The moment $\langle x\rangle_{u-d}$ of the nucleon from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD down to nearly physical quark masses

We present an update of our analysis [1] which includes additional ensembles at different quark masses, lattice spacings and volumes, all with high statistics. We use $N_f=2$ mass-degenerate quark flavours, employing the non-perturbatively improved clover action. The lattice matrix elements are converted to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme via renormalization factors determined non-perturbatively in the RI$^\prime$-MOM scheme. We have systematically investigated excited state contributions, in particular, at the smallest, near physical, pion mass. While our results~(with much increased precision) are consistent with Ref.~[1], comparing with previous determinations we find that excited state contributions can be significant if the quark smearing is not suitably optimized, in agreement with other recent studies. The difference with respect to the value for $\langle x\rangle_{u-d}$ extracted from experimental data is reduced but not resolved. Using lattice sizes in the range $L m_π\sim 3.4-6.7$, no significant finite volume effects were observed. Performing a controlled continuum limit that may remove the discrepancy will require simulations at lattice spacings $a< 0.06$ fm.

Color entanglement for $γ$-jet production in polarized pA collisions

A more reliable treatment of transverse momentum dependent physics and in particular transverse single spin asymmetries is urgently required, e.g. for polarized pA physics including novel effects like color entanglement. We argue that the measurement of azimuthal angular correlations of photons and jets produced in pA collisions provides a direct access to the novel gluon distribution $G_4$ that enters into many such processes.

Jet quenching from the lattice

We present a lattice study of the momentum broadening experienced by a hard parton in the quark-gluon plasma. In particular, the contributions to this real-time phenomenon from soft modes are extracted from a set of gauge-invariant operators in a dimensionally reduced effective theory (electrostatic QCD), which can be simulated on a Euclidean lattice. At the temperatures accessible to present experiments, the soft contributions to the jet quenching parameter are found to be quite large. We compare our results to phenomenological models and to holographic computations.

Investigating jet quenching on the lattice

Due to the dynamical, real-time, nature of the phenomenon, the study of jet quenching via lattice QCD simulations is not straightforward. In this contribution, however, we show how one can extract information about the momentum broadening of a hard parton moving in the quark-gluon plasma, from lattice calculations. After discussing the basic idea (originally proposed by Caron-Huot), we present a recent study, in which we estimated the jet quenching parameter non-perturbatively, from the lattice evaluation of a particular set of gauge-invariant operators.

A lattice study of the jet quenching parameter

We present a first-principle computation of the jet quenching parameter, which describes the momentum broadening of a high-energy parton moving through the deconfined state of QCD matter at high temperature. Following an idea originally proposed by Caron-Huot, we explain how one can evaluate the soft contribution to the collision kernel characterizing this real-time phenomenon, analyzing certain gauge-invariant operators in a dimensionally reduced effective theory (electrostatic QCD), which can be studied non-perturbatively via simulations on a Euclidean lattice. Our high-precision numerical computations at two different temperatures indicate that soft contributions to the jet quenching parameter are large. After discussing the systematic uncertainties involved, we present a quantitative estimate for the jet quenching parameter in the temperature range accessible at heavy-ion colliders, and compare it to results from phenomenological models as well as to strong-coupling computations based on the holographic correspondence.

Excited light and strange hadrons from the lattice with two Chirally Improved quarks

Results for excited light and strange hadrons from the lattice with two flavors of Chirally Improved sea quarks are presented. We perform simulations at several values of the pion mass ranging from 250 to 600 MeV and extrapolate to the physical pion mass. The variational method is applied to extract excited energy levels but also to discuss the content of the states. Among others, we explore the flavor singlet/octet content of Lambda states. In general, our results agree well with experiment, in particular we confirm the Lambda(1405) and its dominant flavor singlet structure.

Nucleon structure from stochastic estimators

Using stochastic estimators for connected meson and baryon three-point functions has successfully been tried in the past years. Compared to the standard sequential source method we trade the freedom to compute the current-to-sink propagator independently of the hadron sink for additional stochastic noise in our observables. In the case of the nucleon we can use this freedom to compute many different sink-momentum/polarization combinations, which grants access to more virtualities. We will present preliminary results on the scalar, electro-magnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD and contrast the performance of the stochastic method to the sequential source method. We find the stochastic method to be competitive in terms of errors at fixed cost.

Model Independent Evolution of Transverse Momentum Dependent Distribution Functions (TMDs) at NNLL

We discuss the evolution of the eight leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, which turns out to be universal and spin independent. By using the highest order perturbatively calculable ingredients at our disposal, we perform the resummation of the large logarithms that appear in the evolution kernel of transverse momentum distributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithms (NNLL), thus obtaining an expression for the kernel with highly reduced model dependence. Our results can also be obtained using the standard CSS approach when a particular choice of the $b^*$ prescription is used. In this sense, and while restricted to the perturbative domain of applicability, we consider our results as a "prediction" of the correct value of $b_{\rm max}$ which is very close to $1.5 {\rm GeV}^{-1}$. We explore under which kinematical conditions the effects of the non-perturbative region are negligible, and hence the evolution of transverse momentum distributions can be applied in a model independent way. The application of the kernel is illustrated by considering the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and the Sivers function.

Jet quenching in a strongly interacting plasma - A lattice approach

The phenomenon of jet quenching, related to the momentum broadening of a high-energy parton, provides important experimental evidence for the production of a strongly coupled, deconfined medium in heavy-ion collisions. Its theoretical description has been addressed in a number of works, both perturbatively and non-perturbatively (using the gauge-gravity duality). In this contribution, following a proposal by Caron-Huot, we discuss a novel approach to this problem, enabling one to extract non-perturbative information on this real-time phenomenon from simulations on a Euclidean lattice.

Chiral behavior of vector meson self energies

We employ a chiral Lagrangian framework with three dynamical flavors to calculate the masses of the lowest-lying vector mesons to one loop accuracy, and use the resulting formulae to extrapolate recent QCDSF lattice data on vector meson masses and mass ratios to the physical point. Our representation for the vector meson self energies also enables us to discuss loop corrections to the $ωϕ$ mixing amplitude.

Momentum broadening of partons on the light cone from the lattice

The jet quenching parameter describes the momentum broadening of a high-energy parton moving through the quark-gluon plasma. Following an approach originally proposed by Caron-Huot, we discuss how one can extract information on the collision kernel associated with the parton momentum broadening, from the analysis of certain gauge-invariant operators in dimensionally reduced effective theories, and present numerical results from a lattice study.

On the process dependent nuclear $k_\perp$ broadening effect

We study the process dependent nuclear $k_\perp$ broadening effect by employing the transverse momentum dependent(TMD) factorization approach in combination with the Mclerran-Venugopalan(MV) model. More specifically, we investigate how the parton transverse momentum distributions are affected by the process dependent gauge links in cold nuclear matter. In particular, our analysis also applies to the polarized cases including the nuclear quark Boer-Mulders function and the linearly polarized gluon distribution. Our main focus is on the nuclear TMDs at intermediate or large x.

Azimuthal asymmetries for quark pair production in pA collisions

We study the azimuthal asymmetries for quark pair production in proton-nucleus collisions using a hybrid approach in which the nucleus is treated in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework while the Lipatov approximation is applied on the proton side. Our treatment goes beyond the large N_c limit. We particularly focus on the so-called correlation limit where the imbalance of the transverse momentum of the quark pair is much smaller than the out-going individual quark transverse momenta. In this kinematic region, a matching between the hybrid approach and a factorization in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions(TMDs) has been found. It is shown which of the various unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon TMD distributions contribute to $\cos 2 ϕ$ and $\cos 4 ϕ$ modulations of quark pair production.

Transverse single spin asymmetry in hadronic $η_{c,b}$ production

We study the transverse single spin asymmetry in $η_{c,b}$ production in polarized hadron collisions, employing the collinear twist-3 approach in combination with the color singlet model. Our main focus lies on the contribution from the twist-3 Efremov-Teryaev-Qiu-Sterman function. By extrapolating the derived spin dependent cross section to the small transverse momentum region, consistency between the collinear twist-3 approach and the transverse momentum dependent factorization approach is confirmed. As a byproduct of this work, we identify a term contributing to the scale evolution of tri-gluon correlations in the flavor-singlet case which was previously missed.

Low-lying Lambda Baryons from the Lattice

In a lattice QCD calculation with two light dynamical Chirally Improved (CI) quarks we determine ground state and some excited state masses in all four Lambda baryon channels 1/2^\pm and 3/2^\pm. We perform an infinite volume extrapolation and confirm the widely discussed Lambda(1405). We also analyze the amount of octet-singlet mixing, which is helpful in comparing states with the quark model.

Exploring quark transverse momentum distributions with lattice QCD

We discuss in detail a method to study transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) using lattice QCD. To develop the formalism and to obtain first numerical results, we directly implement a bi-local quark-quark operator connected by a straight Wilson line, allowing us to study T-even, "process-independent" TMDs. Beyond results for x-integrated TMDs and quark densities, we present a study of correlations in x and transverse momentum. Our calculations are based on domain wall valence quark propagators by the LHP collaboration calculated on top of gauge configurations provided by MILC with 2+1 flavors of asqtad-improved staggered sea quarks.

Higgs boson production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions

We study Higgs boson production from gluon-gluon fusion at mid-rapidity in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. For this process the presently still little known gluon distribution function $h_1^{\perp g}$ gives a numerically relevant contribution. We show by explicite calculation that using CGC (color glass condensate) model input the result obtained in the naive k_t factorization approach matches the result obtained in the TMD factorization framework for a dilute medium. We also verify the earlier finding that the k_t factorization formalism for Higgs production breaks down in a dense medium. In doing so we formulate a hybrid model which allows one to treat such reactions theoretically.

Thermodynamics of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories in 2+1 dimensions II - The deconfined phase

We present a non-perturbative study of the equation of state in the deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theories in D=2+1 dimensions. We introduce a holographic model, based on the improved holographic QCD model, from which we derive a non-trivial relation between the order of the deconfinement phase transition and the behavior of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor as a function of the temperature T. We compare the theoretical predictions of this holographic model with a new set of high-precision numerical results from lattice simulations of SU(N) theories with N=2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 colors. The latter reveal that, similarly to the D=3+1 case, the bulk equilibrium thermodynamic quantities (pressure, trace of the energy-momentum tensor, energy density and entropy density) exhibit nearly perfect proportionality to the number of gluons, and can be successfully compared with the holographic predictions in a broad range of temperatures. Finally, we also show that, again similarly to the D=3+1 case, the trace of the energy-momentum tensor appears to be proportional to T^2 in a wide temperature range, starting from approximately 1.2 T_c, where T_c denotes the critical deconfinement temperature.
