Interaction of microwave photons with nanostructured magnetic metasurfaces

A theoretical formalism for the description of the interaction of microwave photons with a thin (compared to the photon wavelength) magnetic metasurface comprised of dipolarly interacting nano-scale magnetic elements is developed. A scattering matrix describing the processes of photon transmission and reflection at the metasurface boundary is derived. As an example of the use of the developed formalism, it is demonstrated, that the introduction of a magnetic metasurface inside a microstrip electromagnetic waveguide quantitatively changes the dispersion relation of the fundamental waveguide mode, opening a non-propagation frequency band gap in the waveguide spectrum. The frequency position and the width of the band gap are dependent on the waveguide thickness, and can be controlled dynamically by switching the magnetic ground state of the metasurface. For sufficiently thin waveguides the position of the band gap is shifted from the resonance absorption frequency of the metasurface. In such a case, the magnetic metasurface inside a waveguide works as an efficient reflector, as the energy absorption in the metasurface is small, and most of the electromagnetic energy inside the non-propagation band gap is reflected.

Bias-free spin-wave phase shifter for magnonic logic

A design of a magnonic phase shifter operating without an external bias magnetic field is proposed. The phase shifter uses a localized collective spin wave mode propagating along a domain wall "waveguide" in a dipolarly-coupled magnetic dot array existing in a chessboard antiferromagnetic (CAFM) ground state. It is demonstrated numerically that remagnetization of a single magnetic dot adjacent to the domain wall waveguide introduces a controllable phase shift in the propagating spin wave mode without significant change of the mode amplitude. It is also demonstrated that a logic XOR gate can be realized in the same system.

Theoretical formalism for collective spin-wave edge excitations in arrays of dipolarly interacting magnetic nanodots

A general theory of edge spin wave excitations in semi-infinite and finite periodic arrays of magnetic nanodots existing in a spatially uniform magnetization ground state is developed. The theory is formulated using a formalism of multi-vectors of magnetization dynamics, which allows one to study edge excitations in arrays having arbitrary complex primitive cells and lattice geometry. The developed formalism can describe edge excitations localized both at the physical edges of the array and at the internal "domain walls" separating array regions existing in different static magnetization states. Using a perturbation theory in the framework of the developed formalism it is possible to calculate damping of edge modes and their excitation by external variable magnetic fields. The theory is illustrated on the following practically important examples: (i) calculation of the FMR absorption in a finite nanodot array having the shape of a right triangle, (ii) calculation of nonreciprocal spin wave spectra of edge modes, including modes at the physical edges of an array and modes at the domain walls inside an array, (iii) study of the influence of the domain wall modes on the FMR spectrum of an array existing in a non-ideal chessboard antiferromagnetic ground state.

Spin wave mediated unidirectional Vortex Core Reversal by Two Orthogonal Monopolar Field Pulses: The Essential Role of Three-dimensional Magnetization Dynamics

Scanning transmission x-ray microscopy is employed to investigate experimentally the reversal of the magnetic vortex core polarity in cylindrical Ni81Fe19 nanodisks triggered by two orthogonal monopolar magnetic field pulses with peak amplitude $B_0$, pulse length $τ$=60 ps and delay time $Δ$t in the range from -400 ps to +400 ps between the two pulses. The two pulses are oriented in-plane in the x- and y-direction. We have experimentally studied vortex core reversal as function of $B_0$ and $Δ$t. The resulting phase diagram shows large regions of unidirectional vortex core switching where the switching threshold is modulated due to resonant amplification of azimuthal spin waves. The switching behavior changes dramatically depending on whether the first pulse is applied in the x- or the y-direction. This asymmetry can be reproduced by three-dimensional micromagnetic simulations but not by two-dimensional simulations. This behavior demonstrates that in contrast to previous experiments on vortex core reversal the three-dimensionality in the dynamics is essential here.

Three-dimensional Character of the Magnetization Dynamics in Magnetic Vortex Structures - Hybridization of Flexure Gyromodes with Spin Waves

Three-dimensional linear spin-wave eigenmodes of a Permalloy disk having finite thickness are studied by micromagnetic simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The eigenmodes found in the simulations are interpreted as linear superpositions (hybridizations) of 'approximate' three-dimensional eigenmodes, which are the fundamental gyromode $G_0$, the spin-wave modes and the higher-order gyromodes $G_N$ (flexure modes), the thickness dependence of which is represented by perpendicular standing spin waves. This hybridization leads to new and surprising dependencies of the mode frequencies on the disk thickness. The three-dimensional character of the eigenmodes is essential to explain the recent experimental results on vortex-core reversal observed in relatively thick Permalloy disks.

Noise properties of a resonance-type spin-torque microwave detector

We analyze performance of a resonance-type spin-torque microwave detector (STMD) in the presence of noise and reveal two distinct regimes of STMD operation. In the first (high-frequency) regime the minimum detectable microwave power $P_{\rm min}$ is limited by the low-frequency Johnson-Nyquist noise and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of STMD is proportional to the input microwave power $P_{\rm RF}$. In the second (low-frequency) regime $P_{\rm min}$ is limited by the magnetic noise, and the SNR is proportional to $\sqrt{P_{\rm RF}}$. The developed formalism can be used for the optimization of the practical noise-handling parameters of a STMD.

Parametric excitation of a magnetic nanocontact by a microwave field

We demonstrate that magnetic oscillations of a current-biased magnetic nanocontact can be parametrically excited by a microwave field applied at twice the resonant frequency of the oscillation. The threshold microwave amplitude for the onset of the oscillation decreases with increasing bias current, and vanishes at the transition to the auto-oscillation regime. The parametrically excited oscillation mode is the same as the one in the auto-oscillation regime, enabling studies of both the passive and the active dynamics of the oscillator. Theoretical analysis shows that measurements of parametric excitation provide quantitative information about the relaxation rate, the spin transfer efficiency, and the nonlinearity of the nanomagnetic system.

Oscillatory transient regime in the forced dynamics of a spin torque nano-oscillator

We demonstrate that the transient non-autonomous dynamics of a spin torque nano-oscillator (STNO) under a radio-frequency (rf) driving signal is qualitatively different from the dynamics described by the Adler model. If the external rf current $I_{rf}$ is larger than a certain critical value $I_{cr}$ (determined by the STNO bias current and damping) strong oscillations of the STNO power and phase develop in the transient regime. The frequency of these oscillations increases with $I_{rf}$ as $\propto\sqrt{I_{rf} - I_{cr}}$ and can reach several GHz, whereas the damping rate of the oscillations is almost independent of $I_{rf}$. This oscillatory transient dynamics is caused by the strong STNO nonlinearity and should be taken into account in most STNO rf applications.

Resonant Nonlinear Damping of Quantized Spin Waves in Ferromagnetic Nanowires

We use spin torque ferromagnetic resonance to measure the spectral properties of dipole-exchange spin waves in permalloy nanowires. Our measurements reveal that geometric confinement has a profound effect on the damping of spin waves in the nanowire geometry. The damping parameter of the lowest-energy quantized spin wave mode depends on applied magnetic field in a resonant way and exhibits a maximum at a field that increases with decreasing nanowire width. This enhancement of damping originates from a nonlinear resonant three-magnon confluence process allowed at a particular bias field value determined by quantization of the spin wave spectrum in the nanowire geometry.

Ferromagnetic resonance force spectroscopy of individual sub-micron size samples

We review how a magnetic resonance force microscope (MRFM) can be applied to perform ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy of \emph{individual} sub-micron size samples. We restrict our attention to a thorough study of the spin-wave eigen-modes excited in permalloy (Py) disks patterned out of the same 43.3 nm thin film. The disks have a diameter of either 1.0 or $0.5 μ$m and are quasi-saturated by a perpendicularly applied magnetic field. It is shown that \emph{quantitative} spectroscopic information can be extracted from the MRFM measurements. In particular, the data are extensively compared with complementary approximate models of the dynamical susceptibility: i) a 2D analytical model, which assumes an homogeneous magnetization dynamics along the thickness and ii) a full 3D micromagnetic simulation, which assumes an homogeneous magnetization dynamics below a characteristic length scale $c$ and which approximates the cylindrical sample volume by a discretized representation with regular cubic mesh of lateral size $c=3.9$ nm. In our analysis, the distortions due to a breaking of the axial symmetry are taken into account, both models incorporating the possibility of a small misalignment between the applied field and the normal of the disks.

Microwave power generated by a spin-torque oscillator in the presence of noise

An expression for the microwave power generated by a spin-torque oscillator in the presence of thermal noise is derived. This expression, when used in a subcritical regime, demonstrates that generated power is determined by the noise level and provides a simple way to experimentally determine the threshold current for microwave generation. The same expression gives a good quantitative description of the experimentally measured dependence of the generated power on the bias current in a moderate super-critical range of bias current variation.

Spectroscopy of the parametric magnons excited by 4-wave process

Using a Magnetic Resonace Force Microscope, we have performed ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy on parametric magnons created by 4-wave process. This is achieved by measuring the differential response to a small source modulation superimposed to a constant excitation power that drives the dynamics in the saturation regime of the transverse component. By sweeping the applied field, we observe abrupt readjustement of the total number of magnons each time the excitation coincides with a parametric mode. This gives rise to ultra-narrow peaks whose linewith is lower than $5~10^{-6}$ of the applied field.
