Machine Learning on Heterogeneous, Edge, and Quantum Hardware for Particle Physics (ML-HEQUPP)

The next generation of particle physics experiments will face a new era of challenges in data acquisition, due to unprecedented data rates and volumes along with extreme environments and operational constraints. Harnessing this data for scientific discovery demands real-time inference and decision-making, intelligent data reduction, and efficient processing architectures beyond current capabilities. Crucial to the success of this experimental paradigm are several emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), silicon microelectronics, and the advent of quantum algorithms and processing. Their intersection includes areas of research such as low-power and low-latency devices for edge computing, heterogeneous accelerator systems, reconfigurable hardware, novel codesign and synthesis strategies, readout for cryogenic or high-radiation environments, and analog computing. This white paper presents a community-driven vision to identify and prioritize research and development opportunities in hardware-based ML systems and corresponding physics applications, contributing towards a successful transition to the new data frontier of fundamental science.

Track clustering with a quantum annealer for primary vertex reconstruction at hadron colliders

Clustering of charged particle tracks along the beam axis is the first step in reconstructing the positions of hadronic interactions, also known as primary vertices, at hadron collider experiments. We use a 2036 physical qubit D-Wave quantum annealer to perform track clustering in a limited capacity on artificial events where the positions of primary vertices and tracks resemble those measured by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The algorithm, which is not a classical-quantum hybrid but relies entirely on quantum annealing, is tested on a variety of event topologies. We demonstrate a deterministic graph-embedding of the problem on the D-Wave Chimera architecture, a method for optimizing the coupling strengths within logical qubits, and a method for optimizing annealing time. Further, we benchmark it against simulated annealing on a commercial CPU constrained to the same processor time per anneal as the physical annealer. We note a quantum advantage against simulated annealing up to a 56 logical qubit problem that involves 665 physical qubits on average. Our embedding and optimization methods, and the benchmarking paradigm, can be applied generally to other clustering problems on quantum annealers. This algorithm may be used as a building-block for more sophisticated algorithms to reach the number of primary vertices at the LHC.

A scalable approach to undergraduate research in physics

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) increase students' access to research. This lesson plan describes an interdisciplinary CURE developed to be able to involve over 60 students per semester in original research using data from large particle physics experiments and telescopes, although the methods described can easily be adopted by other areas of data science. Students are divided into research teams of four, which greatly leverages the instruction time needed for mentoring, while increasing research productivity by creating accountability amongst the students. This CURE provides a strong framework, which minimizes barriers that students may perceive. This helps increase the number of students that benefit from a research opportunity while providing guidance and certainty. Through this CURE, students can engage in original research with the potential for publication-quality results, develop communication skills in various modes, and gain confidence in their performance as a scientist.

Subspaces of frequently hypercyclic functions for sequences of composition operators

In this paper, a criterion for a sequence of composition operators defined on the space of holomorphic functions in a complex domain to be frequently hypercyclic is provided. Such criterion improves some already known special cases and, in addition, it is also valid to provide dense vector subspaces as well as large closed ones consisting entirely, except for zero, of functions that are frequently hypercyclic.

Simultaneous universality

In this paper, the notion of simultaneous universality is introduced, concerning operators having orbits that simultaneously approximate any given vector. This notion is related to the well known concepts of universality and disjoint universality. Several criteria are provided, and several applications to specific operators or sequences of operators are performed, mainly in the setting of sequence spaces or spaces of holomorphic functions.

Universality of Composition Operators and Applications to Holomorphic Dynamics

By investigating which level of universality composition operators $C_f$ can have, where the symbol $f$ is given by the restriction of a transcendental entire function to suitable parts of the Fatou set of $f$, this work combines the theory of dynamics of continuous linear operators on spaces of holomorphic functions with the theory of non-linear complex dynamics on the complex plane.

Kinematics of Top Quark Final States: A Snowmass White Paper

This is the summary report of the Top Quark Kinematics working group prepared for Snowmass 2013. We survey the current state of theoretical predictions for top pair differential distributions, in both boosted and un-boosted regimes, and present an overview of uncertainties and prospects for top spin correlations. We study the prospects for measuring the inclusive SM top pair production asymmetry AFC at LHC 14 as a function of systematic error, and show that some improvement over current systematic uncertainties, as customarily handled, is required for observing a SM-size asymmetry. Cuts on top pair invariant mass and rapidity do not substantially alter this conclusion. We summarize the conclusions of contributed studies on alternate LHC measurements of the ttbar production asymmetry, in ttbar+jet final states and in forward top production at LHCb, both of which show good prospects for observing SM-size asymmetries in 50 fb-1 of data at LHC14.
