Comparison between algebraic and topological K-theory of locally convex algebras

This paper is concerned with the algebraic K-theory of locally convex algebras stabilized by operator ideals, and its comparison with topological K-theory. We show that the obstruction for the comparison map between algebraic and topological K-theory to be an isomorphism is (absolute) algebraic cyclic homology and prove the existence of an 6-term exact sequence. We show that cyclic homology vanishes in the case when J is the ideal of compact operators and L is a Frechet algebra with bounded app. unit. This proves the generalized version of Karoubi's conjecture due to Mariusz Wodzicki and announced in his paper "Algebraic K-theory and functional analysis", First European Congress of Mathematics, Vol. II (Paris, 1992), 485--496, Progr. Math., 120, Birkhäuser, Basel, 1994. We also consider stabilization with respect to a wider class of operator ideals, called sub-harmonic. We study the algebraic K-theory of the tensor product of a sub-harmonic ideal with an arbitrary complex algebra and prove that the obstruction for the periodicity of algebraic K-theory is again cyclic homology. The main technical tools we use are the diffeotopy invariance theorem of Cuntz and the second author (which we generalize), and the excision theorem for infinitesimal K-theory, due to the first author.

Integer operators in finite von Neumann algebras

Motivated by the study of spectral properties of self-adjoint operators in the integral group ring of a sofic group, we define and study integer operators. We establish a relation with classical potential theory and in particular the circle of results obtained by M. Fekete and G. Szeg"o. More concretely, we use results by R. Rumely on equidistribution of algebraic integers to obtain a description of those integer operator which have spectrum of logarithmic capacity less or equal to one. Finally, we relate the study of integer operators to a recent construction by B. and L. Petracovici and A. Zaharescu.

Duality for topological abelian group stacks and T-duality

v2: An additional assumption was added in Theorem 4.8. In order to show that a connected abelian group is admissible on the site of locally compact spaces we must in addition assume that it is locally topologically divisible. This condition is used in the proof of Lemma 4.62.

On a conjecture of Daniel H. Gottlieb

We give a counterexample to a conjecture of D.H. Gottlieb and prove a strengthened version of it. The conjecture says that a map from a finite CW-complex X to an aspherical CW-complex Y with non-zero Euler characteristic can have non-trivial degree (suitably defined) only if the centralizer of the image of the fundamental group of X is trivial. As a corollary we show that in the above situation all components of non-zero degree maps in the space of maps from X to Y are contractible.

Bivariant algebraic K-Theory

We show how methods from K-theory of operator algebras can be applied in a completely algebraic setting to define a bivariant, matrix-stable, homotopy-invariant, excisive K-theory of algebras over a fixed unital ground ring H, kk_*(A,B), which is universal in the sense that it maps uniquely to any other such theory. It turns out kk is related to C. Weibel's homotopy algebraic K-theory, KH. We prove that, if H is commutative and A is central as an H-bimodule, then kk_*(H,A)=KH_*(A). We show further that some calculations from operator algebra KK-theory, such as the exact sequence of Pimsner-Voiculescu, carry over to algebraic kk.

Sofic groups and diophantine approximation

We prove the algebraic eigenvalue conjecture of J. Dodziuk, P. Linnell, V. Mathai, T. Schick and S. Yates for sofic groups. Moreover, we give restrictions on the spectral measure of elements in the integral group ring. Finally, we define integer operators and prove a quantization of the operator norm below 2.

L^2-Invariants and rank metric

We introduce a notion of rank completion for bi-modules over a finite tracial von Neumann algebra. We show that the functor of rank completion is exact and that the category of complete modules is abelian with enough projective objects. This leads to interesting computations in the L^2-homology for tracial algebras. As an application, we also give a new proof of a Theorem of Gaboriau on invariance of L^2-Betti numbers under orbit equivalence.

L^2-cohomology for von Neumann algebras

We study L^2-Betti numbers for von Neumann algebras, as defined by D. Shlyakhtenko and A. Connes. We give a definition of L^2-cohomology and show how the study of the first L^2-Betti number can be related with the study of derivations with values in a bi-module of affiliated operators. We show several results about the possibility of extending derivations from sub-algebras and about uniqueness of such extensions. Along the way, we prove some results about the dimension function of modules over rings of affiliated operators which are of independent interest.

L^2-Betti numbers for subfactors

We study L^2-Betti numbers for von Neumann algebras, as defined by D. Shlyakhtenko and A. Connes, in the presence of a bi-finite correspondence and prove a proportionality formula.

A remark about the Connes fusion tensor product

We analyze the algebraic structure of the Connes fusion tensor product (CFTP) in the case of bi-finite Hilbert modules over a von Neumann algebra M. It turns out that all complications in its definition disappear if one uses the closely related bi-modules of bounded vectors. We construct an equivalence of monoidal categories with duality between a category of Hilbert bi-modules over M with CFTP and some natural category of bi-modules over M with the usual relative algebraic tensor product. The results are surely well-known to the experts. We hope that the exposition and presentation is useful for those who want to learn about the CFTP .

Algebraic K-theory and locally convex algebras

We consider functors from the category of locally convex algebras to abelian groups and prove invariance under smooth homotopies for weakly J-stable algebras, where J is a harmonic operator ideal. This applies in particular to negative algebraic K-theory. We develop the technology of Kasparov modules in an algebraic setting in order to obtain the results. The article also includes a computation of the first algebraic K-theory of harmonic operator ideals.
