the dilute Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit, showing that the free energy at density $ρ$ and inverse temperature $β$ differs from that of the non-interacting system by the correction term $4 π\frak{a} (2 ρ^2 - [ρ- ρ_{\textsf{c}}(β)]^2_+ )$. Here, $\frak{a}$ denotes the scattering length of the interaction potential, $ρ_{\textsf{c}}(β)$ the critical density for Bose-Einstein condensation of the non-interacting gas and $[\cdot]_+=\max\{0,\cdot\}$. This result was previously established by Yin in [37]. Our proof applies to a broader class of interaction potentials, yields a better rate, and we believe it has potential for further extensions.

The Gibbs state of the mean-field Bose gas

We consider the homogeneous mean-field Bose gas at temperatures proportional to the critical temperature of its Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition. We prove a trace norm approximation for the grand canonical Gibbs state in terms of a reference state, which is given by a convex combination of products of coherent states and Gibbs states associated with certain temperature-dependent Bogoliubov Hamiltonians. The convex combination is expressed as an integral over a Gibbs distribution of a one-mode $Φ^4$-theory describing the condensate. This result justifies an analogue of Lee and Yang's extension of Bogoliubov theory to positive temperatures, and it allows us to derive various limiting distributions for the number of particles in the condensate, as well as precise formulas for the one- and two-particle density matrices of the Gibbs state. Key ingredients of our proof, which are of independent interest, include two novel abstract correlation inequalities. The proof of one of them is based on an application of an infinite-dimensional version of Stahl's theorem.

A note on spontaneous symmetry breaking in the mean-field Bose gas

We consider the homogeneous Bose gas in the three-dimensional unit torus, where $N$ particles interact via a two-body potential of the form $N^{-1} v(x)$. The system is studied at inverse temperatures of order $N^{-2/3}$, which corresponds to the temperature scale of the Bose--Einstein condensation phase transition. We show that spontaneous $U(1)$ symmetry breaking occurs if and only if the system exhibits Bose--Einstein condensation in the sense that the one-particle density matrix of the Gibbs state has a macroscopic eigenvalue.

Upper bound for the grand canonical free energy of the Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit for general interaction potentials

We consider a homogeneous Bose gas in the Gross--Pitaevskii limit at temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature for Bose--Einstein condensation. Recently, an upper bound for the grand canonical free energy was proved in arXiv:2305.19173 [math-ph] capturing two novel contributions. First, the free energy of the interacting condensate is given in terms of an effective theory describing the probability distribution of the number of condensed particles. Second, the free energy of the thermally excited particles equals that of a temperature-dependent Bogoliubov Hamiltonian. We extend this result to a more general class of interaction potentials, including interactions with a hard core. Our proof follows a different approach than the one in arXiv:2305.19173 [math-ph]: we model microscopic correlations between the particles by a Jastrow factor, and exploit a cancellation in the computation of the energy that emerges due to the different length scales in the system.

Upper bound for the grand canonical free energy of the Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit

We consider a homogeneous Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit at temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation in the ideal gas. Our main result is an upper bound for the grand canonical free energy in terms of two new contributions: (a) the free energy of the interacting condensate is given in terms of an effective theory describing its particle number fluctuations, (b) the free energy of the thermally excited particles equals that of a temperature-dependent Bogoliubov Hamiltonian.

Microscopic Derivation of Ginzburg-Landau Theory and the BCS Critical Temperature Shift in General External Fields

We consider the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) free energy functional with weak and macroscopic external electric and magnetic fields and derive the Ginzburg-Landau functional. We also provide an asymptotic formula for the BCS critical temperature as a function of the external fields. This extends our previous results in arXiv:2105.05623 for the constant magnetic field to general magnetic fields with a nonzero magnetic flux through the unit cell.

Microscopic Derivation of Ginzburg-Landau Theory and the BCS Critical Temperature Shift in a Weak Homogeneous Magnetic Field

Starting from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) free energy functional, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau functional in the presence of a weak homogeneous magnetic field. We also provide an asymptotic formula for the BCS critical temperature as a function of the magnetic field. This extends the previous works arXiv:1102.4001 and arXiv:1410.2352 of Frank, Hainzl, Seiringer and Solovej to the case of external magnetic fields with non-vanishing magnetic flux through the unit cell.

Dynamics of mean-field bosons at positive temperature

We study the time evolution of an initially trapped weakly interacting Bose gas at positive temperature, after the trapping potential has been switched off. It has been recently shown in arXiv:2009.00992 that the one-particle density matrix of Gibbs states of the interacting trapped gas is given, to leading order in $N$, as $N \to \infty$, by the one of the ideal gas, with the condensate wave function replaced by the minimizer of the Hartree energy functional. We show that this structure is stable with respect to the many-body evolution in the following sense: the dynamics can be approximated in terms of the time-dependent Hartree equation for the condensate wave function and in terms of the free evolution for the thermally excited particles. The main technical novelty of our work is the use of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations to define a fluctuation dynamics.

Semiclassical approximation and critical temperature shift for weakly interacting trapped bosons

We consider a system of N trapped bosons with repulsive interactions in a combined semiclassical mean-field limit at positive temperature. We show that the free energy is well approximated by the minimum of the Hartree free energy functional - a natural extension of the Hartree energy functional to positive temperatures. The Hartree free energy functional converges in the same limit to a semiclassical free energy functional, and we show that the system displays Bose-Einstein condensation if and only if it occurs in the semiclassical free energy functional. This allows us to show that for weak coupling the critical temperature decreases due to the repulsive interactions.

The free energy of the two-dimensional dilute Bose gas. I. Lower bound

We prove a lower bound for the free energy (per unit volume) of the two-dimensional Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the free energy at density $ρ$ and inverse temperature $β$ differs from the one of the non-interacting system by the correction term $4 πρ^2 |\ln a^2 ρ|^{-1} (2 - [1 - β_{\mathrm{c}}/β]_+^2)$. Here $a$ is the scattering length of the interaction potential, $[\cdot]_+ = \max\{ 0, \cdot \}$ and $β_{\mathrm{c}}$ is the inverse Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless critical temperature for superfluidity. The result is valid in the dilute limit $a^2ρ\ll 1$ and if $βρ\gtrsim 1$.

Gross-Pitaevskii Limit of a Homogeneous Bose Gas at Positive Temperature

We consider a dilute, homogeneous Bose gas at positive temperature. The system is investigated in the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) limit, where the scattering length $a$ is so small that the interaction energy is of the same order of magnitude as the spectral gap of the Laplacian, and for temperatures that are comparable to the critical temperature of the ideal gas. We show that the difference between the specific free energy of the interacting system and the one of the ideal gas is to leading order given by $4 πa \left( 2 \varrho^2 - \varrho_0^2 \right)$. Here $\varrho$ denotes the density of the system and $\varrho_0$ is the expected condensate density of the ideal gas. Additionally, we show that the one-particle density matrix of any approximate minimizer of the Gibbs free energy functional is to leading order given by the one of the ideal gas. This in particular proves Bose-Einstein condensation with critical temperature given by the one of the ideal gas to leading order. One key ingredient of our proof is a novel use of the Gibbs variational principle that goes hand in hand with the c-number substitution.

Intermolecular forces and correlations mediated by a phonon bath

Inspired by the possibility to experimentally manipulate and enhance chemical reactivity in helium nanodroplets, we investigate the effective interaction and the resulting correlations between two diatomic molecules immersed in a bath of bosons. By analogy with the bipolaron, we introduce the \emph{biangulon} quasiparticle describing two rotating molecules that align with respect to each other due to the effective attractive interaction mediated by the excitations of the bath. We study this system in different parameter regimes and apply several theoretical approaches to describe its properties. Using a Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we investigate the dependence of the effective intermolecular interaction on the rotational state of the two molecules. In the strong-coupling regime, a product-state ansatz shows that the molecules tend to have a strong alignment in the ground state. To investigate the system in the weak-coupling regime, we apply a one-phonon excitation variational ansatz, which allows us to access the energy spectrum. In comparison to the angulon quasiparticle, the biangulon shows shifted angulon instabilities and an additional spectral instability, where resonant angular momentum transfer between the molecules and the bath takes place. These features are proposed as an experimentally observable signature for the formation of the biangulon quasiparticle. Finally, by using products of single angulon and bare impurity wave functions as basis states, we introduce a diagonalization scheme that allows us to describe the transition from two separated angulons to a biangulon as a function of the distance between the two molecules.

Theory of the Rotating Polaron: Spectrum and Self-Localization

We study a quantum impurity possessing both translational and internal rotational degrees of freedom interacting with a bosonic bath. Such a system corresponds to a `rotating polaron', which can be used to model, e.g., a rotating molecule immersed in an ultracold Bose gas or superfluid Helium. We derive the Hamiltonian of the rotating polaron and study its spectrum in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes using a combination of variational, diagrammatic, and mean-field approaches. We reveal how the coupling between linear and angular momenta affects stable quasiparticle states, and demonstrate that internal rotation leads to an enhanced self-localization in the translational degrees of freedom.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Dilute, Trapped Gas at Positive Temperature

We consider an interacting, dilute Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential at a positive temperature. The system is analyzed in a combination of a thermodynamic and a Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) limit where the trap frequency $ω$, the temperature $T$ and the particle number $N$ are related by $N \sim (T / ω)^{3} \to\infty$ while the scattering length is so small that the interaction energy per particle around the center of the trap is of the same order of magnitude as the spectral gap in the trap. We prove that the difference between the canonical free energy of the interacting gas and the one of the noninteracting system can be obtained by minimizing the GP energy functional. We also prove Bose-Einstein condensation in the following sense: The one-particle density matrix of any approximate minimizer of the canonical free energy functional is to leading order given by that of the noninteracting gas but with the free condensate wavefunction replaced by the GP minimizer.
