The Rabin cryptosystem over number fields

We extend Rabin's cryptosystem to general number fields. We show that decryption of a random plaintext is as hard as the integer factorisation problem, provided the modulus in our scheme has been chosen carefully. We investigate the performance of our new cryptosystem in comparison with the classical Rabin scheme and a more recent version over the Gaussian integers.

RSA+: An RSA variant

We introduce a new probabilistic public-key cryptosystem which combines the main ingredients of the well-known RSA and Rabin cryptosystems. We investigate the security and performance of our new scheme in comparison to the other two.

On natural complexes in Iwasawa theory

We consider two natural complexes that appear in recent formulations of equivariant Iwasawa main conjectures for extensions of not necessarily totally real fields. We show that both complexes are isomorphic in the derived category of Iwasawa modules if the weak Leopoldt conjecture holds for the relevant $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension.

On $k$-free numbers in cyclotomic fields: entropy, symmetries and topological invariants

Point sets of number-theoretic origin, such as the visible lattice points or the $k$-th power free integers, have interesting geometric and spectral properties and give rise to topological dynamical systems that belong to a large class of subshifts with positive topological entropy. Among them are $\cB$-free systems in one dimension and their higher-dimensional generalisations, most prominently the $k$-free integers in algebraic number fields. Here, we extend previous work on quadratic fields to the class of cyclotomic fields. In particular, we discuss their entropy and extended symmetries, with special focus on the interplay between dynamical and number-theoretic notions.

Integrality of Stickelberger elements and annihilation of natural Galois modules

To each Galois extension $L/K$ of number fields with Galois group $G$ and each integer $r \leq 0$ one can associate Stickelberger elements in the centre of the rational group ring $\mathbb{Q}[G]$ in terms of values of Artin $L$-series at $r$. We show that the denominators of their coefficients are bounded by the cardinality of the commutator subgroup $G'$ of $G$ whenever $G$ is nilpotent. Moreover, we show that, after multiplication by $|G'|$ and away from $2$-primary parts, they annihilate the class group of $L$ if $r=0$ and higher Quillen $K$-groups of the ring of integers in $L$ if $r<0$. This generalizes recent progress on conjectures of Brumer and of Coates and Sinnott from abelian to nilpotent extensions. For arbitrary $G$ we show that the denominators remain bounded along the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower of $L$ for every odd prime $p$. This allows us to give an affirmative answer to a question of Greenberg and of Gross on the behaviour of $p$-adic Artin $L$-series at zero.

Power-free points in quadratic number fields: Stabiliser, dynamics and entropy

The sets of $k$-free integers in general quadratic number fields are studied, with special emphasis on (extended) symmetries and their impact on the topological dynamical systems induced by such integers. We establish correspondences between number-theoretic and dynamical quantities, and use symmetries and entropy to distinguish the systems.

On the $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture and the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture

Let $E/K$ be a finite Galois extension of totally real number fields with Galois group $G$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $r>1$ be an odd integer. The $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture relates the values at $s=r$ of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions attached to the irreducible characters of $G$ to those of corresponding complex Artin $L$-functions. We show that this conjecture, the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and a conjecture of Schneider imply the `$p$-part' of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(E))(r), \mathbb Z[G])$. If $r>1$ is even we obtain a similar result for Galois CM-extensions after restriction to `minus parts'.

The strong Stark conjecture for totally odd characters

We prove the $p$-part of the strong Stark conjecture for every totally odd character and every odd prime $p$. Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois CM-extension with Galois group $G$, which has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup for an odd prime $p$. We give an unconditional proof of the minus $p$-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(L)), \mathbb{Z}[G])$ under certain restrictions on the ramification behavior in $L/K$.

Number-theoretic positive entropy shifts with small centraliser and large normaliser

Higher-dimensional binary shifts of number-theoretic origin with positive topological entropy are considered. We are particularly interested in analysing their symmetries and extended symmetries. They form groups, known as the topological centraliser and normaliser of the shift dynamical system, which are natural topological invariants. Here, our focus is on shift spaces with trivial centralisers, but large normalisers. In particular, we discuss several systems where the normaliser is an infinite extension of the centraliser, including the visible lattice points and the $k$-free integers in some real quadratic number fields.

An unconditional proof of the abelian equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and applications

Let $p$ be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for every admissible one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension whose Galois group has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of any $\mu$-invariant. As applications, we deduce the Coates-Sinnott conjecture away from its $2$-primary part and new cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Tate motives.

On the p-adic Stark conjecture at s=1 and applications

Let E/F be a finite Galois extension of totally real number fields and let p be a prime. The `p-adic Stark conjecture at s=1' relates the leading terms at s=1 of p-adic Artin L-functions to those of the complex Artin L-functions attached to E/F. We prove this conjecture unconditionally when E/Q is abelian. We also show that for certain non-abelian extensions E/F the p-adic Stark conjecture at s=1 is implied by Leopoldt's conjecture for E at p. Moreover, we prove that for a fixed prime p, the p-adic Stark conjecture at s=1 for E/F implies Stark's conjecture at s=1 for E/F. This leads to a `prime-by-prime' descent theorem for the `equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture' (ETNC) for Tate motives at s=1. As an application of these results, we provide strong new evidence for special cases of the ETNC for Tate motives and the closely related `leading term conjectures' at s=0 and s=1.

Annihilating wild kernels

Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and $r>1$ be an integer. Assuming a conjecture of Schneider, we formulate a conjecture that relates special values of equivariant Artin $L$-series at $s=r$ to the compact support cohomology of the étale $p$-adic sheaf $\mathbb Z_p(r)$. We show that our conjecture is essentially equivalent to the $p$-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the pair $(h^0(\mathrm{Spec}(L))(r), \mathbb Z[G])$. We derive from this explicit constraints on the Galois module structure of Banaszak's $p$-adic wild kernels.

A generalization of a theorem of Swan with applications to Iwasawa theory

Let $p$ be a prime and let $G$ be a finite group. By a celebrated theorem of Swan, two finitely generated projective $\mathbb Z_p[G]$-modules $P$ and $P'$ are isomorphic if and only if $\mathbb Q_p \otimes_{\mathbb Z_p} P$ and $\mathbb Q_p \otimes_{\mathbb Z_p} P'$ are isomorphic as $\mathbb Q_p[G]$-modules. We prove an Iwasawa-theoretic analogue of this result and apply this to the Iwasawa theory of local and global fields. We thereby determine the structure of natural Iwasawa modules up to (pseudo-)isomorphism.

Notes on noncommutative Fitting invariants

To each finitely presented module $M$ over a commutative ring $R$ one can associate an $R$-ideal $\mathrm{Fitt}_{R}(M)$, which is called the (zeroth) Fitting ideal of $M$ over $R$. This is of interest because it is always contained in the $R$-annihilator $\mathrm{Ann}_{R}(M)$ of $M$, but is often much easier to compute. This notion has recently been generalised to that of so-called `Fitting invariants' over certain noncommutative rings; the present author considered the case in which $R$ is an $\mathfrak{o}$-order $Λ$ in a finite dimensional separable algebra, where $\mathfrak{o}$ is an integrally closed commutative noetherian complete local domain. This article is a survey of known results and open problems in this context. In particular, we investigate the behaviour of Fitting invariants under direct sums. In the appendix, we present a new approach to Fitting invariants via Morita equivalence.

On the non-abelian Brumer-Stark conjecture and the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture

We show that for an odd prime p, the p-primary parts of refinements of the (imprimitive) non-abelian Brumer and Brumer-Stark conjectures are implied by the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture (EIMC) for totally real fields. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of the relevant Iwasawa mu-invariant. In combination with the authors' previous work on the EIMC, this leads to unconditional proofs of the non-abelian Brumer and Brumer-Stark conjectures in many new cases.

An equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for local fields

Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of $p$-adic fields and let $L_{\infty}$ be the unramified $\mathbb Z_p$-extension of $L$. Then $L_{\infty}/K$ is a one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension. In the spirit of the main conjectures of equivariant Iwasawa theory, we formulate a conjecture which relates the equivariant local epsilon constants attached to the finite Galois intermediate extensions $M/K$ of $L_{\infty}/K$ to a natural arithmetic invariant arising from the étale cohomology of the constant sheaf $\mathbb Q_p/\mathbb Z_p$ on the spectrum of $L_{\infty}$. We give strong evidence of the conjecture including a full proof in the case that $L/K$ is at most tamely ramified.

Conjectures of Brumer, Gross and Stark

We give an introduction to generalisations of conjectures of Brumer and Stark on the annihilator of the class group of a number field. We review the relation to the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture, the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields, and a conjecture of Gross on the behaviour of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions at zero.

On formal groups and Tate cohomology in local fields

Let $L/K$ be a Galois extension of local fields of characteristic $0$ with Galois group $G$. If $\mathcal{F}$ is a formal group over the ring of integers in $K$, one can associate to $\mathcal F$ and each positive integer $n$ a $G$-module $F_L^n$ which as a set is the $n$-th power of the maximal ideal of the ring of integers in $L$. We give explicit necessary and sufficient conditions under which $F_L^n$ is a cohomologically trivial $G$-module. This has applications to elliptic curves over local fields and to ray class groups of number fields.
