Review: The FLAG working group

The FLAG working group reviews lattice results relevant for pion and kaon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics phenomenology community. The set of quantities considered so far comprises light quark masses, kaon and pion form factors, the kaon mixing parameter, and low energy constants of SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R and SU(3)_L X SU(3)_R chiral perturbation theory.

Calculation of the pion electromagnetic form factor from lattice QCD

We present a lattice calculation of the vector form factor of the pion for two flavours of non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions. For the measurements we utilise the CLS ensembles which include various lattice spacings and pion masses down to about 250 MeV. To obtain a fine momentum resolution near zero momentum transfer (q^2) partially twisted boundary conditions are employed using several twist angles. Due to the fine resolution around q^2=0 we are able to determine the slope of the form factor and, in turn, extract the charge radius of the pion without any model dependence. The results for the form factor and the charge radius are then compared to chiral perturbation theory and phenomenological models which are used to extrapolate the results to the physical point.

Review of lattice results concerning low energy particle physics

We review lattice results relevant for pion and kaon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. Specifically, we review the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f_+(0), relevant for the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer as well as the ratio f_K/f_pi of decay constants and discuss the consequences for the elements V_{us} and V_{ud} of the CKM matrix. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)_LxSU(2)_R and SU(3)_LxSU(3)_R Chiral Perturbation Theory and review the determination of the B_K parameter of neutral kaon mixing. We introduce quality criteria and use these when forming averages. Although subjective and imperfect, these criteria may help the reader to judge different aspects of current lattice computations. Our main results are summarized in section 1.2, but we stress the importance of the detailed discussion that underlies these results and constitutes the bulk of the present review.

Lattice cutoff effects for F_Ds with improved Wilson fermions - a final lesson from the quenched case

In view of the recent excitement about a tension between determinations of f_Ds from experiment and from simulations of lattice QCD with dynamical quarks, we try to clear up the picture of lattice determinations in the continuum limit of the quenched approximation. For O(a) improved Wilson quarks we see linear scaling in the squared lattice spacing a^2 only for a<~0.08fm. For coarser lattices we observe significant contaminations from higher order cutoff effects. As an aside we also study the scaling of the charm quark mass and the ratio of the vector to the pseudo-scalar decay constant and the spin-splitting.

The leading hadronic vacuum polarisation on the lattice

After discussing the relevance of a first principles theory-prediction of the hadronic vacuum polarisation for Standard Model tests, the theoretical challenges for its computation in lattice QCD are reviewed. New ideas that will potentially improve the quality of lattice simulations will be introduced and the status of ongoing simulations will be presented briefly.

Quark disconnected diagrams in chiral perturbation theory

We show how quark-disconnected and quark-connected contributions to hadronic n-point functions can be written as independent correlators for which one can derive expressions in partially quenched chiral effective theory. As an example we apply the idea to the case of the hadronic vacuum polarisation. In particular, we consider the cases of the Nf = 2 theory without and with a partially quenched strange quark and also the Nf = 2 + 1 theory. In the latter two cases a parameter-free prediction for the disconnected contribution at NLO in the effective theory is given. Finally we show how twisted boundary conditions can then be used in lattice QCD to improve the q^2 resolution in the connected contributions even when flavour singlet operators are considered.

New ideas for g-2 on the lattice

Using iso-spin symmetry the quark-connected and disconnected contributions to the hadronic vacuum polarisation in a theory with N_f=2 flavours can be described as independent correlation functions, respectively. We show how this allows to use twisted boundary conditions for the connected contribution in order to improve the q^2-resolution in lattice QCD. Furthermore we derive an exact relation between the connected and the disconnected contributions at NLO in chiral perturbation theory. We discuss extensions to theories with more than 2 dynamical flavours.

Heavy-strange meson decay constants in the continuum limit of quenched QCD

We improve a previous quenched result for heavy-light pseudoscalar meson decay constants with the light quark taken to be the strange quark. A finer lattice resolution (a ~ 0.05 fm) in the continuum limit extrapolation of the data computed in the static approximation is included. We also give further details concerning the techniques used in order to keep the statistical and systematic errors at large lattice sizes L/a under control. Our final result, obtained by combining these data with determinations of the decay constant for pseudoscalar mesons around the D_s, follows nicely the qualitative expectation of the 1/m-expansion with a (relative) 1/m-term of about -0.5 GeV/m_PS. At the physical b-quark mass we obtain F_{B_s} = 193(7) MeV, where all errors apart from the quenched approximation are included.

Progress in kaon physics on the lattice

CKM-unitarity, direct and indirect CP-violation and the ΔI=1/2 rule in full lattice QCD are the focus of this talk. To this end I will discuss and compare recent lattice results for leptonic, semi-leptonic and non-leptonic decays of the kaon and neutral kaon mixing and I will motivate current best estimates f_K/f_π=1.198(10), f_+^{Kπ}(0)=0.964(5) and \hat{B}_K=0.720(39). Moreover new theoretical advances that will improve the quality of these computations in the future will be discussed.

High-accuracy scaling exponents in the local potential approximation

We test equivalences between different realisations of Wilson's renormalisation group by computing the leading, subleading, and anti-symmetric corrections-to-scaling exponents, and the full fixed point potential for the Ising universality class to leading order in a derivative expansion. We discuss our methods with a special emphasis on accuracy and reliability. We establish numerical equivalence of Wilson-Polchinski flows and optimised renormalisation group flows with an unprecedented accuracy in the scaling exponents. Our results are contrasted with high-accuracy findings from Dyson's hierarchical model, where a tiny but systematic difference in all scaling exponents is established. Further applications for our numerical methods are briefly indicated.

Partially Twisted Boundary Conditions in Lattice Simulations

We use chiral perturbation theory to investigate twisted and partially twisted boundary conditions which allow access to momenta other than integer multiples of 2pi/L on a lattice with spatial volume L^3. For K -> pi pi decays we show that the breaking of isospin symmetry by the twisted boundary conditions implies that the amplitudes cannot be determined in general. We find numerical evidence for the result that the finite volume effects of the boundary conditions are exponentially suppressed for quantities without final state interactions (meson masses and meson-to-vacuum matrix elements) in a simulation with partial twisting on a sea of N_f=2 non-perturbatively improved Wilson quarks.

Precision Lattice Computations in the Heavy Quark Sector

The phenomenology of the pseudo scalar mesons D_s and B_s and of the vector mesons D_s* and B_s* was investigated in simulations of quenched lattice QCD. The work is particularly focused on the continuum limit and the minimisation of all systematic errors within the quenched approximation. The decay constants F_Ds and F_Ds* and the difference in the masses between the D_s and the D_s* were determined from the direct computer simulation of lattice QCD in large physical volume (L ~ 1.5 fm). As an aside, the renormalisation group invariant charm quark mass M_c could be obtained from the simulation results. For the B_s- and the B_s*-meson, an interpolation in the meson mass to its physical point was carried out for the decay constant and the mass splitting in the continuum limit. The functional form of the interpolation to the static limit was guided by the prediction of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET). A set of conversion functions between HQET and QCD were derived and evaluated numerically with input from perturbation theory.

Non-perturbative tests of Heavy Quark Effective Theory

We consider QCD with one massless quark and one heavy quark in a finite volume of linear extent L_0 ~ 0.2 fm. In this situation, HQET represents an expansion in terms of 1/z=1/(m L_0), which we test by a non-perturbative computation of quenched current matrix elements and energies, taking the continuum limit of lattice results. These are seen to approach the corresponding renormalization group invariant matrix elements of the static effective theory as the quark mass becomes large. We are able to obtain estimates of the size of the 1/m-corrections to the static theory, which are also of practical relevance in our recent strategy to implement HQET non-perturbatively by matching to QCD in a finite volume.

Non-perturbative tests of HQET in small-volume quenched QCD

We quantitatively investigate the quark mass dependence of current matrix elements and energies, calculated over a wide range of quark masses in the continuum limit of small-volume quenched lattice QCD. By a precise comparison of these observables as functions of the heavy quark mass with the predictions of HQET we are able to verify that their large quark mass behaviour is described by the effective theory.

Precision computation of the leptonic D_s-meson decay constant in quenched QCD

We summarize a computation of the leptonic decay constant f_D_s of the D_s-meson in quenched QCD on the lattice. We perform a direct simulation at the masses of the strange and the charm quarks at four different lattice spacings from approximately 0.1 fm to 0.05 fm. Fully non perturbative O(a)-improvement is employed. After taking the continuum limit we arrive at a value of f_D_s=252(9) MeV, when setting the scale with the Kaon decay constant f_K=160 MeV. Setting the scale with the nucleon mass instead leads to a decrease of about 20 MeV of f_D_s.

A precise determination of the decay constant of the Ds-meson in quenched QCD

We present a lattice determination of the leptonic decay constant F_Ds of the Ds-meson using its mass and F_K as experimental input. Setting the scale with F_K=160 MeV, our final result is F_Ds = 252(9) MeV. The error contains all uncertainties apart from the quenched approximation. Setting the scale with the nucleon mass instead leads to an increase of 3(1) MeV of the leptonic decay constant which might indicate a small quenching error.
