(Super-)integrable systems associated to 2-dimensional projective connections with one projective symmetry

Projective connections arise from equivalence classes of affine connections under the reparametrization of geodesics. They may also be viewed as quotient systems of the classical geodesic equation. After studying the link between integrals of the (classical) geodesic flow and its associated projective connection, we turn our attention to 2-dimensional metrics that admit one projective vector field, i.e. whose local flow sends unparametrized geodesics into unparametrized geodesics. We review and discuss the classification of these metrics, introducing special coordinates on the linear space of solutions to a certain system of partial differential equations, from which such metrics are obtained. Particularly, we discuss those that give rise to free second-order superintegrable Hamiltonian systems, i.e. which admit 2 additional, functionally independent quadratic integrals. We prove that these systems are parametrized by the 2-sphere, except for 6 exceptional points where the projective symmetry becomes homothetic.

On integrability of certain rank 2 sub-Riemannian structures

We discuss the integrability of rank 2 sub-Riemannian structures on low-dimensional manifolds, and then prove that some structures of that type in dimension 6, 7 and 8 have a lot of symmetry but no integrals polynomial in momenta of low degrees, except for those coming from the Killing fields and the Hamiltonian, thus indicating non-integrability of the corresponding geodesic flows.

Killing tensors in stationary and axially symmetric space-times

We discuss the existence of Killing tensors for certain (physically motivated) stationary and axially symmetric vacuum space-times. We show nonexistence of a nontrivial Killing tensor for a Tomimatsu-Sato metric (up to valence 7), for a C-metric (up to valence 9) and for a Zipoy-Voorhees metric (up to valence 11). The results are obtained by mathematically completely rigorous, nontrivial computer algebra computations with a huge number of equations involved in the problem.

Reducibility of Valence-3 Killing Tensors in Weyl's Class of Stationary and Axially Symmetric Space-Times

Stationary and axially symmetric space-times play an important role in astrophysics, particularly in the theory of neutron stars and black holes. The static vacuum sub-class of these space-times is known as Weyl's class, and contains the Schwarzschild space-time as its most prominent example. This paper is going to study the space of Killing tensor fields of valence 3 for space-times of Weyl's class. Killing tensor fields play a crucial role in physics since they are in correspondence to invariants of the geodesic motion (i.e. constants of the motion). It will be proven that in static and axially symmetric vacuum space-times the space of Killing tensor fields of valence 3 is generated by Killing vector fields and quadratic Killing tensor fields. Using this result, it will be proven that for the family of Zipoy-Voorhees metrics, valence-3 Killing tensor fields are always generated by Killing vector fields and the metric.
