Interaction between Rydberg Excitons in Cuprous Oxide Revealed through Resonant Second Harmonic Generation

We report experimental and theoretical investigations of interacting excitons of the yellow series in cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) with principal quantum numbers up to by means of second harmonic generation (SHG). Using picosecond pulsed laser excitation up to 10 GW/cm$^2$ peak intensity we observe a pronounced change of the spectra with increasing pump laser intensity: an energetic shift to lower absolute energies and a spectral broadening. The absolute intensities of the spectral lines scale for low powers with the square of the pump power, but saturates at higher powers. At still higher powers the SHG intensity is actually reduced. To explain these results quantitively, we developed a semi-classical theory of resonant SHG where the process of SHG is fully coherent. The excitons are assumed to be bosons interacting by a distance dependent potential giving rise to both the changes in spectral line shape and the saturation by a $\it{Rydberg}$ blockade. The concomitant measurement of two-photon absorption allows to derive quantitative values for the exciton-exciton interaction. While the results agree in order of magnitude with those calculated by state-of-the art atomic-like van der Waals interaction theory, the scaling with principle quantum number is quite different. As a possible screening by an electron-hole plasma created by three-photon absorption into blue and violet band states could be ruled out, our results point toward fundamental differences between excitons and atoms.

Polarization- and time-resolved nonlinear multi-photon spectroscopy for confocal microscopy of semiconductor nanostructures

We present a versatile confocal microscopy setup for optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and multi-photon spectroscopy that enables polarization-resolved studies of semiconductor bulk crystals and low-dimensional structures. The system offers full polarization control in both excitation and detection, spatial scanning with micrometer resolution, and spectrally tunable excitation over a broad energy range from 0.5 to 4.0 eV, using femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses. Samples are mounted in a helium-flow cryostat, allowing temperature control from 4 to 300 K. Magnetic fields up to 0.625 T can be applied in the Voigt geometry via an electromagnet. The nonlinear optical signals are analyzed using a high-resolution spectrometer with a spectral resolution of 60 $μ$eV. We demonstrate the potential of the setup by means of SHG polarization tomography measurements on a Cu$_2$O crystal as well as through a SHG spectral scan of a ZnSe crystal over a wide energy range from 1.4 to 3.1 eV. Polarization-resolved confocal SHG mapping of various twisted mono- and bilayer MoS$_2$ structures is also presented. In addition, time-resolved two-color pump-probe experiments are shown for a Cs$_2$AgBiBr$_6$ crystal, illustrating the potential of the system for investigating coherent exciton and phonon dynamics.

Interaction between Rydberg Excitons in Cuprous Oxide Revealed through Second Harmonic Generation

We report experimental and theoretical investigations of interacting excitons of the yellow series in cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) with principal quantum numbers up to $n=7$ by means of second harmonic generation (SHG). Using picosecond pulsed laser excitation up to 10 GW/cm$^2$ peak intensity we observe a pronounced change of the spectra with increasing pump laser intensity: an energetic shift to lower absolute energies and a spectral broadening, while the absolute intensity for low powers scales with the square of the pump power, but saturates at higher powers. Concomitant with SHG we determined the density of the excitons excited by the ps pulse by measuring the two-photon absorption directly. This allows to derive quantitative values for the exciton-exciton interaction. Surprisingly, the results disagree both in magnitude and scaling with principal quantum number with those calculated by state-of-the art atomic-like van der Waals interaction theory. As a possible screening by an electron-hole plasma created by three-photon absorption into blue and violet band states could be ruled out, our results point toward fundamental differences between excitons and atoms.

Exchange interaction in the yellow exciton series of cuprous oxide

We experimentally and numerically investigate the exchange interaction of the yellow excitons in cuprous oxide. By varying the material parameters in the numerical calculations, we can interpret experimental findings and understand their origin in the complex band structure and central-cell corrections. In particular, we experimentally observe the reversal of the ortho- and paraexciton for the $2S$ yellow exciton, and explain this phenomenon by an avoided crossing with the green $1S$ orthoexciton in a detailed numerical analysis. Furthermore, we discuss the exchange splitting as a function of the principal quantum number $n$ and its deviation from the $n^{-3}$ behavior expected from a hydrogenlike model. We also explain why the observed exchange splitting of the green $1S$ exciton is more than twice the splitting of the yellow $1S$ state.

Optical second and third harmonic generation on excitons in ZnSe/BeTe quantum wells

Optical harmonic generation on excitons is found in ZnSe/BeTe quantum wells with type-II band alignment. Two experimental approaches with spectrally-broad femtosecond laser pulses and spectrally-narrow picosecond pulses are used for spectroscopic studies by means of second and third harmonic generation (SHG and THG). The SHG signal is symmetry-forbidden for light propagation along the structure's growth axis, which is the [001] crystal axis, but can be induced by an external magnetic field. The THG signal is detected at zero magnetic field and its intensity is field independent. A group theory analysis of SHG and THG rotational anisotropy diagrams allows us to identify the involved excitation mechanisms.

Second Harmonic Generation of cuprous oxide in magnetic fields

Recently Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) for the yellow exciton series in cuprous oxide has been demonstrated [J. Mund et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 085203 (2018)]. Assuming perfect $O_{\mathrm{h}}$ symmetry, SHG is forbidden along certain high-symmetry axes. Perturbations can break this symmetry and forbidden transitions may become allowed. We investigate theoretically the effect of external magnetic fields on the yellow exciton lines of cuprous oxide. We identify two mechanisms by which an applied magnetic field can induce a second harmonic signal in a forbidden direction. First of all, a magnetic field by itself generally lifts the selection rules. In the Voigt configuration, an additional magneto-Stark electric field appears. This also induces certain SHG processes differing from those induced by the magnetic field alone. Complementary to the manuscript by A. Farenbruch et al. [Phys. Rev. B, submitted], we perform a full numerical diagonalization of the exciton Hamiltonian including the complex valence band structure. Numerical results are compared with experimental data.
