On the irreducibility of locally metric connections

A locally metric connection on a smooth manifold $M$ is a torsion-free connection $D$ on $TM$ with compact restricted holonomy group $\mathrm{Hol}_0(D)$. If the holonomy representation of such a connection is irreducible, then $D$ preserves a conformal structure on $M$. Under some natural geometric assumption on the life-time of incomplete geodesics, we prove that conversely, a locally metric connection $D$ preserving a conformal structure on a compact manifold $M$ has irreducible holonomy representation, unless $\mathrm{Hol}_0(D)=0$ or $D$ is the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian metric on $M$. This result generalizes Gallot's theorem on the irreducibility of Riemannian cones to a much wider class of connections. As an application, we give the geometric description of compact conformal manifolds carrying a tame closed Weyl connection with non-generic holonomy.

Conformally related Riemannian metrics with non-generic holonomy

We show that if a compact connected $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ has a conformal class containing two non-homothetic metrics $g$ and $\tilde g=e^{2φ}g$ with non-generic holonomy, then after passing to a finite covering, either $n=4$ and $(M,g,\tilde g)$ is an ambikähler manifold, or $n\ge 6$ is even and $(M,g,\tilde g)$ is obtained by the Calabi Ansatz from a polarized Hodge manifold of dimension $n-2$, or both $g$ and $\tilde g$ have reducible holonomy, $M$ is locally diffeomorphic to a product $M_1\times M_2\times M_3$, the metrics $g$ and $\tilde g$ can be written as $g=g_1+g_2+e^{-2φ}g_3$ and $\tilde g=e^{2φ}(g_1+g_2)+g_3$ for some Riemannian metrics $g_i$ on $M_i$, and $φ$ is the pull-back of a non-constant function on $M_2$.

On toric locally conformally Kähler manifolds

We study compact toric strict locally conformally Kähler manifolds. We show that the Kodaira dimension of the underlying complex manifold is $-\infty$ and that the only compact complex surfaces admitting toric strict locally conformally Kähler metrics are the diagonal Hopf surfaces. We also show that every toric Vaisman manifold has lcK rank 1 and is isomorphic to the mapping torus of an automorphism of a toric compact Sasakian manifold.

Local Geometry of Even Clifford Structures on Conformal Manifolds

We introduce the concept of a Clifford-Weyl structure on a conformal manifold, which consists of an even Clifford structure parallel with respect to the tensor product of a metric connection on the Clifford bundle and a Weyl structure on the manifold. We show that the Weyl structure is necessarily closed except for some "generic" low-dimensional instances, where explicit examples of non-closed Clifford-Weyl structures can be constructed.

Killing tensors on tori

We show that Killing tensors on conformally flat $n$-dimensional tori whose conformal factor only depends on one variable, are polynomials in the metric and in the Killing vector fields. In other words, every first integral of the geodesic flow polynomial in the momenta on the sphere bundle of such a torus is linear in the momenta.

Killing and Conformal Killing tensors

We introduce an appropriate formalism in order to study conformal Killing (symmetric) tensors on Riemannian manifolds. We reprove in a simple way some known results in the field and obtain several new results, like the classification of conformal Killing $2$-tensors on Riemannian products of compact manifolds, Weitzenböck formulas leading to non-existence results, and construct various examples of manifolds with conformal Killing tensors.

Conformal Killing 2-forms on 4-dimensional manifolds

We study 4-dimensional simply connected Lie groups $G$ with left-invariant Riemannian metric $g$ admitting non-trivial conformal Killing 2-forms. We show that either the real line defined by such a form is invariant under the group action, or the metric is half conformally flat. In the first case, the problem reduces to the study of invariant conformally Kähler structures, whereas in the second case, the Lie algebra of $G$ belongs (up to homothety) to a finite list of families of metric Lie algebras.

Conformally related Kähler metrics and the holonomy of lcK manifolds

A locally conformally Kähler (lcK) manifold is a complex manifold $(M,J)$ together with a Hermitian metric $g$ which is conformal to a Kähler metric in the neighbourhood of each point. In this paper we obtain three classification results in locally conformally Kähler geometry. The first one is the classification of conformal classes on compact manifolds containing two non-homothetic Kähler metrics. The second one is the classification of compact Einstein locally conformally Kähler manifolds. The third result is the classification of the possible (restricted) Riemannian holonomy groups of compact locally conformally Kähler manifolds. We show that every locally (but not globally) conformally Kähler compact manifold of dimension $2n$ has holonomy $\mathrm{SO}(2n)$, unless it is Vaisman, in which case it has restricted holonomy $\mathrm{SO}(2n-1)$. We also show that the restricted holonomy of a proper globally conformally Kähler compact manifold of dimension $2n$ is either $\mathrm{SO}(2n)$, or $\mathrm{SO}(2n-1)$, or $\mathrm{U}(n)$, and we give the complete description of the possible solutions in the last two cases.

Killing 2-forms in dimension 4

A Killing $p$-form on a Riemannian manifold is a $p$-form whose covariant derivative is totally anti-symmetric. In this paper we give the complete (local) description of 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (M,g) carrying non-parallel Killing 2-forms $φ$. If $M$ is connected and oriented, we show that there exists a dense open subset of $M$ on which one of the three exclusive situations holds: either $ϕ$ is everywhere degenerate and $g$ is conformal to a product metric, or $g$ is conformal to an ambikähler metric obtained via the Calabi construction from a polarized Riemannian surface, or $g$ is conformal to an ambitoric structure of hyperbolic type, and depends locally on two functions of one variable. We also give compact examples, by constructing infinite-dimensional families of Riemannian metrics carrying Killing 2-forms of each of the above types on $S^4$ and on Hirzebruch surfaces.

Compact lcK manifolds with parallel vector fields

We show that for $n>2$ a compact locally conformally Kähler manifold $(M^{2n},g,J)$ carrying a non-trivial parallel vector field is either Vaisman, or globally conformally Kähler, determined in an explicit way by some compact Kähler manifold of dimension $2n-2$.

Generalized Killing spinors and Lagrangian graphs

We study generalized Killing spinors on the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$, which turn out to be related to Lagrangian embeddings in the nearly Kähler manifold $S^3\times S^3$ and to great circle flows on $\mathbb{S}^3$. Using our methods we generalize a well known result of Gluck and Gu concerning divergence-free geodesic vector fields on the sphere and we show that the space of Lagrangian submanifolds of $S^3\times S^3$ has at least three connected components.

Ricci surfaces

A Ricci surface is a Riemannian 2-manifold $(M,g)$ whose Gaussian curvature $K$ satisfies $KΔK+g(dK,dK)+4K^3=0$. Every minimal surface isometrically embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a Ricci surface of non-positive curvature. At the end of the 19th century Ricci-Curbastro has proved that conversely, every point $x$ of a Ricci surface has a neighborhood which embeds isometrically in $\mathbb{R}^3$ as a minimal surface, provided $K(x)<0$. We prove this result in full generality by showing that Ricci surfaces can be locally isometrically embedded either minimally in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or maximally in $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$, including near points of vanishing curvature. We then develop the theory of closed Ricci surfaces, possibly with conical singularities, and construct classes of examples in all genera $g\geq 2$.

Homogeneous almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds

An almost quaternion-Hermitian structure on a Riemannian manifold $(M^{4n},g)$ is a reduction of the structure group of $M$ to $\mathrm{Sp}(n)\mathrm{Sp}(1)\subset \mathrm{SO}(4n)$. In this paper we show that a compact simply connected homogeneous almost quaternion-Hermitian manifold of non-vanishing Euler characteristic is either a Wolf space, or $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^2$, or the complex quadric $\mathrm{SO}(7)/\mathrm{U}(3)$.

Homogeneous locally conformally Kähler manifolds

It is known that automorphism group $G$ of a compact homogeneous locally conformally Kähler manifold $M=G/H$ has at least a 1-dimensional center. We prove that the center of $G$ is at most 2-dimensional, and that if its dimension is 2, then $M$ is Vaisman and isometric to a mapping torus of an isometry of a homogeneous Sasakian manifold.

The Cauchy problems for Einstein metrics and parallel spinors

We show that in the analytic category, given a Riemannian metric $g$ on a hypersurface $M\subset \Z$ and a symmetric tensor $W$ on $M$, the metric $g$ can be locally extended to a Riemannian Einstein metric on $Z$ with second fundamental form $W$, provided that $g$ and $W$ satisfy the constraints on $M$ imposed by the contracted Codazzi equations. We use this fact to study the Cauchy problem for metrics with parallel spinors in the real analytic category and give an affirmative answer to a question raised in Bär, Gauduchon, Moroianu (2005). We also answer negatively the corresponding questions in the smooth category.

Higher rank homogeneous Clifford structures

We give an upper bound for the rank $r$ of homogeneous (even) Clifford structures on compact manifolds of non-vanishing Euler characteristic. More precisely, we show that if $r=2^a\cdot b$ with $b$ odd, then $r\le 9$ for $a=0$, $r\le 10$ for $a=1$, $r\le 12$ for $a=2$ and $r\le 16$ for $a\ge 3$. Moreover, we describe the four limiting cases and show that there is exactly one solution in each case.

Generalized Killing spinors on Einstein manifolds

We study generalized Killing spinors on compact Einstein manifolds with positive scalar curvature. This problem is related to the existence compact Einstein hypersurfaces in manifolds with parallel spinors, or equivalently, in Riemannian products of flat spaces, Calabi-Yau, hyperkaehler, G_2 and Spin(7) manifolds.
