World-Line Actions in Weyl Geometry

In this note we construct, from a gauge theory perspective, the world-line action for a particle moving on a time-like curve in Weyl geometry. The action we find is dimensionless, Weyl invariant, additive and, in general, non-local due to an open Wilson line which we have to add in order to account for a general Weyl field. In special cases, this Wilson line can be local, but the geometry becomes integrable. The action can not be used to measure the proper time as it is dimensionless and no mass parameter is allowed in the symmetric phase of the theory. We show that the usual conditions for defining proper time: affine parametrization, dimension of time and additivity supplemented by the requirement of Weyl invariance can not be fulfilled simultaneously and therefore no satisfactory notion of proper time exists in the symmetric phase. Under spontaneous symmetry breaking the particle acquires a mass, the action becomes Riemannian and the proper time can be again defined. We also construct a classically equivalent quadratic action by using an einbein on the world-line and show that the non-locality can be seen to arise from integrating out a constrained field.

The Gauge Theory of Weyl Group and its Interpretation as Weyl Quadratic Gravity

In this paper we give an extensive description of Weyl quadratic gravity as the gauge theory of the Weyl group. The previously discovered (vectorial) torsion/non-metricity equivalence is shown to be built-in as it corresponds to a redefinition of the generators of the Weyl group. We present a generalisation of the torsion/non-metricity duality which includes, aside from the vector, also a traceless 3-tensor with two antisymmetric indices and vanishing skew symmetric part. A discussion of this relation in the case of minimally coupled matter fields is given. We further point out that a Rarita-Schwinger field can couple minimally to all the components of torsion and some components of non-metricity. Alongside we present the same gauge construction for the Poincar\'e and conformal groups. We show that even though the Weyl group is a subgroup of the conformal group, the gauge theory of the latter is actually only a special case of Weyl quadratic gravity.

Two-field constant roll inflation

Starting from the idea of realising constant roll inflation in string theory we develop the constant roll formalism for two scalar fields. We derive the two-field potential which is compatible with a constant roll regime and discuss possible applications to string-models.

M-theory Compactifications to Three Dimensions with M2-brane Potentials

We study a class of compactifications of M-theory to three dimensions that preserve N=2 supersymmetry and which have the defining feature that a probe space-time filling M2 brane feels a non-trivial potential on the internal manifold. Using M-theory/F-theory duality such compactifications include the uplifts of 4-dimensional N=1 type IIB compactifications with D3 potentials to strong coupling. We study the most general 8-dimensional manifolds supporting these properties, derive the most general flux that induces an M2 potential, and show that it is parameterised in terms of two real vectors. We study the supersymmetry equations when only this flux is present and show that over the locus where the M2 potential is non-vanishing the background takes the form of a Calabi-Yau three-fold fibered over a 2-dimensional base spanned by the flux vectors, while at the minima of the potential the flux vanishes. Allowing also for non-vanishing four-form flux with one leg in the internal directions we find that the Calabi-Yau three-fold in the fibration is replaced by an SU(3)-structure manifold with torsion classes satisfying 2 W_4=-W_5.

F-theory compactifications on manifolds with SU(3) structure

In this paper we derive part of the low energy action corresponding to F-theory compactifications on specific eight manifolds with SU(3) structure. The setup we use can actually be reduced to compactification of six-dimensional supergravity coupled to tensor multiplets on a T^2 with duality twists. The resulting theory is a N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to vector-tensor multiplets.

Heterotic type IIA duality with fluxes - towards the complete story

In this paper we study the heterotic type IIA duality when fluxes are turned on. We show that many of the known fluxes are dual to each other and claim that certain fluxes on the heterotic side require that the type IIA picture is lifted to M or even F-theory compactifications with geometric fluxes.

Moduli Stabilisation in Heterotic Models with Standard Embedding

In this note we analyse the issue of moduli stabilisation in 4d models obtained from heterotic string compactifications on manifolds with SU(3) structure with standard embedding. In order to deal with tractable models we first integrate out the massive fields. We argue that one can not only integrate out the moduli fields, but along the way one has to truncate also the corresponding matter fields. We show that the effective models obtained in this way do not have satisfactory solutions. We also look for stabilised vacua which take into account the presence of the matter fields. We argue that this also fails due to a no-go theorem for Minkowski vacua in the moduli sector which we prove in the end. The main ingredient for this no-go theorem is the constraint on the fluxes which comes from the Bianchi identity.

Heterotic compactifications on SU(2)-structure backgrounds

In this paper we study the reduction of heterotic string theory on SU(2)-structure backgrounds. We compute the bosonic low-energy gauged N=2 supergravity specified by the Killing vectors corresponding to the gauged isometries. We check that the obtained Lagrangian is consistent with the one of N=2 local supersymmetry. We also determine the Killing prepotentials.

A Note on Moduli Stabilisation in Heterotic Models in the Presence of Matter Fields

In this brief note we analyse a toy model which can be derived from heterotic string compactifications on half-flat manifolds with SU(3) structure at first order in α' (ie including matter fields). We show that for this model, finding solutions with viable gauge group poses the same problems as finding solutions in the absence of matter fields.

Non-Abelian structures in compactifications of M-theory on seven-manifolds with SU(3) structure

We study M-theory compactified on a specific class of seven-dimensional manifolds with SU(3) structure. The manifolds can be viewed as a fibration of an arbitrary Calabi-Yau threefold over a circle, with a U-duality twist around the circle. In some cases we find that in the four dimensional low energy effective theory a (broken) non-Abelian gauge group appears. Furthermore, such compactifications are shown to be dual to previously analyzed compactifications of the heterotic string on K3 x T^2, with background gauge field fluxes on the T^2.

Heterotic String Compactifications on Half-flat Manifolds II

In this paper, we continue the analysis of heterotic string compactifications on half-flat mirror manifolds by including the 10-dimensional gauge fields. It is argued, that the heterotic Bianchi identity is solved by a variant of the standard embedding. Then, the resulting gauge group in four dimensions is still E6 despite the fact that the Levi-Civita connection has SO(6) holonomy. We derive the associated four-dimensional effective theories including matter field terms for such compactifications. The results are also extended to more general manifolds with SU(3) structure.

Towards Minkowski Vacua in Type II String Compactifications

We study the vacuum structure of compactifications of type II string theories on orientifolds with SU(3)xSU(3) structure. We argue that generalised geometry enables us to treat these non-geometric compactifications using a supergravity analysis in a way very similar to geometric compactifications. We find supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with all the moduli stabilised at weak string coupling and all the tadpole conditions satisfied. Generically the value of the moduli fields in the vacuum is parametrically controlled and can be taken to arbitrarily large values.

Heterotic-type IIA duality with fluxes

In this paper we study a possible non-perturbative dual of the heterotic string compactified on K3 x T^2 in the presence of background fluxes. We show that type IIA string theory compactified on manifolds with SU(3) structure can account for a subset of the possible heterotic fluxes. This extends our previous analysis to a case of a non-perturbative duality with fluxes.

M-theory on seven-dimensional manifolds with SU(3) structure

In this paper we study M-theory compactifications on seven-dimensional manifolds with SU(3) structure. As such manifolds naturally pick out a specific direction, the resulting effective theory can be cast into a form which is similar to type IIA compactifications to four dimensions. We derive the gravitino mass matrix in four dimensions and show that for different internal manifolds (torsion classes) the vacuum preserves either no supersymmetry, or N=2 supersymmetry or, through spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking, N=1 supersymmetry. For the latter case we derive the effective N=1 theory and give explicit examples where all the moduli are stabilised without the need of non-perturbative effects.

Moduli Stabilisation in Heterotic String Compactifications

In this paper we analyze the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure. We first study the effective theories obtained from compactifications on half-flat manifolds and show that solutions which stabilise the moduli at acceptable values are hard to find. We then derive the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds. It is shown that these effective theories are consistent with four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and that the superpotential can be obtained by a Gukov-Vafa-Witten type formula. Within these generalised models, we find consistent supersymmetric (AdS) vacua at weak gauge coupling, provided we allow for general internal gauge bundles. In simple cases we perform a counting of such vacua and find that a fraction of about 1/1000 leads to a gauge coupling consistent with gauge unification.

M-theory Compactifications on Manifolds with G2 Structure

In this paper we study M-theory compactifications on manifolds of G2 structure. By computing the gravitino mass term in four dimensions we derive the general form for the superpotential which appears in such compactifications and show that beside the normal flux term there is a term which appears only for non-minimal G2 structure. We further apply these results to compactifications on manifolds with weak G2 holonomy and make a couple of statements regarding the deformation space of such manifolds. Finally we show that the superpotential derived from fermionic terms leads to the potential that can be derived from the explicit compactification, thus strengthening the conjectures we make about the space of deformations of manifolds with weak G2 holonomy.

Heterotic compactifications and nearly-Kahler manifolds

We propose that under certain conditions heterotic string compactifications on half-flat and nearly-Kahler manifolds are equivalent. Based on this correspondence we argue that the moduli space of the nearly-Kahler manifolds under discussion consists only of the Kahler deformations moduli space and there is no correspondent for the complex structure deformations.

Heterotic on Half-flat

We study the effective action of the heterotic string compactified on particular half-flat manifolds which arise in the context of mirror symmetry with NS-NS flux. We explicitly derive the superpotential and Kahler potential at lowest order in alpha' by a reduction of the bosonic action. The superpotential contains new terms depending on the Kahler moduli which originate from the intrinsic geometrical flux of the half-flat manifolds. A generalized Gukov formula, valid for all manifolds with SU(3) structure, is derived from the gravitino mass term. For the half-flat manifolds it leads to a superpotential in agreement with our explicit bosonic calculation. We also discuss the inclusion of gauge fields.
