Transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in magnetic field

We investigate the transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. To be able to treat scattering potentials of finite extent in magnetic field we use a mixed momentum-coordinate representation to obtain an integral equation for the multiband scattering matrix. For a large embedded quantum ring we are able to obtain Aharanov-Bohm type of oscillations with superimposed narrow resonances caused by interaction with quasi-bound states in the ring. We also employ scattering matrix approach to calculate the conductance through a semi-extended barrier or well in the wire. The numerical implementations we resort to in order to describe the cases of weak and intermediate magnetic field allow us to produce high resolution maps of the ``near field'' scattering wave functions, which are used to shed light on the underlying scattering processes.

Multi-mode transport through a quantum nanowire with two embedded dots

We investigate the conductance of a quantum wire with two embedded quantum dots using a T-matrix approach based on the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism. The quantum dots are represented by a quantum well with Gaussian shape and the wire is two-dimensional with parabolic confinement in the transverse direction. In a broad wire the transport can assume a strong nonadiabatic character and the conductance manifests effects caused by intertwined inter- and intra-dot processes that are identified by analysis of the ``nearfield'' probability distribution of the transported electrons.

Coherent electronic transport in a multimode quantum channel with Gaussian-type scatterers

Coherent electron transport through a quantum channel in the presence of a general extended scattering potential is investigated using a T-matrix Lippmann-Schwinger approach. The formalism is applied to a quantum wire with Gaussian type scattering potentials, which can be used to model a single impurity, a quantum dot or more complicated structures in the wire. The well known dips in the conductance in the presence of attractive impurities is reproduced. A resonant transmission peak in the conductance is seen as the energy of the incident electron coincides with an energy level in the quantum dot. The conductance through a quantum wire in the presence of an asymmetric potential are also shown. In the case of a narrow potential parallel to the wire we find that two dips appear in the same subband which we ascribe to two quasi bound states originating from the next evanescent mode.

Net current generation in a 1D quantum ring at zero magnetic field

We study a non-adiabatic excitation of an electron system in a 1D quantum ring radiated by a short THz pulse. The response of two models, a continuous and discrete, is explored. By introducing a spatial asymmetry in the external perturbation a net current can be generated in the ring at a zero magnetic field. Effect of impurities and ratchets are investigated in combination with symmetric and asymmetric external excitation.

Impurity and spin effects on the magneto-spectroscopy of a THz-modulated nanostructure

We present a grid-free DFT model appropriate to explore the time evolution of electronic states in a semiconductor nanostructure. The model can be used to investigate both the linear and the nonlinear response of the system to an external short-time perturbation in the THz regime. We use the model to study the effects of impurities on the magneto-spectroscopy of a two-dimensional electron gas in a nanostructure excited by an intense THz radiation. We do observe a reduction in the binding energy of the impurity with increasing excitation strength, and at a finite magnetic field we find a slow onset of collective spin-oscillations that can be made to vanish with a stronger excitation.

Non-adiabatic current generation in a finite width semiconductor ring

We consider a model of a semiconductor quantum ring of finite width in a constant perpendicular magnetic field. We show how a current of the same order as the persistent current can be generated non-adiabatically by a short intensive pulse in the Tera-Hertz regime.

Orbital and spin magnetization of a confined electronic system in the transition between a quantum dot and a ring

In order to understand the orbital and spin magnetization of a confined electronic system we analyze these ground state properties in the transition from a quantum dot to a quantum ring of finite thickness. The Coulomb interaction between the electrons is treated in the Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations and special care is taken to include also the contributions of the nonlocal current to the summation of the magnetic moments of the occupied states. We identify changes in the many-body structure of the ground state and in the magnetization curves versus the magnetic field and other parameters characterizing the system. We compare the results of two models for quantum dots (or rings), one with the electrons moving continuously in the system, and one with the electrons moving on a lattice.

Characterization of Bernstein modes in quantum dots

The dipole modes of non-parabolic quantum dots are studied by means of their current and density patterns as well as with their local absorption distribution. The anticrossing of the so-called Bernstein modes originates from the coupling with electron-hole excitations of the two Landau bands which are occupied at the corresponding magnetic fields. Non-quadratic terms in the potential cause an energy separation between bulk and edge current modes in the anticrossing region. On a local scale the fragmented peaks absorb energy in complementary spatial regions which evolve with the magnetic field.

From single dots to interacting arrays

We explore the structural changes in charge the density and the electron configuration of quantum dots caused by the presence of other dots in an array, and the interaction of neighboring dots. We discuss what recent measurements and calculation of the far-infrared absorption reveal about almost isolated quantum dots and investigate some aspects of the complex transition from isolated dots to dots with strongly overlapping electron density. We also address the the effects on the magnetization of such dot array.

Anisotropic scattering and quantum magnetoresistivities of a periodically modulated 2D electron gas

We calculate the longitudinal conductivities of a two-dimensional noninteracting electron gas in a uniform magnetic field and a lateral electric or magnetic periodic modulation in one spatial direction, in the quantum regime. We consider the effects of the electron-impurity scattering anisotropy through the vertex corrections on the Kubo formula, which are calculated with the Bethe-Salpeter equation, in the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that due to the scattering anisotropy the band conductivity increases, and the scattering conductivities decrease and become anisotropic. Our results are in qualitative agreement with recent experiments.

Hysteresis effect due to the exchange Coulomb interaction in short-period superlattices in tilted magnetic fields

We calculate the ground-state of a two-dimensional electron gas in a short-period lateral potential in magnetic field, with the Coulomb electron-electron interaction included in the Hartree-Fock approximation. For a sufficiently short period the dominant Coulomb effects are determined by the exchange interaction. We find numerical solutions of the self-consistent equations that have hysteresis properties when the magnetic field is tilted and increased, such that the perpendicular component is always constant. This behavior is a result of the interplay of the exchange interaction with the energy dispersion and the spin splitting. We suggest that hysteresis effects of this type could be observable in magneto-transport and magnetization experiments on quantum-wire and quantum-dot superlattices.

Magnetization in short-period mesoscopic electron systems

We calculate the magnetization of the two-dimensional electron gas in a short-period lateral superlattice, with the Coulomb interaction included in Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations. We compare the results for a finite, mesoscopic system modulated by a periodic potential, with the results for the infinite periodic system. In addition to the expected strong exchange effects, the size of the system, the type and the strength of the lateral modulation leave their fingerprints on the magnetization.

Finite size effects in the magnetization of periodic mesoscopic systems

We calculate the orbital magnetization of a confined 2DEG as a function of the number of electrons in the system. Size effects are investigated by systematically increasing the area of the confining region. The results for the finite system are compared to an infinite one, where the magnetization is calculated in the thermodynamic limit. In all calculations the electron-electron interaction is included in the Hartree approximation.

Memorization of short-range potential fluctuations in Landau levels

We calculate energy spectra of a two-dimensional electron system in a perpendicular magnetic field and periodic potentials of short periods. The Coulomb interaction is included within a screened Hartree-Fock approximation. The electrostatic screening is poor and the exchange interaction amplifies the energy dispersion. We obtain, by numerical iterations, self-consistent solutions that have a hysteresis-like property. With increasing amplitude of the external potential the energy dispersion and the electron density become periodic, and they remain stable when the external potential is reduced to zero. We explain this property in physical terms and speculate that a real system could memorize short-range potential fluctuations after the potential has been turned off.

Collective modes and the far-infrared absorption of the two-dimensional electron gas in a periodic quantizing magnetic field

We investigate the far-infrared (FIR) absorption of a two-dimensional electron gas in a periodically modulated quantizing magnetic field. The magnetic field varies along only one spatial direction and the external time-dependent electric field is linearly polarized along that axis. The mutual Coulomb interaction of the electrons is treated self-consistently in the ground state and in the absorption calculation within the Hartree approximation. The effects of the magnetic material on top of the heterostructure as a grating coupler is included in the time-dependent incident FIR electric field. We show that similar to an electric modulation, the absorption can be directly correlated to the underlying electronic energy bands. In addition, the magnetic modulation leads to absorption spectra with a richer structure due to the quite different static response of the electron density to the modulation.

The FIR-absorption of short period quantum wires and the transition from one to two dimensions

We investigate the FIR-absorption of short period parallel quantum wires in a perpendicular quantizing magnetic field. The external time-dependent electric field is linearly polarized along the wire modulation. The mutual Coulomb interaction of the electrons is treated self-consistently in the ground state and in the absorption calculation within the Hartree approximation. We consider the effects of a metal gate grating coupler, with the same or with a different period as the wire modulation, on the absorption. The evolution of the magnetoplasmon in the nonlocal region where it is split into several Bernstein modes is discussed in the transition from: narrow to broad wires, and isolated to overlapping wires. We show that in the case of narrow and not strongly modulated wires the absorption can be directly correlated with the underlying electronic bandstructure.

Density modulation and electrostatic self-consistency in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a periodic quantizing magnetic field

We calculate the single-particle states of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a perpendicular quantizing magnetic field, which is periodic in one direction of the electron layer. We discuss the modulation of the electron density in this system and compare it with that of a 2DEG in a periodic electrostatic potential. We take account of the induced potential within the Hartree approximation, and calculate self-consistently the density fluctuations and effective energy bands. The electrostatic effects on the spectrum depend strongly on the temperature and on the ratio between the cyclotron radius $R_c$ and the length scale $a_{δρ}$ of the density variations. We find that $a_{δρ}$ can be equal to the modulation period $a$, but also much smaller. For $R_c \sim a_{δρ}$ the spectrum in the vicinity of the chemical potential remains essentially the same as in the noninteracting system, while for $R_c \ll a_{δρ}$ it may be drastically changed by the Hartree potential: For noninteger filling factors the energy dispersion is reduced, like in the case of an electrostatic modulation, whereas for even-integer filling factors, on the contrary, the dispersion may be amplified.

Coulomb effects on the quantum transport of a two-dimensional electron system in periodic electric and magnetic fields

The magnetoresistivity tensor of an interacting two-dimensional electron system with a lateral and unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation, in a perpendicular quantizing magnetic field, is calculated within the Kubo formalism. The influence of the spin splitting of the Landau bands and of the density of states (DOS) on the internal structure of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations is analyzed. The Coulomb electron - electron interaction is responsible for strong screening and exchange effects and is taken into account in a screened Hartree-Fock approximation, in which the exchange contribution is calculated self-consistently with the DOS at the Fermi level. This approximation describes both the exchange enhancement of the spin splitting and the formation of compressible edge strips, unlike the simpler Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations, which yield either the one or the other.
