Qutrit squeezing via semiclassical evolution

We introduce a concept of squeezing in collective qutrit systems through a geometrical picture connected to the deformation of the isotropic fluctuations of su(3) operators when evaluated in a coherent state. This kind of squeezing can be generated by Hamiltonians non-linear in the generators of su(3) algebra. A simple model of such a non-linear evolution is analyzed in terms of semiclassical evolution of the SU(3) Wigner function.

Transient entanglement in a spin chain stimulated by phase pulses

Dynamics of the one-dimensional open Ising chain under influence of $π$ -pulses is studied. It is shown that the application of a specific sequence of such instant kicks to selective spins stimulates arising of perfect dynamical pairwise entanglement between ends of the spin chain. Analytic formulas for the concurrence dynamics are derived. It is also shown that the time required to perfectly entangle the ends of the chains grows linearly with the number of spins in the chain. The final entangled state of the ending spins is always the same and does not depend on length the chain.

Entanglement enhancement for two spins assisted by two phase kicks

We study the entanglement dynamics in a two-spin system governed by a bilinear Hamiltonian and assisted by phase kicks. It is found that the application of instant kicks to both spins at some specific moments leads to enhancement of entanglement. This procedure also improves the transient character of entanglement leading, for large spins, to a formation of a plateau for the I-concurrence. We have numerically investigated the spin-spin dynamics for several values of spins and observed a substantial enhancement of entanglement in comparison to the evolution without kicks.

Quantum phase transitions in an effective Hamiltonian: fast and slow systems

An effective Hamiltonian describing interaction between generic "fast" and a "slow" systems is obtained in the strong interaction limit. The result is applied for studying the effect of quantum phase transition as a bifurcation of the ground state of the "slow subsystem" in the thermodynamic limit. Examples as atom-field and atom-atom interactions are analyzed in detail.

Quantum Tomography of a system of three-level atoms

We analyze the possibility of tomographic reconstruction of a system of three-level atoms in both non-degenerate and degenerate cases. In the non-degenerate case (when both transitions can be accessed independently) a complete reconstruction is possible. In the degenerate case (when both transitions are excited simultaneously) the complete reconstruction is achievable only for a single atom in the Sigma configuration. For multiple Sigma atoms, or even a single atom in the Lambda configuration, only partial reconstruction is possible. Examples of one and two-atom cases are explicitly considered.

Mutually unbiased bases and discrete Wigner functions

Mutually unbiased bases and discrete Wigner functions are closely, but not uniquely related. Such a connection becomes more interesting when the Hilbert space has a dimension that is a power of a prime $N=d^n$, which describes a composite system of $n$ qudits. Hence, entanglement naturally enters the picture. Although our results are general, we concentrate on the simplest nontrivial example of dimension $N=8=2^3$. It is shown that the number of fundamentally different Wigner functions is severely limited if one simultaneously imposes translational covariance and that the generating operators consist of rotations around two orthogonal axes, acting on the individual qubits only.

Quantum polarization properties of two-mode energy eigenstates

We show that any pure, two-mode, $N$-photon state with $N$ odd or equal to two can be transformed into an orthogonal state using only linear optics. According to a recently suggested definition of polarization degree, this implies that all such states are fully polarized. This is also found to be true for any pure, two-mode, energy eigenstate belonging to a two-dimensional SU(2) orbit. Complete two- and three-photon bases whose basis states are related by only phase shifts or geometrical rotations are also derived.

A description of entanglement in terms of quantum phase

We explore the role played by the phase in an accurate description of the entanglement of bipartite systems. We first present an appropriate polar decomposition that leads to a truly Hermitian operator for the phase of a single qubit. We also examine the positive operator-valued measures that can describe the qubit phase properties. When dealing with two qubits, the relative phase seems to be a natural variable to understand entanglement. In this spirit, we propose a measure of entanglement based on this variable.

An Algebraic Approach to Solving Evolution Problems in Some Nonlinear Quantum Models

A new general Lie-algebraic approach is proposed to solving evolution tasks in some nonlinear problems of quantum physics with polynomially deformed Lie algebras $su_{pd}(2)$ as their dynamic symmetry algebras. The method makes use of an expansion of the evolution operators by power series in the $su_{pd}(2)$ shift operators and a (recursive) reduction of finding coefficient functions to solving auxiliary exactly solvable $su(2)$ problems with quadratic Hamiltonians.
