Electricity markets regarding the operational flexibility of power plants

Electricity market mechanisms designed to steer sustainable generation of electricity play an important role for the energy transition intended to mitigate climate change. One of the major problems is to complement volatile renewable energy sources by operationally flexible capacity reserves. In this paper a proposal is given to determine prices on electricity markets taking into account the operational flexibility of power plants, such that the costs of long-term capacity reserves can be paid by short-term electricity spot markets. For this purpose, a measure of operational flexibility is introduced enabling to compute an inflexibility fee charging each individual power plant on a wholesale electricity spot market. The total sum of inflexibility fees accumulated on the spot markets then can be used to finance a capacity market keeping the necessary reserves to warrant grid reliability. Here each reserve power plant then gets a reliability payment depending on its operational flexibility. The proposal is applied to a small exemplary grid, illustrating its main idea and also revealing the caveat that too high fees paradoxically could create incentives to employ highly flexible power plants on the spot market rather than to run them as backup capacity.

Algebraic hierarchy of logics unifying fuzzy logic and quantum logic

In this paper, a short survey about the concepts underlying general logics is given. In particular, a novel rigorous definition of a fuzzy negation as an operation acting on a lattice to render it into a fuzzy logic is presented. According to this definition, a fuzzy negation satisfies the weak double negation condition, requiring double negation to be expansive, the antitony condition, being equivalent to the disjunctive De Morgan law and thus warranting compatibility of negation with the lattice operations, and the Boolean boundary condition stating that the universal bounds of the lattice are the negation of each other. From this perspective, the most general logics are fuzzy logics, containing as special cases paraconsistent (quantum) logics, quantum logics, intuitionistic logics, and Boolean logics, each of which given by its own algebraic restrictions. New examples of a non-contradictory logic violating the conjunctive De Morgan law, and of a typical non-orthomodular fuzzy logic along with its explicit lattice representation are given.

Global stability criterion for a quantum feedback control process on a single qubit and exponential stability in case of perfect detection efficiency

Quantum feedback control is a technology which can be used to drive a quantum system into a predetermined eigenstate. In this article, sufficient conditions for the experiment parameters of a quantum feedback control process of a homodyne QND measurement are given to guarantee feedback control of a spin-1/2 quantum system in case of imperfect detection efficiency. For the case of pure states and perfect detection efficiency, time scales of feedback control processes are calculated.

XML framework for concept description and knowledge representation

An XML framework for concept description is given, based upon the fact that the tree structure of XML implies the logical structure of concepts as defined by attributional calculus. Especially, the attribute-value representation is implementable in the XML framework. Since the attribute-value representation is an important way to represent knowledge in AI, the framework offers a further and simpler way than the powerful RDF technology.

The ray attack, an inefficient trial to break RSA cryptosystems

The basic properties of RSA cryptosystems and some classical attacks on them are described. Derived from geometric properties of the Euler functions, the Euler function rays, a new ansatz to attack RSA cryptosystems is presented. A resulting, albeit inefficient, algorithm is given. It essentially consists of a loop with starting value determined by the Euler function ray and with step width given by a function $ω_e(n)$ being a multiple of the order $\mathrm{ord}_n(e)$, where $e$ denotes the public key exponent and $n$ the RSA modulus. For $n=pq$ and an estimate $r<\sqrt{pq}$ for the smaller prime factor $p$, the running time is given by $T(e,n,r) = O((r-p)\ln e \ln n \ln r).$

The black hole tunnel phenomenon

The potentials of spin-weighted wave equations in various Kerr-Newman black holes are analyzed. They all form singular potential barriers at the event horizon. Applying the WKB approximation it is shown that no particle can tunnel out of the interior of a static black hole. However, photons inside a non-extremely rotating Kerr black hole may tunnel out into the outer space, whereas neutrinos, electrons, and gravitons may not. If the rotation is extremal, any particle may tunnel out, under restrictive conditions. It is unknown whether photons and gravitons may tunnel out if the black hole is charged and rotating.
