Undulator-Based Production of Polarized Positrons

Full exploitation of the physics potential of a future International Linear Collider will require the use of polarized electron and positron beams. Experiment E166 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) has demonstrated a scheme in which an electron beam passes through a helical undulator to generate photons (whose first-harmonic spectrum extended to 7.9MeV) with circular polarization, which are then converted in a thin target to generate longitudinally polarized positrons and electrons. The experiment was carried out with a one-meter-long, 400-period, pulsed helical undulator in the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) operated at 46.6GeV. Measurements of the positron polarization have been performed at five positron energies from 4.5 to 7.5MeV. In addition, the electron polarization has been determined at 6.7MeV, and the effect of operating the undulator with a ferrofluid was also investigated. To compare the measurements with expectations, detailed simulations were made with an upgraded version of Geant4 that includes the dominant polarization-dependent interactions of electrons, positrons, and photons with matter. The measurements agree with calculations, corresponding to 80% polarization for positrons near 6MeV and 90% for electrons near 7MeV.

Frequency of Positron Helicity Reversal

The ILC baseline design for the positron source is based on a helical undulator and will deliver a positron beam with a polarization of 30% or more. In this contribution the need for fast reversal of the positron helicity is discussed.

Matching Parton Showers and Matrix Elements

We compare different procedures for combining fixed-order tree-level matrix element generators with parton showers. We use the case of W-production at the Tevatron and the LHC to compare different implementations of the so-called CKKW scheme and one based on the so-called MLM scheme using different matrix element generators and different parton cascades. We find that although similar results are obtained in all cases, there are important differences.

Monte Carlo based studies of a polarized positron source for International Linear Collider (ILC)

The full exploitation of the physics potential of an International Linear Collider (ILC) requires the development of a polarized positron beam. New concepts of polarized positron sources are based on the development of circularly polarized photon sources. The polarized photons create electron-positron pairs in a thin target and transfer their polarization state to the outgoing leptons. To achieve a high level of positron polarization the understanding of the production mechanisms in the target is crucial. Therefore a general framework for the simulation of polarized processes with GEANT4 is under development. In this contribution the current status of the project and its application to a study of the positron production process for the ILC is presented.

Implementing the ME+PS merging algorithm

The method to merge matrix elements for multi particle production and parton showers in electron-positron annihilations and hadronic collisions and its implementation into the new event generator SHERPA is described in detail. Examples highlighting different aspects of it are thoroughly discussed, some results for various cases are presented. In addition, a way to extend this method to general electroweak interactions is presented.

Simulating W/Z+jets production at the CERN LHC

The merging procedure of tree-level matrix elements and the subsequent parton shower as implemented in the new event generator SHERPA will be validated for the example of single gauge boson production at the LHC. The validation includes consistency checks and comparisons to results obtained from other event generators. In particular, comparisons with full next-to-leading order QCD calculations prove SHERPA's ability to correctly account for additional hard QCD radiation present in these processes.

Simulating W/Z+jets production at the Tevatron

The merging procedure of tree-level matrix elements and the subsequent parton shower as implemented in the new event generator SHERPA will be validated for the example of W/Z+jets production at the Tevatron. Comparisons with results obtained from other approaches and programs and with experimental results clearly show that the merging procedure yields relevant and correct results at both the hadron and parton levels.
