Diagonal Antiferromagnetic Easy Axis in Lightly Hole Doped Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2Cu_3O_6

Hole induced changes in the antiferromagnetic structure of a lightly Ca doped Gd:Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2Cu_3O_6 copper oxide single crystal with x~0.008 is investigated by Gd3+ electron spin resonance. Holes do not localize to Ca2+ ions above 2.5 K since the charge distribution and spin susceptibility next to the Ca2+ are independent of temperature. Both hole doped and pristine crystals are magnetically twinned with an external magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic domain structure. Unlike the undoped crystal, where the easy magnetic axis is along [100] at all temperatures, the easy direction in the hole doped crystal is along the [110] diagonal at low temperatures and changes gradually to the [100] direction between 10 K and 100 K. The transition is tentatively attributed to a magnetic anisotropy introduced by hole ordering.

Direct Observation and Anisotropy of the Contribution of Gap nodes in the Low Temperature Specific Heat of YBa_2Cu_3O_7

The specific heat due to line nodes in the superconducting gap of YBa2Cu3O7 has been obscured up to now by magnetic terms of extrinsic origin, even for high quality crystals. We report the specific heat of a new single crystal grown in a non-corrosive BaZrO3 crucible, for which paramagnetic terms are reduced to less than one spin-1/2 center for 20'000 Cu atoms. The contribution of line nodes shows up directly in the difference C(B,T) - C(0,T) at fixed temperatures (T < 5 K) as a function of the magnetic field parallel to the c-axis (B<=14 T). These data illustrate the smooth crossover from C propotional to T^2 at low fields to C propotional to TB^1/2 at high fields, and provide new values for gap parameters which are quantitatively consistent with tunneling spectroscopy and thermal conductivity in the framework of dx^2-y^2 pairing symmetry. Data for B along the nodal and antinodal directions in the ab-plane are also provided. The in-plane anisotropy predicted in the clean limit is not observed.

Pseudogap and Superconducting Gap in Y-123: A Raman Study

We present results of electronic Raman-scattering experiments in differently doped Y-123. In B2g symmetry, an analysis of the data in terms of a memory function approach is presented and dynamical relaxation rates $Γ(ω,T)$ and mass-enhancement factors $1+λ(ω,T)$ for the carriers are obtained. Starting from temperatures T > 180K, $Γ(ω,T)$ and $1+λ(ω,T)$ are extrapolated to lower temperatures and used to re-calculate Raman spectra. By comparison with our data, we find a loss of spectral weight between Tc < T < T* at all doping levels x. T* is comparable to the pseudogap temperature found in other experiments. Below Tc, the superconducting gap is observed. It depends on x and scales with Tc whereas the energy scale of the pseudogap remains the same.

Hole depletion and localization due to disorder in insulating PrBa2Cu3O7-d: a Compton scattering study

The (mostly) insulating behaviour of PrBa2Cu3O7-d is still unexplained and even more interesting since the occasional appearance of superconductivity in this material. Since YBa2Cu3O7-d is nominally iso-structural and always superconducting, we have measured the electron momentum density in these materials. We find that they differ in a striking way, the wavefunction coherence length in PrBa2Cu3O7-d being strongly suppressed. We conclude that Pr on Ba-site substitution disorder is responsible for the metal-insulator transition. Preliminary efforts at growth with a method to prevent disorder yield 90K superconducting PrBa2Cu3O7-d crystallites.

Experimental evidence for fast cluster formation of chain oxygen vacancies in YBa2Cu3O7-d being at the origin of the fishtail anomaly

We report on three different and complementary measurements, namely magnetisation measurements, positron annihilation spectroscopy and NMR measurements, which give evidence that the formation of oxygen vacancy clusters is on the origin of the fishtail anomaly in YBa2Cu3O7-d. While in the case of YBa2Cu3O7.0 the anomaly is intrinsically absent, it can be suppressed in the optimally doped state where vacancies are present. We therefore conclude that the single vacancies or point defects can not be responsible for this anomaly but that clusters of oxygen vacancies are on its origin.
