A shallow layer laboratory model of large-scale atmospheric circulation

A new shallow layer laboratory model of global atmosphere circulation is realized. The shallow rotating cylindrical layer of fluid with the localized heater at the bottom periphery and localized cooler in the central part of the upper boundary is considered. The rim heater imitates the equator heating and disc cooler -- the north pole cooling. The rim heater is intentionally shifted from the sidewall to decrease the influence of the no-slip vertical boundaries and provide anticyclonic-cyclonic motion in the upper layer, imitating the formation of large-scale zonal flows (easterlies and westerlies) in the low latitudes. The low-viscous silicon oil is used instead of water to avoid complex effects provided by the formation of a thin film of a surface-active substance on the open surface. The flow transforms from the Hadley-like regime to the baroclinic wave regime through transitional states. The decrease in the thermal Rossby number for the fixed value of Taylor number results in the regularization of the baroclinic waves. The main difference between presented and classical annulus configurations is the absence of the steady waves. All wave regimes, even with regular wave structures, are characterized by strong non-periodic fluctuations. The observed baroclinic wave structures are a combination of temporarily evolving different baroclinic modes. The presented model provides the formation of atmospheric-like flows, characterized by complex temporal behaviour and can serve as an efficient tool for studying different aspects of global atmospheric circulation.

Physical mechanism of the convective heat flux increasing in case of mixed boundary conditions

A series of numerical simulations of Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection in a cubic cavity are conducted in order to examine the structure of the thermal boundary layer in case of mixed boundary conditions. The main goal of the study is the physical mechanism which provides increasing of heat flux with spatial frequency of conducting-adiabatic pattern. Different spatial configuration of conducting plates, including the fractal one, are considered for Rayleigh numbers from $\Ray=10^{7}$ to $\Ray=2.0\times 10^{9}$. We have shown that the temperature boundary layer in case of mixed boundary conditions at the bottom is strongly non-uniform. This non-homogeneity is a result of several factors such as conducting-adiabatic pattern, large-scale circulation and small-scale motions over conducting plates. The thickness of the thermal boundary layer strongly depends on the size of the conducting plates and can be substantially smaller than for a classical Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection. This effect increases the heat flux with decreasing the size of hot plates, which corresponds to the increasing of spatial frequency of conducting-adiabatic pattern.

Dependence of boundary layer thickness on layer height in laminar and transient convective regimes

Dependence of boundary layer thickness on layer height in laminar and transient regimes is studied for convection from localised heat source with an open surface. The measurements of Nusselt number and characteristic frequency of thermal plume formation are done for a wide range of Rayleigh number, different Prandtl numbers and different aspect ratios. The obtained results prove that for the developed (but not turbulent) convective flow the boundary layer thickness is almost independent of the layer height and it is mainly defined by applied temperature difference and physical properties of the fluid.

Transient flows and reorientations of large-scale convection in a cubic cell

The transient processes of a turbulent large-scale convective circulation (LSC) in a cubic cell are investigated using large-eddy simulations for Rayleigh number $\Ray=10^8$ and Prandtl number $\Pran=0.7$. For the first time, we have explicitly shown that LSC is accompanied by large-scale azimuthal flows with non-zero total angular momentum. It is also shown that solid-body rotation of the entire fluid is not realized. It is found that correlation between rotation of LSC plane and the mean azimuthal motion is high during quasiperiodic oscillations of LSC near the diagonal plane and relatively weak during LSC reorientations. We propose a new plausible scenario for the reorientations of the LSC in a cube that does not involve a mean azimuthal flow. Instead of a single-roll, we introduce the superposition of a pair of large-scale orthogonal quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) rolls and the reorientation of the LSC occurs as a result of the cessation of one of the Q2D rolls. This scenario is consistent with all known experimental and numerical data.
