Quantum Coherent Control via Pauli Blocking

Coherent quantum control over many-particle quantum systems requires high fidelity dynamics. One way of achieving this is to use adiabatic schemes where the system follows an instantaneous eigenstate of the Hamiltonian over timescales that do not allow transitions to other states. This, however, makes control dynamics very slow. Here we introduce another concept that takes advantage of preventing unwanted transitions in fermionic systems by using Pauli blocking: excitations from a protected ground state to higher-lying states are avoided by adding a layer of buffer fermions, such that the protected fermions cannot make a transition to higher lying excited states because these are already occupied. This allows to speed-up adiabatic evolutions of the system. We do a thorough investigation of the technique, and demonstrate its power by applying it to high fidelity transport, trap expansion and splitting in ultracold atoms systems in anharmonic traps. Close analysis of these processes also leads to insights into the structure of the orthogonality catastrophe phenomenon.

Spatial non-adiabatic passage using geometric phases

Quantum technologies based on adiabatic techniques can be highly effective, but often at the cost of being very slow. Here we introduce a set of experimentally realistic, non-adiabatic protocols for spatial state preparation, which yield the same fidelity as their adiabatic counterparts, but on fast timescales. In particular, we consider a charged particle in a system of three tunnel-coupled quantum wells, where the presence of a magnetic field can induce a geometric phase during the tunnelling processes. We show that this leads to the appearance of complex tunnelling amplitudes and allows for the implementation of spatial non-adiabatic passage. We demonstrate the ability of such a system to transport a particle between two different wells and to generate a delocalised superposition between the three traps with high fidelity in short times.

Effect of Poisson noise on adiabatic quantum control

We present a detailed derivation of the master equation describing a general time-dependent quantum system with classical Poisson white noise and outline its various properties. We discuss the limiting cases of Poisson white noise and provide approximations for the different noise strength regimes. We show that using the eigenstates of the noise superoperator as a basis can be a useful way of expressing the master equation. Using this we simulate various settings to illustrate different effects of Poisson noise. In particular, we show a dip in the fidelity as a function of noise strength where high fidelity can occur in the strong noise regime for some cases. We also investigate recent claims [Jing et al., Phys. Rev. A 89 032110 (2014)] that this type of noise may improve rather than destroy adiabaticity.

Shaken not stirred: Creating exotic angular momentum states by shaking an optical lattice

We propose a method to create higher orbital states of ultracold atoms in the Mott regime of an optical lattice. This is done by periodically modulating the position of the trap minima (known as shaking) and controlling the interference term of the lasers creating the lattice. These methods are combined with techniques of shortcuts to adiabaticity. As an example of this, we show specifically how to create an anti-ferromagnetic type ordering of angular momentum states of atoms. The specific pulse sequences are designed using Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants and a four-level model for each well. The results are compared with numerical simulations of the full Schroedinger equation.

Optimal transport of two ions under slow spring-constant drifts

We investigate the effect of slow spring-constant drifts of the trap used to shuttle two ions of different mass. We design transport protocols to suppress or mitigate the final excitation energy by applying invariant-based inverse engineering, perturbation theory, and a harmonic dynamical normal-mode approximation. A simple, explicit trigonometric protocol for the trap trajectory is found to be robust with respect to the spring-constant drifts.

Inhibiting unwanted transitions in population transfer in two- and three-level quantum systems

We examine the stability of population transfer in two- and three-level systems against unwanted additional transitions. This population inversion is achieved by using recently proposed schemes called "shortcuts to adiabaticity". We quantify and compare the sensitivity of different schemes to these unwanted transitions. Finally, we provide examples of shortcut schemes which lead to a zero transition sensitivity in certain regimes, i.e. which lead to a nearly perfect population inversion even in the presence of unwanted transitions.

Exact Energy-Time Uncertainty Relation for Arrival Time by Absorption

We prove an uncertainty relation for energy and arrival time, where the arrival of a particle at a detector is modeled by an absorbing term added to the Hamiltonian. In this well-known scheme the probability for the particle's arrival at the counter is identified with the loss of normalization for an initial wave packet. Under the sole assumption that the absorbing term vanishes on the initial wave function, we show that $ΔT ΔE \geq \sqrt p \hbar/2$ and $ ΔE\geq 1.37\sqrt p\hbar$, where $ e$ denotes the mean arrival time, and $p$ is the probability for the particle to be eventually absorbed. Nearly minimal uncertainty can be achieved in a two-level system, and we propose a trapped ion experiment to realize this situation.

Relativistic Time-of-Arrival and Traversal Time

We compute in a relativistic way the time-of-arrival and the traversal time through a region of a free particle with spin 1/2. We do this by applying the relativistic extension of the Event-Enhanced Quantum Theory which we have presented in a previous paper. We find a very good coincidence of the results of our formalism and the results obtained by using classical relativistic mechanics.

A Relativistic Extension of Event-Enhanced Quantum Theory

In this paper, we develop a formalism describing in a relativistic way a system which consists of a classical and a quantum part being coupled. The formalism models one particle with spin 1/2 and it is a possible relativistic extension of the Event-Enhanced Quantum Theory. We postulate a covariant algorithm which plays the role of the standard reduction postulate in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. Furthermore, we present an algorithm to simulate detections of the particle.

Relativistic Time of Arrival

We propose a covariant algorithm for relativistic ideal measurements and for relativistic continuous measurements, its non-relativistic limit results the algorithm of the Event-Enhanced Quantum Theory. Therefore an additional intrinsic parameter, the proper time, is used. As an application we compute the time of arrival of a particle at a detector and find good agreement between the expected values of the time of arrival for weak detectors and the results of the relativistic point-mechanic over a wide range. For very high momentums there is a small probability for a negative time of arrival, so the expected times are a bit smaller than the results of the relativistic mechanics.
