Comment on "Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics with Minimal Length Uncertainty"

We demonstrate that the recent paper by Jana and Roy entitled ''Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics with minimal length uncertainty'' [SIGMA 5 (2009), 083, 7 pages, arXiv:0908.1755] contains various misconceptions. We compare with an analysis on the same topic carried out previously in our manuscript [arXiv:0907.5354]. In particular, we show that the metric operators computed for the deformed non-Hermitian Swanson models differs in both cases and is inconsistent in the former.

Minimal length in Quantum Mechanics and non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems

Deformations of the canonical commutation relations lead to non-Hermitian momentum and position operators and therefore almost inevitably to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We demonstrate that such type of deformed quantum mechanical systems may be treated in a similar framework as quasi/pseudo and/or PT-symmetric systems, which have recently attracted much attention. For a newly proposed deformation of exponential type we compute the minimal uncertainty and minimal length, which are essential in almost all approaches to quantum gravity.

From real fields to complex Calogero particles

We provide a novel procedure to obtain complex PT-symmetric multi-particle Calogero systems. Instead of extending or deforming real Calogero systems, we explore here the possibilities for complex systems to arise from real nonlinear field equations. We exemplify this procedure for the Boussinesq equation and demonstrate how singularities in real valued wave solutions can be interpreted as N complex particles scattering amongst each other. We analyze this phenomenon in more detail for the two and three particle case. Particular attention is paid to the implemention of PT-symmetry for the complex multi particle systems. New complex PT-symmetric Calogero systems together with their classical solutions are derived.

A spin chain model with non-Hermitian interaction: The Ising quantum spin chain in an imaginary field

We investigate a lattice version of the Yang-Lee model which is characterized by a non-Hermitian quantum spin chain Hamiltonian. We propose a new way to implement PT-symmetry on the lattice, which serves to guarantee the reality of the spectrum in certain regions of values of the coupling constants. In that region of unbroken PT-symmetry we construct a Dyson map, a metric operator and find the Hermitian counterpart of the Hamiltonian for small values of the number of sites, both exactly and perturbatively. Besides the standard perturbation theory about the Hermitian part of the Hamiltonian, we also carry out an expansion in the second coupling constant of the model. Our constructions turns out to be unique with the sole assumption that the Dyson map is Hermitian. Finally we compute the magnetization of the chain in the z and x direction.

Particles versus fields in PT-symmetrically deformed integrable systems

We review some recent results on how PT-symmetry, that is a simultaneous time-reversal and parity transformation, can be used to construct new integrable models. Some complex valued multi-particle systems, such as deformations of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models, are shown to arise naturally from real valued field equations of non-linear integrable systems. Deformations of complex non-linear integrable field equations, some of them even allowing for compacton solutions, are also investigated. The integrabilty of various systems is established by means of the Painleve test

Compactons versus Solitons

We investigate whether the recently proposed PT-symmetric extensions of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations admit genuine soliton solutions besides compacton solitary waves. For models which admit stable compactons having a width which is independent of their amplitude and those which possess unstable compacton solutions the Painleve test fails, such that no soliton solutions can be found. The Painleve test is passed for models allowing for compacton solutions whose width is determined by their amplitude. Consequently these models admit soliton solutions in addition to compactons and are integrable.

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of Lie algebraic type

We analyse a class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which can be expressed bilinearly in terms of generators of a sl(2,R)-Lie algebra or their isomorphic su(1,1)-counterparts. The Hamlitonians are prototypes for solvable models of Lie algebraic type. Demanding a real spectrum and the existence of a well defined metric, we systematically investigate the constraints these requirements impose on the coupling constants of the model and the parameters in the metric operator. We compute isospectral Hermitian counterparts for some of the original non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Alternatively we employ a generalized Bogoliubov transformation, which allows to compute explicitly real energy eigenvalue spectra for these type of Hamiltonians, together with their eigenstates. We compare the two approaches.

Integrable models from PT-symmetric deformations

We address the question of whether integrable models allow for PT-symmetric deformations which preserve their intgrability. For this purpose we carry out the Painleve test for PT-symmetric deformations of Burgers and the Korteweg-De Vries equation. We find that the former equation allows for infinitely many deformations which pass the Painleve test. For a specific deformation we prove the convergence of the Painleve expansion and thus establish the Painleve property for these models, which are therefore thought to be integrable. The Korteweg-De Vries equation does not allow for deformations which pass the Painleve test in complete generality, but we are able to construct a defective Painleve expansion.

PT-symmetric extensions of the supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation

We discuss several PT-symmetric deformations of superderivatives. Based on these various possibilities, we propose new families of complex PT-symmetric deformations of the supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. Some of these new models are mere fermionic extensions of the former in the sense that they are formulated in terms of superspace valued superfields containing bosonic and fermionic fields, breaking however the supersymmetry invariance. Nonetheless, we also find extensions, which may be viewed as new supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. Moreover, we show that these deformations allow for a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian formulation and construct three charges associated to the corresponding flow.

PT-symmetric deformations of Calogero models

We demonstrate that Coxeter groups allow for complex PT-symmetric deformations across the boundaries of all Weyl chambers. We compute the explicit deformations for the A_2 and G_2-Coxeter group and apply these constructions to Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models invariant under the extended Coxeter groups. The eigenspecta for the deformed models are real and contain the spectra of the undeformed case as subsystem.

The quantum brachistochrone problem for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Recently Bender, Brody, Jones and Meister found that in the quantum brachistochrone problem the passage time needed for the evolution of certain initial states into specified final states can be made arbitrarily small, when the time-evolution operator is taken to be non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric. Here we demonstrate that such phenomena can also be obtained for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians for which PT-symmetry is completely broken, i.e. dissipative systems. We observe that the effect of a tunable passage time can be achieved by projecting between orthogonal eigenstates by means of a time-evolution operator associated to a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. It is not essential that this Hamiltonian is PT-symmetric.

PT-symmetry and Integrability

We briefly explain some simple arguments based on pseudo Hermiticity, supersymmetry and PT-symmetry which explain the reality of the spectrum of some non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Subsequently we employ PT-symmetry as a guiding principle to construct deformations of some integrable systems, the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland model and the Korteweg deVries equation. Some properties of these models are discussed.

Metrics and isospectral partners for the most generic cubic PT-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

We investigate properties of the most general PT-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of cubic order in the annihilation and creation operators as a ten parameter family. For various choices of the parameters we systematically construct an exact expression for a metric operator and an isospectral Hermitian counterpart in the same similarity class by exploiting the isomorphism between operator and Moyal products. We elaborate on the subtleties of this approach. For special choices of the ten parameters the Hamiltonian reduces to various models previously studied, such as to the complex cubic potential, the so-called Swanson Hamiltonian or the transformed version of the from below unbounded quartic -x^4-potential. In addition, it also reduces to various models not considered in the present context, namely the single site lattice Reggeon model and a transformed version of the massive sextic x^6-potential, which plays an important role as a toy modelto identify theories with vanishing cosmological constant.

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues coupled to electric fields: from the time-independent to the time dependent quantum mechanical formulation

We provide a reviewlike introduction into the quantum mechanical formalism related to non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems with real eigenvalues. Starting with the time-independent framework we explain how to determine an appropriate domain of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and pay particular attention to the role played by PT-symmetry and pseudo-Hermiticity. We discuss the time-evolution of such systems having in particular the question in mind of how to couple consistently an electric field to pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We illustrate the general formalism with three explicit examples: i) the generalized Swanson Hamiltonians, which constitute non-Hermitian extensions of anharmonic oscillators, ii) the spiked harmonic oscillator, which exhibits explicit supersymmetry and iii) the -x^4-potential, which serves as a toy model for the quantum field theoretical phi^4-theory.

PT-symmetric Deformations of the Korteweg-de Vries Equation

We propose a new family of complex PT-symmetric extensions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The deformed equations can be associated to a sequence of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. The first charges related to the conservation of mass, momentum and energy are constructed. We investigate solitary wave solutions of the equation of motion for various boundary conditions.

Isospectral Hamiltonians from Moyal products

Recently Scholtz and Geyer proposed a very efficient method to compute metric operators for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians from Moyal products. We develop these ideas further and suggest to use a more symmetrical definition for the Moyal products, because they lead to simpler differential equations. In addition, we demonstrate how to use this approach to determine the Hermitian counterpart for a Pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We illustrate our suggestions with the explicitly solvable example of the -x^4-potential and the ubiquitous harmonic oscillator in a complex cubic potential.

Time evolution of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems

We provide time-evolution operators, gauge transformations and a perturbative treatment for non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems, which are explicitly time-dependent. We determine various new equivalence pairs for Hermitian and non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which are therefore pseudo-Hermitian and in addition in some cases also invariant under PT-symmetry. In particular, for the harmonic oscillator perturbed by a cubic non-Hermitian term, we evaluate explicitly various transition amplitudes, for the situation when these systems are exposed to a monochromatic linearly polarized electric field.

A note on the integrability of non-Hermitian extensions of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models

We consider non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric extensions of Calogero models, which have been proposed by Basu-Mallick and Kundu for two types of Lie algebras. We address the question of whether these extensions are meaningful for all remaining Lie algebras (Coxeter groups) and if in addition one may extend the models beyond the rational case to trigonometric, hyperbolic and elliptic models. We find that all these new models remain integrable, albeit for the non-rational potentials one requires additional terms in the extension in order to compensate for the breaking of integrability.
