The finitary content of sunny nonexpansive retractions

We use techniques of proof mining to extract a uniform rate of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for the strong convergence of approximants to fixed points of uniformly continuous pseudocontractive mappings in Banach spaces which are uniformly convex and uniformly smooth, i.e. a slightly restricted form of the classical result of Reich. This is made possible by the existence of a modulus of uniqueness specific to uniformly convex Banach spaces and by the arithmetization of the use of the limit superior. The metastable convergence can thus be proved in a system which has the same provably total functions as first-order arithmetic and therefore one may interpret the resulting proof in Gödel's system $T$ of higher-type functionals. The witness so obtained is then majorized (in the sense of Howard) in order to produce the final bound, which is shown to be definable in the subsystem $T_1$. This piece of information is further used to obtain rates of metastability to results which were previously only analyzed from the point of view of proof mining in the context of Hilbert spaces, i.e. the convergence of the iterative schemas of Halpern and Bruck.

Proof mining in $L^p$ spaces

We obtain an equivalent implicit characterization of $L^p$ Banach spaces that is amenable to a logical treatment. Using that, we obtain an axiomatization for such spaces into a higher-order logical system, the kind of which is used in proof mining, a research program that aims to obtain the hidden computational content of mathematical proofs using tools from mathematical logic. As an aside, we obtain a concrete way of formalizing $L^p$ spaces in positive-bounded logic. The axiomatization is followed by a corresponding metatheorem in the style of proof mining. We illustrate its use with the derivation for this class of spaces of the standard modulus of uniform convexity.

The asymptotic behaviour of convex combinations of firmly nonexpansive mappings

We show that in the framework of CAT(0) spaces, any convex combination of two mappings which are firmly nonexpansive -- or which satisfy the more general property $(P_2)$ -- is asymptotically regular, conditional on its fixed point set being nonempty, and, in addition, also $Δ$-convergent to such a fixed point. These results are established by the construction and study of a convex combination metric on the Cartesian square of a CAT(0) space. We also derive a uniform rate of asymptotic regularity in the sense of proof mining. All these results are then interpreted in the special case of the mappings being projections onto closed, convex sets.

An abstract proximal point algorithm

The proximal point algorithm is a widely used tool for solving a variety of convex optimization problems such as finding zeros of maximally monotone operators, fixed points of nonexpansive mappings, as well as minimizing convex functions. The algorithm works by applying successively so-called "resolvent" mappings associated to the original object that one aims to optimize. In this paper we abstract from the corresponding resolvents employed in these problems the natural notion of jointly firmly nonexpansive families of mappings. This leads to a streamlined method of proving weak convergence of this class of algorithms in the context of complete CAT(0) spaces (and hence also in Hilbert spaces). In addition, we consider the notion of uniform firm nonexpansivity in order to similarly provide a unified presentation of a case where the algorithm converges strongly. Methods which stem from proof mining, an applied subfield of logic, yield in this situation computable and low-complexity rates of convergence.

Effective strong convergence of the proximal point algorithm in CAT(0) spaces

We apply methods of proof mining to obtain uniform quantitative bounds on the strong convergence of the proximal point algorithm for finding minimizers of convex, lower semicontinuous proper functions in CAT(0) spaces. Thus, for uniformly convex functions we compute rates of convergence, while, for totally bounded CAT(0) spaces we apply methods introduced by Kohlenbach, the first author and Nicolae to compute rates of metastability.

An application of proof mining to the proximal point algorithm in CAT(0) spaces

We compute, using techniques originally introduced by Kohlenbach, the first author and Nicolae, uniform rates of metastability for the proximal point algorithm in the context of CAT(0) spaces (as first considered by Bacak), specifically for the case where the ambient space is totally bounded. This result is part of the program of proof mining, which aims to apply methods of mathematical logic with the purpose of extracting quantitative information out of ordinary mathematical proofs, which may not be necessarily constructive.

Quantitative results on the Ishikawa iteration of Lipschitz pseudo-contractions

We compute uniform rates of metastability for the Ishikawa iteration of a Lipschitz pseudo-contractive self-mapping of a compact convex subset of a Hilbert space. This extraction is an instance of the proof mining program that aims to apply tools from mathematical logic in order to extract the hidden quantitative content of mathematical proofs. We prove our main result by applying methods developed by Kohlenbach, the first author and Nicolae for obtaining quantitative versions of strong convergence results for generalized Fejér monotone sequences in compact subsets of metric spaces.

Codensity and Stone spaces

We present a detailed computation of two codensity monads associated to two canonical functors -- the inclusion functor of FinSet into Top and the inclusion functor of the category of the powers of the Sierpinski space into Top. We show that the essential images of the two monads are the categories of Stone spaces and of sober spaces, respectively. A new motivation for defining these classes of spaces is therefore obtained.

A note on the Mann iteration for $k$-strict pseudocontractions in Banach spaces

We show that a variant of a function defined by Cholamjiak and Suantai can be used to characterize 2-uniform smoothness. We then obtain greatly simplified proofs of a convergence theorem of Marino and Xu and of one of Zhou using a generalization of a lemma of Browder and Petryshyn and the aforementioned characterization. We also obtain more easily rates of asymptotic regularity corresponding to the studied iterations. Finally, we derive a way to relate two constants which are characteristic to 2-uniformly smooth spaces.

Effective results on a fixed point algorithm for families of nonlinear mappings

We use proof mining techniques to obtain a uniform rate of asymptotic regularity for the instance of the parallel algorithm used by López-Acedo and Xu to find common fixed points of finite families of $k$-strict pseudocontractive self-mappings of convex subsets of Hilbert spaces. We show that these results are guaranteed by a number of logical metatheorems for classical and semi-intuitionistic systems.
