Simultaneous Chandra and HST observations of the quiescent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries in 47 Tucanae

We present simultaneous Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope observations of three certain (X5, X7, W37) and two likely (X4, W17) quiescent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries (qLMXBs) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc. We study these systems in the X-ray, optical and near-ultraviolet (NUV) using the simultaneous data and additional non-contemporaneous HST data. We have discovered a blue and variable NUV counterpart to W17. We have not securely identified the eclipsing qLMXB W37 in the optical or NUV. Deeper high-resolution imaging is needed to further investigate the faint NUV excess near the centre of the W37 error circle. We suggest that a previously identified optical astrometric match to X7 is likely the true counterpart. The Halpha emission and the location of the counterpart in the colour-magnitude diagram, indicate that the secondary is probably a non-degenerate, H-rich star. This is consistent with previous results from fitting X7's X-ray spectrum. In X4, the simultaneous X-ray and optical behaviour supports the earlier suggestion that the X-ray variability is driven by changes in accretion rate. The X-ray eclipses in X5 coincide with minima in the optical/NUV light curves. Comparison of the 47 Tuc qLMXBs with the cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the cluster confirms that overall the qLMXBs have larger X-ray-to-optical flux ratios. Based on their optical/NUV colors, we conclude that the accretion disks in the qLMXBs are less prominent than in CVs. This makes the ratio of X-ray flux to excess blue optical flux a powerful discriminator between CVs and qLMXBs.

The Heart of Entanglement: Chiral, Nematic, and Incommensurate Phases in the Kitaev-Gamma Ladder in a Field

The bond-dependent Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice with anyonic excitations has recently attracted considerable attention. However, in solid state materials other spin interactions are present, and among such additional interactions, the off-diagonal symmetric Gamma interaction, another type of bond-dependent term, has been particularly challenging to fully understand. A minimal Kitaev-Gamma (KG) model has been investigated by various numerical techniques under a magnetic field, but definite conclusions about field-induced spin liquids remain elusive and one reason may lie in the limited sizes of the two-dimensional geometry it is possible to access numerically. We therefore focus on the KG model defined on a two-leg ladder which is much more amenable to a complete study, and determine the entire phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field along [111]-direction. Due to the competition between the interactions and the field, an extremely rich phase diagram emerges with fifteen distinct phases. Focusing near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region, we identify nine different phases solely within this region: several incommensurate magnetically ordered phases, spin nematic, and two chiral phases with enhanced entanglement. Of particular interest is a highly entangled phase with staggered chirality with zero-net flux occurring at intermediate field, which along with its companion phases outline a heart-shaped region of high entanglement, the heart of entanglement. We compare our results for the ladder with a C3 symmetric cluster of the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, and offer insights into possible spin liquids in the two-dimensional limit.

Honeycomb-Lattice Mott insulator on Tantalum Disulphide

Effects of electron many-body interactions amplify in an electronic system with a narrow bandwidth opening a way to exotic physics. A narrow band in a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice is particularly intriguing as combined with Dirac bands and topological properties but the material realization of a strongly interacting honeycomb lattice described by the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model has not been identified. Here we report a novel approach to realize a 2D honeycomb-lattice narrow-band system with strongly interacting 5$d$ electrons. We engineer a well-known triangular lattice 2D Mott insulator 1T-TaS$_2$ into a honeycomb lattice utilizing an adsorbate superstructure. Potassium (K) adatoms at an optimum coverage deplete one-third of the unpaired $d$ electrons and the remaining electrons form a honeycomb lattice with a very small hopping. Ab initio calculations show extremely narrow Z$_2$ topological bands mimicking the Kane-Mele model. Electron spectroscopy detects an order of magnitude bigger charge gap confirming the substantial electron correlation as confirmed by dynamical mean field theory. It could be the first artificial Mott insulator with a finite spin Chern number.

Theory of the field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid

Elementary excitations in highly entangled states such as quantum spin liquids may exhibit exotic statistics, different from those obeyed by fundamental bosons and fermions. Excitations called non-Abelian anyons are predicted to exist in a Kitaev spin liquid - the ground state of an exactly solvable model proposed by Kitaev almost a decade ago. A smoking-gun signature of such non-Abelian anyons, namely a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity, was recently reported in $α$-RuCl$_3$. While fascinating, a microscopic theory for this phenomenon in $α$-RuCl$_3$ remains elusive because the pure Kitaev phase cannot capture these anyons appearing in an intermediate magnetic field. Here we present a microscopic theory of the Kitaev spin liquid emerging between the low- and high-field states. Essential to this result is an antiferromagnetic off-diagonal symmetric interaction that permits the Kitaev spin liquid to protrude from the pure ferromagnetic Kitaev limit under a magnetic field. This generic model captures a field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid, and displays strong anisotropy of field effects. A wide regime of non-Abelian anyon Kitaev spin liquid is predicted when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the honeycomb plane.

Non-local String Order Parameter in the $S = 1/2$ Kitaev-Heisenberg Ladder

We study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev-Heisenberg (KJ) model in a two-leg ladder. Without a Heisenberg interaction, the Kitaev phase in the ladder model has Majorana fermions with local Z$_2$ gauge fields, and is usually described as a disordered phase without any order parameter. Here we prove the existence of a non-local string order parameter (SOP) in the Kitaev phase which survives with a finite Heisenberg interaction. The SOP is obtained by relating the Kitaev ladder, through a non-local unitary transformation, to a one-dimensional $XY$ chain with an Ising coupling to a dangling spin at every site. This differentiates the Kitaev phases from other nearby phases including a rung singlet. Two phases with non-zero SOP corresponding to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions are identified. The full phase diagram of the KJ ladder is determined using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, which shows a striking similarity to the KJ model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice.

Counter-rotating spiral order in three dimensional iridates: signature of hidden symmetry in Kitaev-$Γ$ model

The unconventional magnetic orderings found in Kitaev spin liquid candidates suggest frustration of spin interactions, and raise a possibility of nearby spin liquid phases. In particular, counter-rotating spiral ordering in three-dimensional (3D) iridates is striking, and understanding the microscopic mechanism of such ordering may provide routes to 3D Kitaev spin liquids. We study a minimal 3D model including Kitaev $K$ and a symmetric off-diagonal bond-dependent $Γ$ interaction on the hyperhoneycomb lattice using exact diagonalization. We first show that a 12-site unitary transformation unveils a Heisenberg model with hidden SU(2) symmetry when $K = Γ$. The magnetic ordering in the transformed basis then generically maps to the counter-rotating noncoplanar spiral order of the original spin. The moment direction depends on perturbations away from the SU(2) point. When $K$ and $Γ$ are negative, a positive Heisenberg interaction favors the (110)-direction reported in the neutron scattering measurement on $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Our findings offer a relevant set of microscopic parameters, which in turn guides a way to approach possible Kitaev spin liquids.

Path to stable quantum spin liquids in spin-orbit coupled correlated materials

The spin liquid phase is one of the prominent strongly interacting topological phases of matter whose unambiguous confirmation is yet to be reached despite intensive experimental efforts on numerous candidate materials. Recently, a new family of correlated honeycomb materials, in which strong spin-orbit coupling allows for various bond-dependent spin interactions, have been promising candidates to realize the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we study a model with bond-dependent spin interactions and show numerical evidence for the existence of an extended quantum spin liquid region, which is possibly connected to the Kitaev spin liquid state. These results are used to provide an explanation of the scattering continuum seen in neutron scattering on $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Topological edge states in single layers of honeycomb materials with strong spin-orbit coupling

We study possible edge states in single layers of honeycomb materials such as $α$-RuCl$_3$ and A$_2$IrO$_3$ (A=Li, Na) with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). These two dimensional systems exhibit linearly dispersing one-dimensional (1D) edge states when their 1D boundary forms a zig-zag shape. Using an effective tight-binding model based on first principles band structure calculations including Hubbard U and SOC, we find degenerate edge states at the zone center and zone boundary. The roles of chiral symmetry and time-reversal symmetry are presented. The implications to experimental signatures and the effects of disorder are also discussed.

Magnetic Orders Proximal to the Kitaev Limit in Frustrated Triangular Systems: Application to Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$

Frustrated transition metal compounds in which spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electron correlation work together have attracted much attention recently. In the case of 5$d$ transition metals, where SOC is large, $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ bands near the Fermi level are thought to encompass the essential physics of the material, potentially leading to a concrete realization of exotic magnetic phases such as the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we derive a spin model on a triangular lattice based on $j_\text{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospins that interact via antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ($J$) and Kitaev ($K$) exchanges, and crucially, an anisotropic $(Γ)$ exchange. Our classical analysis of the spin model reveals that, in addition to small regions of 120$^\circ$, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ / dual-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystal and nematic phases, the stripy and ferromagnetic phases dominate the $J$-$K$-$Γ$ phase diagram. We apply our model to the 5$d$ transition metal compound, Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, in which the Ir$^{4+}$ ions form layered two-dimensional triangular lattices. We compute the band structure and nearest-neighbor hopping parameters using ab-initio calculations. By combining our ab-initio and classical analyses, we predict that Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$ has a stripy ordered magnetic ground state.

Kitaev magnetism in honeycomb RuCl3 with intermediate spin-orbit coupling

Intensive studies of the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electronic correlations in transition metal compounds have recently been undertaken. In particular, $j_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 bands on a honeycomb lattice provide a pathway to realize Kitaev's exactly solvable spin model. However, since current wisdom requires strong atomic SOC to make $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ bands, studies have been limited to iridium oxides. Contrary to this expectation, we demonstrate how Kitaev interactions arise in 4$d$-orbital honeycomb $α$-RuCl$_3$, despite having significantly weaker SOC than the iridium oxides, via assistance from electron correlations. A strong coupling spin model for these correlation-assisted $j_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 bands is derived, in which large antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions emerge along with ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions. Our analyses suggest that the ground state is a zigzag-ordered phase lying close to the antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin liquid. Experimental implications for angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, neutron scattering, and optical conductivities are discussed.

Mass/Radius Constraints on the Quiescent Neutron Star in M13 Using Hydrogen and Helium Atmospheres

The mass and radius of the neutron star (NS) in low-mass X-ray binaries can be obtained by fitting the X-ray spectrum of the NS in quiescence, and the mass and radius constrains the properties of dense matter in NS cores. A critical ingredient for spectral fits is the composition of the NS atmosphere: hydrogen atmospheres are assumed in most prior work, but helium atmospheres are possible if the donor star is a helium white dwarf. Here we perform spectral fits to XMM, Chandra, and ROSAT data of a quiescent NS in the globular cluster M13. This NS has the smallest inferred radius from previous spectral fitting. Assuming an atmosphere composed of hydrogen, we find a significantly larger radius, more consistent with those from other quiescent NSs. With a helium atmosphere (an equally acceptable fit), we find even larger values for the radius.

The remodeling conjecture and the Faber-Pandharipande formula

In this note, we prove that the free energies F_g constructed from the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion applied to the curve mirror to C^3 reproduce the Faber-Pandharipande formula for genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of C^3. This completes the proof of the remodeling conjecture for C^3.
