Physics Opportunities for the Fermilab Booster Replacement

This white paper presents opportunities afforded by the Fermilab Booster Replacement and its various options. Its goal is to inform the design process of the Booster Replacement about the accelerator needs of the various options, allowing the design to be versatile and enable, or leave the door open to, as many options as possible. The physics themes covered by the paper include searches for dark sectors and new opportunities with muons.

A practical way to regularize unfolding of sharply varying spectra with low data statistics

Unfolding is a well-established tool in particle physics. However, a naive application of the standard regularization techniques to unfold the momentum spectrum of protons ejected in the process of negative muon nuclear capture led to a result exhibiting unphysical artifacts. A finite data sample limited the range in which unfolding can be performed, thus introducing a cutoff. A sharply falling "true" distribution led to low data statistics near the cutoff, which exacerbated the regularization bias and produced an unphysical spike in the resulting spectrum. An improved approach has been developed to address these issues and is illustrated using a toy model. The approach uses full Poisson likelihood of data, and produces a continuous, physically plausible, unfolded distribution. The new technique has a broad applicability since spectra with similar features, such as sharply falling spectra, are common.

A precision measurement of the muon decay parameter delta

The muon decay parameter delta characterizes momentum dependence of the parity-violating muon decay asymmetry. A new measurement of delta has been performed using the first physics data recorded by the TWIST experiment at TRIUMF. The obtained value, delta=0.74964+-0.00066(stat.)+-0.00112(syst.), is consistent with the Standard Model expectation delta=3/4. This is the first determination of delta performed using a blind analysis technique. Combined with other data, the measurement sets new model-independent limits on effective right-handed couplings of the muon. Improved limits on the product of another muon decay parameter, xi, and the muon polarization in pion decay, Pmu, are obtained in the form: 0.9960<Pmu*xi<=xi<1.0040, at 90% confidence level. Implications for left-right symmetric models are discussed.

Muon Decay Spectrum: Leading Logarithmic Approximation

O(alpha^2 ln^2(m_mu/m_e)) QED corrections to the electron spectrum and angular distribution in muon decay are evaluated. Impact on the determination of Michel parameters is estimated. Current theoretical uncertainty in the muon decay distributions is discussed.
