Word maps with constants on symmetric groups

We study word maps with constants on symmetric groups. Even though there are mixed identities of bounded length that are valid for all symmetric groups, we show that no such identities hold in a metric sense. Moreover, we prove that word maps with constants and non-trivial content that are short enough have an image of positive diameter only depending on the length of the word. Finally, we also show that every self-map $G \to G$ on a finite non-abelian simple group is actually a word map with constants from $G$.

Word images in symmetric and classical groups of Lie type are dense

Let $w\in\mathbf F_k$ be a non-trivial word and denote by $w(G)\subseteq G$ the image of the associated word map $w\colon G^k\to G$. Let $G$ be one of the finite groups ${\rm S}_n,{\rm GL}_n(q),{\rm Sp}_{2m}(q),{\rm GO}_{2m}^\pm(q),{\rm GO}_{2m+1}(q),{\rm GU}_n(q)$ ($q$ a prime power, $n\geq 2$, $m\geq 1$), or the unitary group ${\rm U}_n$ over $\mathbb C$. Let $d_G$ be the normalized Hamming distance resp. the normalized rank metric on $G$ when $G$ is a symmetric group resp. one of the other classical groups and write $n(G)$ for the permutation resp. Lie rank of $G$. For $\varepsilon>0$, we prove that there exists an integer $N(\varepsilon,w)$ such that $w(G)$ is $\varepsilon$-dense in $G$ with respect to the metric $d_G$ if $n(G)\geq N(\varepsilon,w)$. This confirms metric versions of a conjectures by Shalev and Larsen. Equivalently, we prove that any non-trivial word map is surjective on a metric ultraproduct of groups $G$ from above such that $n(G)\to\infty$ along the ultrafilter. As a consequence of our methods, we also obtain an alternative proof of the result of Hui-Larsen-Shalev that $w_1({\rm SU}_n)w_2({\rm SU}_n)={\rm SU}_n$ for non-trivial words $w_1,w_2\in\mathbf F_k$ and $n$ sufficiently large.

Short Laws for Finite Groups of Lie Type

We produce new short laws in two variables valid in finite groups of Lie type. Our result improves upon results of Kozma and the second named author, and is sharp up to logarithmic factors, for all families except possibly the Suzuki groups. We also produce short laws valid for generating pairs and random pairs in finite groups of Lie type, and, conditional on Babai's diameter conjecture, make effective the dependence of our bounds on the rank. Our proof uses, among other tools, the Classification of Finite Simple Groups, Aschbacher's structure theorem for maximal subgroups for classical groups, and upper bounds on the diameters of finite simple groups due to Breuillard, Green, Guralnick, Pyber, Szabo and Tao.

Spectrahedral Shadows and Completely Positive Maps on Real Closed Fields

In this article we develop new methods for exhibiting convex semialgebraic sets that are not spectrahedral shadows. We characterize when the set of nonnegative polynomials with a given support is a spectrahedral shadow in terms of sums of squares. As an application of this result we prove that the cone of copositive matrices of size $n\geq5$ is not a spectrahedral shadow, answering a question of Scheiderer. Our arguments are based on the model theoretic observation that any formula defining a spectrahedral shadow must be preserved by every unital $\mathbb{R}$-linear completely positive map $R\to R$ on a real closed field extension $R$ of $\mathbb{R}$.

Maximal discrete subgroups in unitary groups of operator algebras

We show that if a group G is mixed-identity-free, then the projective unitary group of its group von Neumann algebra contains a maximal discrete subgroup containing G. The proofs are elementary and make use of free probability theory. In addition, we clarify the situation for C*-algebras.

Universal solvability of group equations

We give a new criterion for solvability of group equations, providing proofs of various generalizations of the Kervaire-Laudenbach conjecture for Connes-embeddable groups.

The Liouville property and random walks on topological groups

We study harmonic functions and Poisson boundaries for Borel probability measures on general (i.e., not necessarily locally compact) topological groups, and we prove that a second-countable topological group is amenable if and only if it admits a fully supported, regular Borel probability measure with trivial Poisson boundary. This generalizes work of Kaimanovich--Vershik and Rosenblatt, confirms a general topological version of Furstenberg's conjecture, and entails a characterization of the amenability of isometry groups in terms of the Liouville property for induced actions. Moreover, our result has non-trivial consequences concerning Liouville actions of discrete groups on countable sets

On the isometrisability of group actions on p-spaces

In this note we consider a $p$-isometrisability property of discrete groups. If $p=2$ this property is equivalent to unitarisability. We prove that any group containing a non-abelian free subgroup is not $p$-isometrisable for any $p\in (1, \infty)$. We also discuss some open questions and possible relations of $p$-isometrisability with the recently introduced Littlewood exponent ${\rm Lit}(Γ)$.

Aspects of $p$-adic operator algebras

In this article, we propose a $p$-adic analogue of complex Hilbert space and consider generalizations of some well-known theorems from functional analysis and the basic study of operators on Hilbert spaces. We compute the $K$-theory of the analogue of the algebra of compact operators and the algebra of all bounded operators. This article contains a survey on results from the thesis of the first author.

Approximation of functions by neural networks

We study the approximation of measurable functions on the hypercube by functions arising from affine neural networks. Our main achievement is an approximation of any measurable function $f \colon W_n \to [-1,1]$ up to a prescribed precision $\varepsilon>0$ by a bounded number of neurons, depending only on $\varepsilon$ and not on the function $f$ or $n \in \mathbb N$.

Asymptotics of Cheeger constants and unitarisability of groups

Given a group $Γ$, we establish a connection between the unitarisability of its uniformly bounded representations and the asymptotic behaviour of the isoperimetric constants of Cayley graphs of $Γ$ for increasingly large generating sets. The connection hinges on an analytic invariant ${\rm Lit}(Γ)\in [0, \infty]$ which we call the \emph{Littlewood exponent}. Finiteness, amenability, unitarisability and the existence of free subgroups are related respectively to the thresholds $0, 1, 2$ and $\infty$ for ${\rm Lit}(Γ)$. Using graphical small cancellation theory, we prove that there exist groups $Γ$ for which $1<{\rm Lit}(Γ)<\infty$. Further applications, examples and problems are discussed.

Stability, cohomology vanishing, and non-approximable groups

Several well-known open questions (such as: are all groups sofic/hyperlinear?) have a common form: can all groups be approximated by asymptotic homomorphisms into the symmetric groups $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$ (in the sofic case) or the finite dimensional unitary groups ${\rm U}(n)$ (in the hyperlinear case)? In the case of ${\rm U}(n)$, the question can be asked with respect to different metrics and norms. This paper answers, for the first time, one of these versions, showing that there exist fintely presented groups which are not approximated by ${\rm U}(n)$ with respect to the Frobenius norm $\|T\|_{\rm{Frob}}=\sqrt{\sum_{i,j=1}^n|T_{ij}|^2},T=[T_{ij}]_{i,j=1}^n\in\mathrm{M}_n(\mathbb C)$. Our strategy is to show that some higher dimensional cohomology vanishing phenomena implies stability, that is, every Frobenius-approximate homomorphism into finite-dimensional unitary groups is close to an actual homomorphism. This is combined with existence results of certain non-residually finite central extensions of lattices in some simple $p$-adic Lie groups. These groups act on high rank Bruhat-Tits buildings and satisfy the needed vanishing cohomology phenomenon and are thus stable and not Frobenius-approximated.

Stability and Invariant Random Subgroups

Consider $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$, endowed with the normalized Hamming metric $d_n$. A finitely-generated group $Γ$ is \emph{P-stable} if every almost homomorphism $ρ_{n_k}\colon Γ\rightarrow\operatorname{Sym}(n_k)$ (i.e., for every $g,h\inΓ$, $\lim_{k\rightarrow\infty}d_{n_k}( ρ_{n_k}(gh),ρ_{n_k}(g)ρ_{n_k}(h))=0$) is close to an actual homomorphism $φ_{n_k} \colonΓ\rightarrow\operatorname{Sym}(n_k)$. Glebsky and Rivera observed that finite groups are P-stable, while Arzhantseva and Păunescu showed the same for abelian groups and raised many questions, especially about P-stability of amenable groups. We develop P-stability in general, and in particular for amenable groups. Our main tool is the theory of invariant random subgroups (IRS), which enables us to give a characterization of P-stability among amenable groups, and to deduce stability and instability of various families of amenable groups.

Finitary approximations of groups and their applications

In these notes we will survey recent results on various finitary approximation properties of infinite groups. We will discuss various restrictions on groups that are approximated for example by finite solvable groups or finite-dimensional unitary groups with the Frobenius metric. Towards the end, we also briefly discuss various applications of those approximation properties to the understanding of the equational theory of a group.

On Projections of Free Semialgebraic Sets

An important result in real algebraic geometry is the projection theorem: every projection of a semialgebraic set is again semialgebraic. This theorem and some of its conclusions lie at the basis of many other results, for example the decidability of the theory of real closed fields, and almost all Positivstellensätze. Recently, non-commutative real algebraic geometry has evolved as an exciting new area of research, with many important applications. In this paper we examine to which extend a projection theorem is possible in the non-commutative (=free) setting. Although it is not yet clear what the correct notion of a free semialgebraic set is, we review and extend some results that count against a full free projection theorem. For example, it is undecidable whether a free statement holds for all matrices of at least one size. We then prove a weak version of the projection theorem: projections along linear and separated variables yields a semi-algebraically parametrised free semi-algebraic set.

A note on the normal subgroup lattice of ultraproducts of finite quasisimple groups

In [A. Stolz and A. Thom, On the lattice of normal subgroups in ultraproducts of compact simple groups, PLMS 108(1), 2014] it was stated that the lattice of normal subgroups of an ultraproduct of finite simple groups is always linearly ordered. This is false in this form in most cases for classical groups of Lie type. We correct the statement and point out a version of 'relative' bounded generation results for classical quasisimple groups and its implications on the structure of the lattice of normal subgroups of an ultraproduct of quasisimple groups.
