Radon Emanation from Dust of Varying Composition and Size

$^{222}Rn$ emanating from environmental dust constitutes an important background component for many low-energy, low-rate experiments. Radon emanation rates from dust and rock, thus, are important for experiment planning. In this paper, we report measured radon emanation fractions for five types of dry dust differing in grain size and composition. These data were obtained by a novel technique in $γ$-spectroscopy, measuring emanated and non-emanated $^{222}Rn$ progeny activities as well as the the parent $^{226}$Ra activity in a time series. The range of observed radon emanation fractions is $(3.7 \pm 2.0)\%$ to $(16.2 \pm 0.9)\%$. Four of the five samples are standardized samples available commercially, so additional investigations of these samples may be readily carried out.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Calibrations and backgrounds for dark matter direct detection

Future dark matter direct detection experiments will reach unprecedented levels of sensitivity. Achieving this sensitivity will require more precise models of signal and background rates in future detectors. Improving the precision of signal and background modeling goes hand-in-hand with novel calibration techniques that can probe rare processes and lower threshold detector response. The goal of this white paper is to outline community needs to meet the background and calibration requirements of next-generation dark matter direct detection experiments.

Sensitivity analysis towards trace-uranium detection with $γ$-$γ$ coincidence NAA

We present an improved approach for detection of trace amounts of $^{238}$U by means of neutron activation analysis (NAA). The analysis enhancement is obtained by utilizing $γ$-$γ$ coincidence counting. An empirical method for evaluating the sensitivity gain in the presence of a large source-related background is presented. A comparison of detection limits is made between two counting schemes; namely, counting single gammas using one HPGe detector versus counting coincident gammas using two HPGe detectors placed face-to-face. A data-validated radiation transport model, created in GEANT4 for a single HPGe detector, is extended to handle the two-detector setup. In this counting scheme, a $^{238}$U-detection sensitivity enhancement of about a factor of 8 is predicted for a sample of Saint-Gobain G3 Sapphire when compared to the simpler singles counting approach.

A New Method for Evaluating the Effectiveness of Plastic Packaging Against Radon Penetration

Deposition of $^{222}Rn$ daughters onto detector materials pose a risk to ultra-low background experiments. To mitigate this risk, a common approach is to enclose detector components in sealed plastic bags made of films known to be effective barriers against radon. We describe a new method to evaluate radon barriers which is unique in that (a) it gauges not only the intrinsic resistance to radon penetration of a plastic film but also the integrity of bags fabricated from the film and sealed following some protocol, and (b) it employs gamma spectroscopy rather than alpha spectroscopy. We report the results of applying this method to sealed bags fabricated from polypropylene, Nylon, Mylar, metallized Mylar, FEP, and PFA. Evaluation of the fluoropolymers FEP and PFA as radon barriers are the first such measurements.

An RF-only ion-funnel for extraction from high-pressure gases

An RF ion-funnel technique has been developed to extract ions from a high-pressure (10 bar) noble-gas environment into vacuum ($10^{-6}$ mbar). Detailed simulations have been performed and a prototype has been developed for the purpose of extracting $^{136}$Ba ions from Xe gas with high efficiency. With this prototype, ions have been extracted for the first time from high-pressure xenon gas and argon gas. Systematic studies have been carried out and compared to the simulations. This demonstration of extraction of ions with mass comparable to that of the gas generating the high-pressure into vacuum has applications to Ba tagging from a Xe-gas time-projection chamber (TPC) for double beta decay as well as to the general problem of recovering trace amounts of an ionized element in a heavy (m$>40$ u) carrier gas.

Neutrinoless double beta decay and direct searches for neutrino mass

Study of the neutrinoless double beta decay and searches for the manifestation of the neutrino mass in ordinary beta decay are the main sources of information about the absolute neutrino mass scale, and the only practical source of information about the charge conjugation properties of the neutrinos. Thus, these studies have a unique role in the plans for better understanding of the whole fast expanding field of neutrino physics.
