Magnetotransport of dirty-limit van Hove singularity quasiparticles

Tuning of electronic density-of-states singularities is a common route to unconventional metal physics. Conceptually, van Hove singularities are realized only in clean two-dimensional systems. Little attention has therefore been given to the disordered (dirty) limit. Here, we provide a magnetotransport study of the dirty metamagnetic system calcium-doped strontium ruthenate. Fermi liquid properties persist across the metamagnetic transition, but with an unusually strong variation of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. This is revealed by a strong decoupling of inelastic electron scattering and electronic mass inferred from density-of-state probes. We discuss this Fermi liquid behavior in terms of a magnetic field tunable van Hove singularity in the presence of disorder. More generally, we show how dimensionality and disorder control the fate of transport properties across metamagnetic transitions.

Electron energy relaxation in disordered superconducting NbN films

We report on the inelastic-scattering rate of electrons on phonons and relaxation of electron energy studied by means of magnetoconductance, and photoresponse, respectively, in a series of strongly disordered superconducting NbN films. The studied films with thicknesses in the range from 3 to 33 nm are characterized by different Ioffe-Regel parameters but an almost constant product q_Tl(q_T is the wave vector of thermal phonons and l is the elastic mean free path of electrons). In the temperature range 14-30 K, the electron-phonon scattering rates obey temperature dependencies close to the power law 1/τ_{e-ph} \sim T^n with the exponents n = 3.2-3.8. We found that in this temperature range τ_{e-ph} and n of studied films vary weakly with the thickness and square resistance. At 10 K electron-phonon scattering times are in the range 11.9-17.5 ps. The data extracted from magnetoconductance measurements were used to describe the experimental photoresponse with the two-temperature model. For thick films, the photoresponse is reasonably well described without fitting parameters, however, for thinner films, the fit requires a smaller heat capacity of phonons. We attribute this finding to the reduced density of phonon states in thin films at low temperatures. We also show that the estimated Debye temperature in the studied NbN films is noticeably smaller than in bulk material.

Correlation between the tolerance factor and phase transition in Ln4-xLnxNi3O10 (Ln and Ln' = La, Pr and Nd; x = 0, 1, 2 and 3)

We have synthesized a series of the Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate solid solution Ln4-xLn'xNi3O10 (Ln and Ln' = La, Pr and Nd; x = 0, 1, 2 and 3) via the citrate precursor method at different reacting atmospheres. Both the electronic-transport and magnetization measurements on these samples show well-defined phase transitions at temperatures between 135 K and 165 K. These transition temperatures, the room-temperature resistivities, as well as the changes of the Pauli-paramagnetic susceptibilities at the respective phase transitions, strongly correlate with the Goldschmidt tolerance factor t, irrespective of the combination of the magnetic rare-earth ions with unmagnetic La3+. We conclude that these changes of the electronic properties are mostly related to the distortion of the NiO6 octahedra at the phase transition which is strongly correlated with the tolerance factor t, but are rather insensitive to the magnetism of the rare-earth ions Ln3+ and Ln'3+.

Short-range magnetic interactions and spin-glass behavior in the quasi-2D nickelate Pr4Ni3O8

The nickelate Pr4Ni3O8 features quasi-two-dimensional layers consisting of three stacked square-planar NiO2 planes, in a similar way to the well-known cuprate superconductors. The mixed-valent nature of Ni and its metallic properties makes it a candidate for potentially unconventional superconductivity. We have synthesized Pr4Ni3O8 by topotactic reduction of Pr4Ni3O10 in 10 percent hydrogen gas, and report on measurements of powder-neutron diffraction, magnetization and muon-spin rotation (uSR). We find that Pr4Ni3O8 shows complicated spin-glass behavior with a distinct magnetic memory effect in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K and a freezing temperature T_s ~ 68 K. Moreover, the analysis of uSR spectra indicates two magnetic processes characterized by remarkably different relaxation rates: a slowly-relaxing signal, resulting from paramagnetic fluctuations of Pr/Ni ions, and a fast-relaxing signal, whose relaxation rate increases substantially below ~ 70 K which can be ascribed to the presence of short-range correlated regions. We conclude that the complex spin-freezing process in Pr4Ni3O8 is governed by these multiple magnetic interactions. It is possible that the complex magnetism in Pr4Ni3O8 is detrimental to the occurrence of superconductivity.

Strong suppression of the resistivity near the transition to superconductivity in narrow micro-bridges in external magnetic fields

We have investigated a series of superconducting bridges based on homogeneous amorphous WSi and MoSi films, with bridge widths w ranging from 2 um to 1000 um and film thicknesses d ~ 4-6 nm and 100 nm. Upon decreasing the bridge widths below the respective Pearl lengths, we observe in all cases distinct changes in the characteristics of the resistive transitions to superconductivity. For each of the films, the resistivity curves R(B,T) separate at a well-defined and field-dependent temperature T*(B) with decreasing the temperature, resulting in a dramatic suppression of the resistivity and a sharpening of the transitions with decreasing bridge width w. The associated excess conductivity in all the bridges scales as 1/w, which may suggest the presence of a highly conducting region that is dominating the electric transport in narrow bridges. We argue that this effect can only be observed in materials with sufficiently weak vortex pinning.

Anisotropic character of the metal-to-metal transition in Pr4Ni$_3$O$_{10}$

As a member of the Ruddlesden-Popper Ln$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ series rare-earth-nickelates, the Pr4Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ consists of infinite quasi-two-dimensional perovskite-like Ni-O based layers. Although a metal-to-metal phase transition at Tpt = 157 K has been revealed by previous studies, a comprehensive study of physical properties associated with this transition has not yet been performed. We have grown single crystals of Pr4Ni3O10 at high oxygen pressure, and report on the physical properties around that phase transition, such as heat-capacity, electric-transport and magnetization. We observe a distinctly anisotropic behavior between in-plane and out-of-plane properties: a metal-to-metal transition at Tpt within the a-b plane, and a metal-to-insulator-like transition along the c-axis with decreasing temperature. Moreover, an anisotropic and anomalous negative magneto-resistance is observed at Tpt that we attribute to a slight suppression of the first-order transition with magnetic field. The magnetic-susceptibility can be well described by a Curie-Weiss law, with different Curie-constants and Pauli-spin susceptibilities between the high-temperature and the low-temperature phases. The single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements show a shape variation of the different NiO6 octahedra from the high-temperature phase to the low-temperature phase. This subtle change of the environment of the Ni sites is likely responsible for the different physical properties at high and low temperatures.

Preparation and Characterization of High-Entropy Alloy (TaNb)$_{1-x}$(ZrHfTi)$_x$ Superconducting Films

We report on the preparation and the physical properties of superconducting (TaNb)_1-x(ZrHfTi)_x high-entropy alloy films. The films were prepared by means of magnetron sputtering at room temperature, with x ranging from 0 to 1 with an average thickness of 600 - 950 nm. All films crystallize in a pseudo body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. For samples with x < 0.65, the normal-state properties are metallic, while for x > 0.65 the films are weakly insulating. The transition from metallic to weakly insulating occurs right at the near-equimolar stoichiometry. We find all films, except for x = 0 or 1, to become superconducting at low temperatures, and we interpret their superconducting properties within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) framework. The highest transition temperature T_c = 6.9 K of the solid solution is observed for x = 0.43. The highest upper-critical field B_c2(0) = 11.05 T is found for the near-equimolar ratio x = 0.65, where the mixing entropy is the largest. The superconducting parameters derived for all the films from transport measurements are found to be close to those that are reported for amorphous superconductors. Our results indicate that these films of high-entropy alloys are promising candidates for superconducting device fabrication.

Large Resistivity Reduction in Mixed-Valent CsAuBr$_3$ Under Pressure

We report on high-pressure $p \leq 45$ GPa resistivity measurements on the perovskite-related mixed-valent compound CsAuBr$_3$. The compounds high-pressure resistivity can be classified into three regions: For low pressures ($p < 10$ GPa) an insulator to metal transition is observed; between $p= 10$ GPa and 14 GPa the room temperature resistivity goes through a minimum and increases again; above $p = 14$ GPa a semiconducting state is observed. From this pressure up to the highest pressure of $p = 45$ GPa reached in this experiment, the room-temperature resistivity remains nearly constant. We find an extremely large resistivity reduction between ambient pressure and 10 GPa by more than 6 orders of magnitude. This decrease is among the largest reported changes in the resistivity for this narrow pressure regime. We show - by an analysis of the electronic band structure evolution of this material - that the large change in resistivity under pressure in not caused by a crossing of the bands at the Fermi level. We find that it instead stems from two bands that are pinned at the Fermi level and that are moving towards one another as a consequence of the mixed-valent to single-valent transition. This mechanism appears to be especially effective for the rapid buildup of the density of states at the Fermi level.

Heat flowing from cold to hot without external intervention by using a 'thermal inductor'

The cooling of boiling water all the way down to freezing, by thermally connecting it to a thermal bath held at ambient temperature without external intervention, would be quite unexpected. We describe the equivalent of a 'thermal inductor', composed of a Peltier element and an electric inductance, which can drive the temperature difference between two bodies to change sign by imposing inertia on the heat flowing between them, and enable continuing heat transfer from the chilling body to its warmer counterpart without the need of an external driving force. We demonstrate its operation in an experiment and show that the process can pass through a series of quasi-equilibrium states while fully complying with the second law of thermodynamics. This 'thermal inductor' extends the analogy between electrical and thermal circuits and could serve, with further progress in thermoelectric materials, to cool hot materials well below ambient temperature without external energy supply or moving parts.

Gr{ü}neisen parameter of quantum magnets with spin gap

Using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approach we obtained analytical expressions for thermodynamic quantities of the system of triplons in spin gapped quantum magnets such as magnetization, heat capacity and the magnetic Gr{ü}neisen parameter $Γ_H$. Near the critical temperature, $Γ_H$ is discontinuous and changes its sign upon the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplons. On the other hand, in the widely used Hartree-Fock-Popov (HFP) approach there is no discontinuity neither in the heat capacity nor in the Gr{ü}neisen parameter. We predict that in the low-temperature limit and near the critical magnetic field $H_c$, $Γ_H$ diverges as $Γ_H\sim 1/T^{2}$, while it scales as $Γ_H\sim 1/(H-H_c)$ as the magnetic field approaches the quantum critical point at $H_c$.

Tuning the orbital-lattice fluctuations in the mixed spin-dimer system Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$

In $A_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$, where $A$ = Sr or Ba, the Cr$^{5+}$ ions surrounded by oxygen ions in a tetrahedral coordination are Jahn-Teller active. The Jahn-Teller distortion leads to a structural transition and a related emergence of three twinned monoclinic domains below the structural phase transition. This transition is highly dynamic over an extended temperature range for $A$ = Sr. We have investigated mixed compounds Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with $x=2.9$ and $x=2.8$ by means of X-ray and neutron diffraction, Raman scattering and calorimetry. Based on the obtained evolution of the phonon frequencies, we find a distinct suppression of the orbital-lattice fluctuation regime with increasing Ba content. This stands in contrast to the linear behaviour exhibited by unit cell volumes, atomic positions and intradimer spin-spin exchange interactions.

Sequential superconductor-Bose insulator-Fermi insulator phase transitions in two-dimensional a-WSi

A zero-temperature magnetic-field-driven superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) in quasi-two-dimensional superconductors is expected to occur when the applied magnetic-field crosses a certain critical value. A fundamental question is whether this transition is due to the localization of Cooper pairs or due to the destruction of them. Here we address this question by studying the SIT in amorphous WSi. Transport measurements reveal the localization of Cooper pairs at a quantum critical field B_c^1 (Bose-insulator), with a product of the correlation length and dynamical exponents zv~4/3 near the quantum critical point (QCP). Beyond B_c^1, superconducting fluctuations still persist at finite temperatures. Above a second critical field B_c^2>B_c^1, the Cooper pairs are destroyed and the film becomes a Fermi-insulator. The different phases all merge at a tricritical point at finite temperatures with zv=2/3. Our results suggest a sequential superconductor to Bose insulator to Fermi insulator phase transition, which differs from the conventional scenario involving a single quantum critical point.

Superconducting fluctuations and characteristic time scales in amorphous WSi

We study magnitudes and temperature dependences of the electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction times which play the dominant role in the formation and relaxation of photon induced hotspot in two dimensional amorphous WSi films. The time constants are obtained through magnetoconductance measurements in perpendicular magnetic field in the superconducting fluctuation regime and through time-resolved photoresponse to optical pulses. The excess magnetoconductivity is interpreted in terms of the weak-localization effect and superconducting fluctuations. Aslamazov-Larkin, and Maki-Thompson superconducting fluctuation alone fail to reproduce the magnetic field dependence in the relatively high magnetic field range when the temperature is rather close to Tc because the suppression of the electronic density of states due to the formation of short lifetime Cooper pairs needs to be considered. The time scale τ_i of inelastic scattering is ascribed to a combination of electron-electron (τ_(e-e)) and electron-phonon (τ_(e-ph)) interaction times, and a characteristic electron-fluctuation time (τ_(e-fl)), which makes it possible to extract their magnitudes and temperature dependences from the measured τ_i. The ratio of phonon-electron (τ_(ph-e)) and electron-phonon interaction times is obtained via measurements of the optical photoresponse of WSi microbridges. Relatively large τ_(e-ph)/τ_(ph-e) and τ_(e-ph)/τ_(e-e) ratios ensure that in WSi the photon energy is more efficiently confined in the electron subsystem than in other materials commonly used in the technology of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). We discuss the impact of interaction times on the hotspot dynamics and compare relevant metrics of SNSPDs from different materials.

Bose - Einstein condensation of triplons with a weakly broken U(1) symmetry

The low-temperature properties of certain quantum magnets can be described in terms of a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnetic quasiparticles (triplons). Some mean-field approaches (MFA) to describe these systems, based on the standard grand canonical ensemble, do not take the anomalous density into account and leads to an internal inconsistency, as it has been shown by Hohenberg and Martin, and may therefore produce unphysical results. Moreover, an explicit breaking of the U(1) symmetry as observed, for example, in TlCuCl3 makes the application of MFA more complicated. In the present work, we develop a self-consistent MFA approach, similar to the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov approximation in the notion of representative statistical ensembles, including the effect of a weakly broken U(1) symmetry. We apply our results on experimental data of the quantum magnet TlCuCl3 and show that magnetization curves and the energy dispersion can be well described within this approximation assuming that the BEC scenario is still valid. We predict that the shift of the critical temperature Tc due to a finite exchange anisotropy is rather substantial even when the anisotropy parameter γis small, e.g., ΔT_c \approx 10%$ of Tc in H = 6T and for γ\approx 4 μeV.

Single crystal growth and study of the magnetic properties of the mixed spin-dimer system Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$

The compounds Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ are insulating dimerized antiferromagnets with Cr$^{5+}$ magnetic ions. These spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ions form hexagonal bilayers with a strong intradimer antiferromagnetic interaction, that leads to a singlet ground state and gapped triplet states. We report on the effect on the magnetic properties of Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ by introducing chemical disorder upon replacing Sr by Ba. Two single crystals of Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with $x=2.9$ (3.33\% of $mixing$) and $x=2.8$ (6.66\%) were grown in a four-mirror type optical floating-zone furnace. The magnetic properties on these compounds were studied by magnetization measurements. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba$_{0.1}$Sr$_{2.9}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ were performed in order to determine the interaction constants and the spin gap for $x=2.9$. The intradimer interaction constant is found to be $J_0$=5.332(2) meV, about 4\% smaller than that of pure Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$, while the interdimer exchange interaction $J_e$ is smaller by 6.9\%. These results indicate a noticeable change in the magnetic properties by a random substitution effect.

Superconducting fluctuations in a thin NbN film probed by the Hall effect

We present a comprehensive study of how superconducting fluctuations in the normal state contribute to the conductivity tensor in a thin (119 $Å$) film of NbN. It is shown how these fluctuations drive a sign change in the Hall coefficient $R_\mathrm{H}$ for low magnetic fields near the superconducting transition. The scaling behaviours as a function of distance to the transition $ε=\ln(T/T_\mathrm{c})$ of the longitudinal ($σ_\mathrm{xx}$) and transverse ($σ_\mathrm{xy}$) conductivity is found to be consistent with Gaussian fluctuation theory. Moreover, excellent quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is obtained without any adjustable parameters. Our experimental results thus provide a case study of the conductivity tensor originating from short-lived Cooper pairs.

Tuning the critical magnetic field of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation in Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$

The structure and magnetic interactions of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation candidates Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ and Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ have been studied thoroughly in the literature, but little is known about a possible triplon condensation in the corresponding solid solution Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$. We have prepared various members of this solid solution and systematically examined their magnetic properties in high magnetic fields up to 60 T and at low temperatures down to 340 mK, by means of pulsed field and cantilever magnetometry. From these experiments for $x\in\{3,2.9,2.8,2.7,2.6,2.5\}$, we find that the critical fields of Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$ decrease monotonically as a function of the Sr content $x$. This change is in good agreement with the earlier reported variation of the magnetic interactions in these compounds.

Position-Dependent Local Detection Efficiency in a Nanowire Superconducting Single-Photon Detector

We probe the local detection efficiency in a nanowire superconducting single-photon detector along the cross-section of the wire with a spatial resolution of 10 nm. We experimentally find a strong variation in the local detection efficiency of the device. We demonstrate that this effect explains previously observed variations in NbN detector efficiency as function of device geometry.
