QCD with Two Light Dynamical Chirally Improved Quarks

Results for the excited meson and baryon spectrum with two flavors of Chirally Improved sea quarks are presented. We simulate several ensembles with pion masses ranging from 250 to 600 MeV and extrapolate to the physical pion mass. Strange quarks are treated within the partially quenched approximation. Using the variational method, we investigate the content of the states. Among others, we discuss the flavor singlet/octet content of Lambda states. In general, our results compare well with experiment, in particular we get very good agreement with the Lambda(1405) and confirm its flavor singlet nature.

Determination of SU(2) ChPT LECs from 2+1 flavor staggered lattice simulations

By fitting pion masses and decay constants from 2+1 flavor staggered lattice simulations to the predictions of NLO and NNLO SU(2) chiral perturbation theory we determine the low-energy constants l_3 and l_4. The lattice ensembles were generated by the Wuppertal-Budapest collaboration and cover pion masses in the range of 135 to 435 MeV and lattice scales between 0.7 and 2.0 GeV. By choosing a suitable scaling trajectory, we were able to demonstrate that precise and stable results for the LECs can be obtained from continuum ChPT to NLO. The pion masses available in this work also allow us to study the applicability of using ChPT to extrapolate from higher masses to the physical pion mass.

Longitudinally Polarized Photoproduction of Heavy Flavors at Next-to-Leading Order of QCD

We present a phenomenological study of charm quark photoproduction in longitudinally polarized lepton-hadron collisions at next-to-leading order accuracy of QCD. Our results are based on a recently developed, flexible parton-level Monte Carlo program for spin-dependent heavy flavor hadroproduction, which we extend to deal also with both direct and resolved photon contributions. The subsequent hadronization into charmed mesons is modeled in our calculations, which allows us to compare with data on double-spin asymmetries for D0 meson production taken by the COMPASS collaboration. In general, next-to-leading order QCD corrections are found to be very significant and do not cancel in spin asymmetries. We elucidate the role of the individual hard scattering subprocesses and determine the range of parton momentum fractions predominantly probed for charm production at COMPASS. Theoretical uncertainties are estimated by varying renormalization and factorization scales and parameters controlling the hadronization of the charm quarks.

_{u-d} from lattice QCD at nearly physical quark masses

We determine the second Mellin moment of the isovector quark parton distribution function _{u-d} from lattice QCD with N_f=2 sea quark flavours, employing the non-perturbatively improved Wilson-Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action at a pseudoscalar mass of 157(6) MeV. The result is converted non-perturbatively to the RI'-MOM scheme and then perturbatively to the MSbar scheme at a scale mu = 2 GeV. As the quark mass is reduced we find the lattice prediction to approach the value extracted from experiments.

Strangeness Contribution to the Proton Spin from Lattice QCD

We compute the strangeness and light-quark contributions Delta s, Delta u and Delta d to the proton spin in nf=2 lattice QCD at a pion mass of about 285 MeV and at a lattice spacing a approx 0.073 fm, using the non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson action. We carry out the renormalization of these matrix elements which involves mixing between contributions from different quark flavours. Our main result is the small negative value MSbar scheme value Delta s = -0.020(10)(4), at a scale mu = 7.4 GeV, of the strangeness contribution to the nucleon spin. The second error is an estimate of the uncertainty, due to the missing extrapolation to the physical point.

The strange and light quark contributions to the nucleon mass from Lattice QCD

We determine the strangeness and light quark fractions of the nucleon mass by computing the quark line connected and disconnected contributions to the matrix elements m_q in lattice QCD, using the non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson Fermionic action. We simulate n_F=2 mass degenerate sea quarks with a pion mass of about 285 MeV and a lattice spacing a approx 0.073 fm. The renormalization of the matrix elements involves mixing between contributions from different quark flavours. The pion-nucleon sigma-term is extrapolated to physical quark masses exploiting the sea quark mass dependence of the nucleon mass. We obtain the renormalized values σ_{πN} = 38(12) MeV at the physical point and f_{T_s}=σ_s/m_N= 0.012(14)^{+10}_{-3} for the strangeness contribution at our larger than physical sea quark mass.

Parametrizing Compton form factors with neural networks

We describe a method, based on neural networks, of revealing Compton form factors in the deeply virtual region. We compare this approach to standard least-squares model fitting both for a simplified toy case and for HERMES data.

SU(2) chiral perturbation theory low-energy constants from staggered 2+1 flavor simulations

We measure the pion mass and decay constant on ensembles generated by the Wuppertal-Budapest Collaboration, and extract the NLO low-energy constants l_3 and l_4 of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory. The data are generated in 2+1 flavor simulations with Symanzik glue and 2-fold stout-smeared staggered fermions, with pion masses varying from 135 MeV to 400 MeV, lattice scales between 0.7 GeV and 2.0 GeV, and m_s kept at its physical value. Furthermore, by excluding the lightest mass points, we are able to test the reliability of SU(2) chPT as a tool to extrapolate towards the physical point from higher pion masses.

Studying Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering with Neural Networks

Neural networks are utilized to fit Compton form factor H to HERMES data on deeply virtual Compton scattering off unpolarized protons. We used this result to predict the beam charge-spin assymetry for muon scattering off proton at the kinematics of the COMPASS II experiment.

Neural network generated parametrizations of deeply virtual Compton form factors

We have generated a parametrization of the Compton form factor (CFF) H based on data from deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) using neural networks. This approach offers an essentially model-independent fitting procedure, which provides realistic uncertainties. Furthermore, it facilitates propagation of uncertainties from experimental data to CFFs. We assumed dominance of the CFF H and used HERMES data on DVCS off unpolarized protons. We predict the beam charge-spin asymmetry for a proton at the kinematics of the COMPASS II experiment.

Theoretical considerations on multiparton interactions in QCD

We investigate several ingredients for a theory of multiple hard scattering in hadron-hadron collisions. Issues discussed include the space-time structure of multiple interactions, their power behavior, spin and color correlations, interference terms, scale evolution and Sudakov logarithms. We discuss possibilities to constrain multiparton distributions by lattice calculations and by connecting them with generalized parton distributions. We show that the behavior of two-parton distributions at small interparton distances leads to problems with ultraviolet divergences and with double counting, which requires modification of the presently available theoretical framework.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to Heavy Quark Correlations in Longitudinally Polarized Hadron-Hadron Collisions

We present a comprehensive phenomenological study of heavy flavor distributions and correlations in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at BNL-RHIC. All results are obtained with a flexible parton-level Monte Carlo program at next-to-leading order accuracy and include the fragmentation into heavy mesons, their subsequent semi-leptonic decays, and experimental cuts. Next-to-leading order QCD corrections are found to be significant for both cross sections and double-spin asymmetries. The sensitivity of heavy flavor measurements at BNL-RHIC to the gluon polarization of the nucleon is assessed. Electron-muon and muon-muon correlations turn out to be the most promising observables. Theoretical uncertainties are estimated by varying renormalization and factorization scales, heavy quark masses, and fragmentation parameters.

Nucleon form factors on the lattice with light dynamical fermions

The electromagnetic form factors provide important insight into the internal structure of the nucleon and continue to be of major interest for experiment and phenomenology. For an intermediate range of momenta the form factors can be calculated on the lattice. However, the reliability of the results is limited by systematic errors mostly due to the required extrapolation to physical quark masses. Chiral effective field theories predict a rather strong quark mass dependence in a range which was yet inaccessible for lattice simulations. We give an update on recent results from the QCDSF collaboration using gauge configurations with dynamical Nf=2, non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermions at pion masses as low as 350 MeV.

Towards a Theory of Entropy Production in the Little and Big Bang

We propose a broadly applicable formalism for the description of coarse grained entropy production in quantum mechanical processes. Our formalism is based on the Husimi transform of the quantum state, which encodes the notion that information about any quantum state is limited by the experimental resolution. We show in two analytically tractable cases (the decay of an unstable vacuum state and reheating after cosmic inflation) that the growth rate of the Wehrl entropy associated with the Husimi function approaches the classical Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. We also discuss various possible applications of our formalism, including the production of entropy in the early stages of a relativistic heavy ion collision.

Decoherence and Entropy Production in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

Short thermalization times of less than 1 fm/c for quark and gluon matter have been suggested by recent experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). It has been difficult to justify this rapid thermalization in first-principle calculations based on perturbation theory or the color glass condensate picture. Here, we address the related question of the decoherence of the gluon field, which is a necessary component of thermalization. We present a simplified leading-order computation of the decoherence time of a gluon ensemble subject to an incoming flux of Weizsacker-Williams gluons. We also discuss the entropy produced during the decoherence process and its relation to the entropy in the final state which has been measured experimentally.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to spin-dependent hadron-pair photoproduction

We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the ``direct'' part of the spin-dependent cross section for hadron-pair photoproduction. The calculation is performed using largely analytical methods. We present a brief phenomenological study of our results focussing on the $K$-factors and scale dependence of the next-to-leading order cross sections. This process is relevant for the extraction of the gluon polarization in present and future spin-dependent lepton-nucleon scattering experiments.
