Experimental and theoretical analysis of the upper critical field in FSF trilayers

The upper critical magnetic field H_{c2} in thin-film FSF trilayer spin-valve cores is studied experimentally and theoretically in geometries perpendicular and parallel to the heterostructure surface. The series of samples with variable thicknesses of the bottom and of the top Cu_{41}Ni_{59} F-layers are prepared in a single run, utilizing a wedge deposition technique. The critical field H_{c2} is measured in the temperature range $0.4-8$ K and for magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A transition from oscillatory to reentrant behavior of the superconducting transition temperature versus F-layers thickness, induced by an external magnetic field, has been observed for the first time. In order to properly interpret the experimental data, we develop a quasiclassical theory, enabling one to evaluate the temperature dependence of the critical field and the superconducting transition temperature for an arbitrary set of the system parameters. A fairly good agreement between our experimental data and theoretical predictions is demonstrated for all samples, using a single set of fit parameters. This confirms adequacy of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) physics in determining the unusual superconducting properties of the studied Cu_{41}Ni_{59}/Nb/Cu_{41}Ni_{59} spin-valve core trilayers.

Persistent current noise in normal and superconducting nanorings

We investigate fluctuations of persistent current (PC) in nanorings both with and without dissipation and decoherence. We demonstrate that such PC fluctuations may persist down to zero temperature provided there exists either interaction with an external environment or an external (periodic) potential produced, e.g., by quantum phase slips in superconducting nanorings. Provided quantum coherence is maintained in the system PC noise remains coherent and can be tuned by an external magnetic flux $Φ_x$ piercing the ring. If quantum coherence gets suppressed by interactions with a dissipative bath PC noise becomes incoherent and $Φ_x$-independent.

Dephasing of Cooper pairs and subgap electron transport in superconducting hybrids

We argue that electron-electron interactions fundamentally restrict the penetration length of Cooper pairs into a diffusive normal metal (N) from a superconductor (S). At low temperatures this Cooper pair dephasing length $L_φ$ remains finite and does not diverge at $T \to 0$. We evaluate the subgap conductance of NS hybrids in the presence of electron-electron interactions and demonstrate that this new length $L_φ$ can be directly extracted from conductance measurements in such structures.

Theory of a large thermoeffect in superconductors doped with magnetic impurities

We argue that parametrically strong enhancement of a thermoelectric current can be observed in conventional superconductors doped by magnetic impurities. This effect is caused by violation of the symmetry between electron-like and hole-like excitations due to formation of subgap Andreev bound states in the vicinity of magnetic impurities. We develop a quantitative theory of this effect and demonstrate that it can be detected in modern experiments.

Crossed Andreev reflection and spin-resolved non-local electron transport

The phenomenon of crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is known to play a key role in non-local electron transport across three-terminal normal-superconducting-normal (NSN) devices. Here we review our general theory of non-local charge transport in three-terminal disordered ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet (FSF) structures. We demonstrate that CAR is highly sensitive to electron spins and yields a rich variety of properties of non-local conductance which we describe non-perturbatively at arbitrary voltages, temperature, degree of disorder, spin-dependent interface transmissions and their polarizations. We demonstrate that magnetic effects have different implications: While strong exchange field suppresses disorder-induced electron interference in ferromagnetic electrodes, spin-sensitive electron scattering at SF interfaces can drive the total non-local conductance negative at sufficiently low energies. At higher energies magnetic effects become less important and the non-local resistance behaves similarly to the non-magnetic case. Our results can be applied to multi-terminal hybrid structures with normal, ferromagnetic and half-metallic electrodes and can be directly tested in future experiments.

Triplet superconductivity in a ferromagnetic vortex

We argue that odd-frequency triplet superconductivity can be conveniently realized in hybrid superconductor-ferromagnet (SF) structures with a ferromagnetic vortex. We demonstrate that due to proximity-induced long-range triplet pairing such SFS junctions can sustain appreciable supercurrent which can be directly measured in experiments.

Persistent current noise and electron-electron interactions

We analyze fluctuations of persistent current (PC) produced by a charged quantum particle moving in a ring and interacting with a dissipative environment formed by diffusive electron gas. We demonstrate that in the presence of interactions such PC fluctuations persist down to zero temperature. In the case of weak interactions and/or sufficiently small values of the ring radius $R$ PC noise remains coherent and can be tuned by external magnetic flux $Φ_x$ piercing the ring. In the opposite limit of strong interactions and/or large values of $R$ fluctuations in the electronic bath strongly suppress quantum coherence of the particle down to $T=0$ and induce incoherent $Φ_x$-independent current noise in the ring which persists even at $Φ_x=0$ when the average PC is absent.

Persistent current noise

We demonstrate that persistent current in meso- and nanorings may fluctuate down to zero temperature provided the current operator does not commute with the total Hamiltonian of the system. For a model of a quantum particle on a ring we explicitly evaluate PC noise power which has a form of sharp peaks which become broadened for multi-channel rings or in the presence of dissipation. PC noise can be tuned by an external magnetic flux which is a fundamental manifestation of quantum coherence in the system.

Shot noise and Coulomb effects on non-local electron transport in normal-superconducting-normal heterostructures

We argue that Coulomb interaction can strongly influence non-local electron transport in normal-superconducting-normal structures and emphasize direct relation between Coulomb effects and non-local shot noise. In the tunneling limit non-local differential conductance is found to have an S-like shape and can turn negative at non-zero bias. At high transmissions crossed Andreev reflection yields positive noise cross-correlations and Coulomb anti-blockade of non-local electron transport.

Weak localization, Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and decoherence in arrays of quantum dots

Combining scattering matrix theory with non-linear $σ$-model and Keldysh technique we develop a unified theoretical approach enabling one to non-perturbatively study the effect of electron-electron interactions on weak localization and Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in arbitrary arrays of quantum dots. Our model embraces (i) weakly disordered conductors (ii) strongly disordered conductors and (iii) metallic quantum dots. In all these cases at $T \to 0$ the electron decoherence time is found to saturate to a finite value determined by the universal formula which agrees quantitatively with numerous experimental results. Our analysis provides overwhelming evidence in favor of electron-electron interactions as a universal mechanism for zero temperature electron decoherence in disordered conductors.

Fluctuations of persistent current

We theoretically analyze equilibrium fluctuations of persistent current (PC) in nanorings. We demonstrate that these fluctuations persist down to zero temperature provided the current operator does not commute with the total Hamiltonian of the system. For a model of a quantum particle on a ring we explicitly evaluate PC noise power which has the form of sharp peaks at frequencies set by the corresponding interlevel distances. In rings with many conducting channels a much smoother and broader PC noise spectrum is expected. A specific feature of PC noise is that its spectrum can be tuned by an external magnetic flux indicating the presence of quantum coherence in the system.

Non-local spin-sensitive electron transport in diffusive proximity heterostructures

We formulate a quantitative theory of non-local electron transport in three-terminal disordered ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet structures. We demonstrate that magnetic effects have different implications: While strong exchange field suppresses disorder-induced electron interference in ferromagnetic electrodes, spin-sensitive electron scattering at superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces can drive the total non-local conductance negative at sufficiently low energies. At higher energies magnetic effects become less important and the non-local resistance behaves similarly to the non-magnetic case. Our predictions can be directly tested in future experiments on non-local electron transport in hybrid FSF structures.

Persistent currents in nanorings and quantum decoherence by Coulomb interaction

Employing instanton technique we evaluate equilibrium persistent current (PC) produced by a quantum particle moving in a periodic potential on a ring and interacting with a dissipative environment formed by diffusive electron gas. The model allows for detailed non-perturbative analysis of interaction effects and -- depending on the system parameters -- yields a rich structure of different regimes. We demonstrate that at low temperatures PC is exponentially suppressed at sufficiently large ring perimeters $2πR> L_φ$ where the dephasing length $L_φ$ is set by interactions and does not depend on temperature. This behavior represents a clear example of quantum decoherence by electron-electron interactions at $T\to 0$.

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in disordered nanorings with quantum dots: Effect of electron-electron interactions

We investigate the effect of electron-electron interactions on Aharonov-Bohm (AB) current oscillations in nanorings formed by a chain of metallic quantum dots. We demonstrate that electron-electron interactions cause electron dephasing thereby suppressing the amplitude of AB oscillations at all temperatures down to T=0. The crossover between thermal and quantum dephasing is found to be controlled by the ring perimeter. Our predictions can be directly tested in future experiments.

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in coupled quantum dots: Effect of electron-electron interactions

We theoretically analyze the effect of electron-electron interactions on Aharonov-Bohm (AB) current oscillations in ring-shaped systems with metallic quantum dots pierced by external magnetic field. We demonstrate that electron-electron interactions suppress the amplitude of AB oscillations $I_{AB}$ at all temperatures down to T=0 and formulate quantitative predictions which can be verified in future experiments. We argue that the main physical reason for such interaction-induced suppression of $I_{AB}$ is electron dephasing while Coulomb blockade effects remain insignificant in the case of metallic quantum dots considered here. We also emphasize a direct relation between our results and the so-called $P(E)$-theory describing tunneling of interacting electrons.

Josephson current in ballistic heterostructures with spin-active interfaces

We develop a general microscopic theory of dc Josephson effect in hybrid SNS structures with ballistic electrodes and spin-active NS interfaces. We establish a direct relation between the spectrum of Andreev levels and the Josephson current which contains complete information about non-trivial interplay between Andreev reflection and spin-dependent interface scattering. The system exhibits a rich structure of properties sensitive to spin-dependent barrier transmissions, spin-mixing angles, relative magnetization orientation of interfaces and the kinematic phase of scattered electrons. We analyze the current-phase relations and identify the conditions for the presence of a pi-junction state in the systems under consideration. We also analyze resonant enhancement of the supercurrent in gate-voltage-driven nanojunctions. As compared to the non-magnetic case, this effect can be strongly modified by spin-dependent scattering at NS interfaces.

Thermal fluctuations in superconducting nanowires

We re-analyze the problem of thermally activated phase slips (TAPS) which can dominate the behavior of sufficiently thin superconducting wires at temperatures close to $T_C$. With the aid of an effective action approach we evaluate the TAPS rate which turns out to exceed the rate found by D.E. McCumber and B.I. Halperin, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 1}, 1054 (1970) within the TDGL analysis by the factor $\sim (1-T/T_C)^{-1} \gg 1$. Additional differences in the results of these two approaches arise at bias currents close to the Ginzburg-Landau critical current where the TAPS rate becomes bigger. We also derive a simple formula for the voltage noise across the superconducting wire in terms of the TAPS rate. Our results can be verified in modern experiments with superconducting nanowires.

Josephson current and Andreev states in superconductor-half metal-superconductor heterostructures

We develop a detailed microscopic theory describing dc Josephson effect and Andreev bound states in superconducting junctions with a half-metal. In such systems the supercurrent is caused by triplet pairing states emerging due to spin-flip scattering at the interfaces between superconducting electrodes and the half-metal. For sufficiently clean metals we provide a detailed non-perturbative description of the Josephson current at arbitrary transmissions and spin-flip scattering parameters for both interfaces. Our analysis demonstrates that the behavior of both the Josephson current and Andreev bound states crucially depends on the strength of spin-flip scattering showing a rich variety of features which can be tested in future experiments.
